freeeeeeeeeeeedom!

been meaning to write a little on a recent weekend conference i was at, but couldn't come up with the right words. two local churches (Bethel Grove Bible Church and New Life Presbyterian Church) and a local christian studies center (Chesterton House) host a weekend conference every year called Institute of Biblical Studies. past topics and notable speakers have included "Christ and Culture," "Communicating Grace and Pursuing Justice," and D.A. Carson. This year's speaker was Dr. Rev. Stephen Um from Citylife church in Boston, he had a series of 5 talks over 3 days on the theme of "Gospel Freedom: Ancient Words, Modern Wisdom." click for audio

the theme of his talks was the freedom we have that comes from being under a grace-based system rather than a merit-based system. the beauty of the Christian gospel message is that we cannot earn our worth. our worth is defined by the blood of Christ, the blood that covers our sin and makes us clean again such that we can once again be in the presence of God, as we were created to be. and because there is nothing we can do to earn our worth, we are free to live, free to fail, free because we have no obligation to fill. the world we live in tells us that we have to maintain image, that we can't "let people down," that we need to "matter." quite the contrary! our identity is found in Jesus, we matter because he made us matter, not because of anything we ever did. but what then governs our actions? we are free to do whatever, but the appropriate response to this gift is obedience to the gifter, that is God. Dr. Um is much more eloquent than i.

good movie, though not recommended right before bedtime.

airplanes are good, sometimes

airplanes are good times to read and think, because the chair spacing is too small to work on the laptop, and the chair ergonomics too uncomfortable to sleep. though i always manage to sleep a little anyways. on the LAX-philly leg i got an exit row seat. it was awesome! i thought i'd be courteous and not lean my seat back, since i had about 3 ft extra of legroom, it was the least i could do to give my back-neighbor 4 extra inches. but exit row seats: highly recommended! at least us airways doesn't charge you extra to get one.

i read a book on the way there, and started another on the way back
Jesus Among Other Gods by Ravi Zacharias
Confessions by Saint Augustine of Hippo

books and tv

i've been watching c-span lately, for campaign coverage. there was a clip of obama's speech at a church in atlanta. i don't know what i'd think about a presidential candidate pitching his platform at my church. non-commercial tv is great. i watched a documentary about young pianists on pbs, coldplay on austin city limits (only caught the very end), a seminar on breast cancer from the local hospital, and of course, my favorite: commons question time.

some pictures from my crazy 4-stop christmas break (click for more)
