And so, this is the end of psychiatry, 4 down, 2 to go.

You meet a whole new variety of ppl here... n most of their life stories r well, so different from those we r familiar with. Most patients r from the lower social class... coz being poor drives u insane and being insane also makes u poor.

You get ALOT of black humor. It's hard not to laugh.
One man wanted to kill himself by jumping off the 23rd floor... from his bathroom. Unfortunately he got stuck in the bathroom window coz he was too FAT and that was how his wife found him.
Another also wanted to kill himself by jumping thru his home window... yet while he was wrestling with the window bars his neighbours found him too disturbing and decided to call the police and he got ARRESTED.
Then there was this lady who wanted to drown herself by jumping into the sea at 3am so nobody would be there to save her. She subsequently found the water TOO COLD for her liking and swam back to shore herself.
Reminds me of this guy i knew... who was really smart back in college but struck bad luck n was unemployed for years... He finally had a great offer in world trade center. He worked there for barely a week and WHAM the whole building collapsed rite in front of his eyes in 9/11. He subsequently tried to kill himself too... n i was never there for him...

Can you imagine being tickled so hard... that u cant stop laughing, n yet deep down ur crying so hard u could just break down? Well, multiply that by about 10000 times n u get life's black humor.

Yes, it makes me laugh. But no, I don't like it.

On a lighter note...

I was having sushi with benji the other day, n i was having tuna. He told me that tuna had a very high level of mercury, actually only swordfish and sharks have a higher level. This immediately aroused my interest: Swordfish? You mean its higher up on the food chain than sharks? How? He said it was probably due to the "sword"? They prolly used to to attack other fish.

Then I was like, "What if a poor swordfish stuck its sword inside a shark n can't draw it back out? It'll be quite funny, swimming with its meal before it for the rest of its life, but not being able to eat it. Kinda like the mule n carrot thing." He paused n said, "mmm... if u were a swordfish i reckon that just might happen." "............."

I think so too. It's so funny. And all the other swordfish will laugh to death, and I'll make it into history once again.

IPOD Resuscitation

Yesterday my ipod suffered from a stroke... It first presented with slurring of speech. (weird music) Condition deteriorated into loss of consciousness. (no response to touch screen) GCS was definitely lower than 8, even the pupillary reflexes were lost. (not even to the hold button!)

I performed immediately ipod CPR. I dun get much oppurtunity to actually TEACH ppl when it comes to electronics, so am definitely making use of this situation.

Proudly introducing the ipod 5Rs!

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/

CPR:
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

So after 10s, the apple logo showed up & i was glowing with pride. Sadly only 2s later, this showed up:

awww its sick!!! AFib developed. Calls for immediate defibrillation.

Ipod Defib:

1.  Connect ipod to power source via USB.

2.  If iPod doesnt show up on ITunes, set Ipod to disk mode.

3. Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you    should verify that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before continuing or connect it to power. You can connect it to the iPod Power Adapter which needs to be connected to an electrical outlet or a 6-pin Firewire port on your computer.

4. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

5. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, then release them. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost.

6. Restore your iPod using the latest IPod updater.

But that didn't work either. Poor thing had to go to ICU.

At the Apple's office. This is the diagnosis sheet:

  • Repair item (Patient's name): Ipod mini 2Gen 4GB pink
  • Serial No. (other particulars): XXXXXXXXXX
  • Warranty (PMH): Under Warranty
  • Symptoms: SAD FACE
  • Remark: New iPod under warranty

I nearly laughed to death when i read the symptoms. (Almost as hard when i read "Male" under the gender column on my own CXR! Man that HAS to be overpenetration...)

I dunno if I should be happy or sad about the treatment. But I do wish things could be as simple with people.

Neways, pix from the summer!!!!

Cebu

Miss Cebu soooo dearly. These r just random shots showing the color of the sea.

And for some reason i find this pic particularly inspiring :)

This is §»§ø, one of the few well-preserved ancient villages left. You feel so at peace with mother nature here. A slight drawback is women still have to do their laundry at the riverside.

btw, this is also where they filmed ª×ªêÂÃÀs

The first day was terrible. It was raining hard and we were shrouded by fog so thick that things more than 5 steps away cannot be seen.

Luckily the mist miraculously cleared itself up on the 2nd day. We climbed out of bed at 4 in the morning, unaware that we were in for a treat -

The sea of clouds can only be seen on a clear sunny day after heavy rain. The sunrise on top of the sea of clouds cast a saint-like golden glow on everything, and gave the clouds a pretty golden-lining.

So i guess rainy days aren't so bad after all!

³s²z¾ð - a pretty name for a tree whose trunk split into two. The pessimistic way of looking at it: dividing ways or ¥»¬O¦P®Ú¥Í. Is your cup half full or half empty.

The rock on the right: a fish carrying a turtle on top - ¿W¦û÷´ÀY

Sleeping Buddha - all these stones aren't artificial! They just naturally look this way!

One of my favs: ¸¨Ó¥Û

It was pretty high up, but definitely worth the hike.

Amongst the soft, fluffy cottoncandy clouds.

The paths are steep and narrow, so everybody walks in single file.

The scariest part: on ur RHS is the mountain, on ur LHS is a thousand-meter deep canyon. The handrails barely come up to your knees.

And your fellow Chinese ppl never fail to amaze you. Those Chinese women come hiking wearing high-heels!!

Everything was wonderful. One bone to pick is that the

catering is terrible.

P.S. haha~ someone said he wanted to see bikini pics! Too bad im too conservative for that. But i can show u a pic with only my undies on!

My heart isn't here with me... it flew off to cebu already to the blue skies n crystal clear seas... i really desperately need to go to collect it n reunite with it. but i guess the faculty wun like this idea so i better wait till friday.... but darn, its grown worse at first i only see the perfect beaches when i close my eyes but now i can see it when im staring at my notes too...... SO uncooperative!!  ahaha~ is that wut u call "ahead of ur time?"

i like cardi... its just this little pump n everything makes sense. if the left ventricle fails, it gets bigger n fluid collects in the lungs. if the right ventricle fails, it also gets bigger n fluid collects in the feet first. all the valves ever do is regurgitate n stenose. there. simple.

premature ectopic beat is when the mouth is much faster than the brain (SA node) n babbles things without thinking thru first. this is wut i always do. escape beat is when there's dead air, ur mind is blank, n so u find urself talking nonsense (fai up), which many ppl do.

n after all those years of strugging with physics, the only time i ever get to use it in med school is: when the theres AIR in the lungs n u  percuss it, its resonant. when its become SOLID or filled with FLUID n u percuss it, its dull. it's ridiculous.

so m08 ppl!! no matter how freaked out u r, remember yrs later when uve all become doctors u'll look back n feel ridiculous too. i hope this makes u feel better hehe.

SUPERPASS everyone~~!!!

P.S. ªü¥¿take care la. have a safe flight n have fun with xxx. : P

¸a¸a take care too. stay strong n smile. ¤p§O³Ó·s±B§r, tho i know one year is pretty long. im here (tho im always busy, im only a call away)
