  • I should post here more often, shouldn't I?

I'm FINISHED with all 6 of my finals! It's officially summer!

...Although I had a scare today. I woke up early to study for my dance final, and made the mistake of studying on my bed. I fell asleep...and woke up 5 minutes after the final had started. Thankfully, I live on campus, so I threw on shoes and a sweatshirt (easier than changing out of the large t-shirt I was wearing as a night shirt), pulled my messy hair up into a ponytail, then ran to take the test. I got there 10 minutes late, but it was all good. And then I was out of there in 20 more minutes, finished with my last final!

I also just discovered I got an A in my Combinatorics and Algebra class, which was REALLY exciting. That class was hard!

So now I have just over 48 hours to pack and clean and just do whatever I want.  Then I pick up my dad from the airport and we start driving home!

ETA: Woah, I'm halfway done with college. How'd that happen so quickly???

  • Wisdom Teeth Update

So, I no longer have wisdom teeth, just indentations in my gums where they used to be.

The wisdom teeth extraction wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be, though of course, it still wasn't fun.  While they didn't put me to sleep while they were doing the extraction, they gave me the option of using nitrous oxide (laughing gas).  I took them up on it, since I don't even like regular dentist visits. So for most of the extraction, I was pretty much out of it, which was nice. There was one part where I didn't have the gas, and even that little taste of what it would have been like if they hadn't used it at all made me glad I'd had the gas for the rest of it.

They took out all four teeth, and put a bone graft in three of the four teeth.  They didn't put a bone graft in the last tooth, because they had to leave a small bit of the tooth in. Sometimes, when that happens, and the body will push the bit of tooth out, so they didn't want graft blocking that from happening.  They also stitched up the gums on the bottom two sides.

Afterwards, I was bleeding a lot, and my entire mouth was numb. They prescribed Vicodin and Amoxicillin, to get rid of the pain and to prevent an infection. With the Vicodin (and later Ibuprofin), I really didn't experience any pain at all. A bit of achiness/soreness, especially when I moved my mouth, but that was about it. I didn't even have much swelling, though I did have some.  I pretty much just lounged around the house for the next two days, reading and surfing the internet and sleeping.  I didn't eat much at all the first day (just a bit of soup), but starting the next day I was hungry again and gradually moved my way up to foods like pasta and sandwiches.

The stitches were supposed to be taken out a week after the extractions.  The problem was, I flew back to Texas on Saturday morning, only 4 days after I'd gotten my wisdom teeth out. On my mom's advice, I went in on Friday to see if they would take out the stitches then, just so I wouldn't have to worry about finding someone else to do it.  They said it was really too early, and they recommended waiting until the next Wednesday or Thursday.  Taking out stitches isn't hard, they told me, so perhaps even my school's health center could do it.  So anyway, on Monday, I called the health center at my school.  They said they didn't do it, so I asked them if they could recommend me a dentist who could. They gave me three names and phone numbers. The first one I called said they wouldn't do it because of liability issues (if it turned out the wisdom teeth extraction hadn't gone well, they could be blamed). The second said they would do it, and so I made an appointment. I went in Wednesday, missing a class because they didn't have any more afternoon appointments.  Taking out the stitches hurt just a tad, since my gums were a bit sore still, but it was a pretty quick and painless process (in fact, filling out the paperwork took more time than anything else). And they didn't charge me for the visit, which was a nice surprise. (They couldn't give me an exact price before hand, because they wouldn't know how much it would cost me until the dentist took a look to see if there were any problems. They did tell me it wouldn't cost much, but I didn't expect that it would be free).

Well, that's my pretty boring wisdom teeth story. I'm glad it's not exciting, though, because if it were, it probably would have meant more pain for me.   Anyway, I'll probably update soon on what I've been doing this past week, since school has just started up again.

  • Ugh...

Wisdom teeth are getting taken out tomorrow.  They've all erupted, and they're not that bad, so I'm only getting local anesthetic.  I haven't had teeth pulled in a LONG time, though, and I hate dentist visits in general, so this should be interesting. I'm trying not to think about it...

  • A Belated Merry Christmas to You!

Wow, I've really been neglecting this lately...

Anyway, I've definitely been enjoying my Christmas break, which is about half over already.  I went to San Francisco with my friends Amanda and Jennifer (just one of my high school friends with the same name as me. Surprisingly, I don't know many people at my college with that name) for a week, and had a blast. The trip wasn't cheap, but hey, after finals, I was ready to splurge! Also, we did find cheap plane tickets, so we didn't have to spend time and money with driving and parking.  We didn't even have to rent a car or anything, since public transportation is so easy and didn't cost all that much, especially since we bought a weekly pass for the muni.  And the hotel was right on Fisherman's Wharf, too, so we were able to walk to Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, etc.

While there, we did some shopping, or at least window-shopping.  We did buy a few souvenirs and quite a bit of chocolate, though, and Amanda and I bought Jessica McClintock dresses. The dress was definitely a splurge for me, as I have no clue what I'm going to wear it to. But it fits nicely, only cost $65 (instead of $170), and is really different from any of the other dresses I own. I'm sure I'll find some excuse to wear it!

We also got to see the SF Ballet perform the Nutcracker. It was amazing, though I was kind of tired and had a harder time paying attention.  I've seen other productions of the Nutcracker, as I usher at a local theater, but none were nearly this good. They had a different interpretation of some scenes than I've seen before, too, so it was interesting to compare different productions.  Also, the little kids attending the show were adorable! Surprisingly, there were a ton of them there (all dressed up in their best clothes), and it wasn't even one of their "family nights". It was a matinee, though, and I'm guessing parents would rather bring their little kids to an afternoon show than an evening one.   Anyway, I heard one parent ask her little boy (maybe 5 years old) whether he liked the show. He said he did, but it was "kind of girly", which I thought was pretty funny. Another boy (a bit older), however, was dancing around after the show. Hooray for getting more boys to dance!

Oh, and of course, the main thing we did in San Francisco was eat!  (Yes, I like food probably a bit too much...) We didn't have a whole lot we couldn't have gotten anywhere else, but it was all really good!  The first night we ate at Bubba Gump's, overlooking the Bay.  The next day, I introduced Amanda and Jennifer to dim sum, at a random little place we found in Chinatown.   We ordered up at the counter rather than off of carts rolled around the room, but it was yummy and cheap.  I'll still have to take them to a place closer to home that has the carts and more of a selection sometime, though. We also ate at Rain Forest Cafe, which I hadn't been to in years, and had Boudin's famous clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Our most unhealthy dinner was crepes, which we got from a place off Pier 39. I got one with cream cheese and raspberry jam. It was REALLY sweet! I loved it, but by the end I don't think I could have taken any more sugar. I don't remember all what else we ate, but we were rarely hungry!

We got back from San Francisco on the 21st. Last weekend, I spent a lot of time with my immediate family, as well as with my dad's side of the family. We see two of his sisters a lot, but it was great to see the family we don't see so much.  My two little cousins on that side are so cute!  Christmas day, we drove up to Fresno to see my mom's side of the family.

That afternoon, we went to a Alzheimer's nursing home to give a little Christmas show for the residents, which has been our tradition for the last few years. My sisters sang a nice duet, my four youngest cousins on that side played piano (they're really good), and my other set of cousins tried to do a couple of sax trios, but only ended up doing one because they were having problems with one of the saxes.  My brother and I were the ones who didn't really have a talent to show off. In previous years, I'd played my flute, and maybe sang, but I haven't touched my flute in months and I really don't sing all that well.  By the time we got in the car on the way to the nursing home, we decided we were going to sing something simple in unison (my sister said it was lame, but we just wanted to do whatever would be easiest), but we still had no clue what we were going to sing. During the car ride, our sisters ended up daring us to sing the 12 Days of Christmas complete with ridiculous hand motions.  So we did it. And I ended up forgetting some of the words, and laughing too hard in places to sing at all.  So yeah, we pretty much made a fool of ourselves. But at least we got two dollars each out of it! My cousins (the sax players) said they wouldn't have done it for only $2 each, but I told them I would have made a fool of myself no matter what I did, so at least this way we didn't look like we were trying not to. And hey, my grandma at least loved the act! It took awhile to convince her that we had made the entire thing up in only like 10 minutes.

Let's see, what else did we do in Fresno?  All the Christmas-y stuff, of course.  And we watched quite a few movies. Most were DVD's, but we did go to the theater to see Juno with some movie tickets we had (well, most of us did. My brother and my dad saw National Treasure 2). It's a really funny and cute movie, though I thought the dialogue was a bit over the top in places. Oh, and my brother got Guitar Hero for Christmas, so we've played that a lot the last few days.  I'd never played before, and it's actually quite a bit of fun! I'm not too good, and I get bored of it after awhile, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.  We also went bowling. Now, I'm really bad at bowling, though I like doing it. Last time I played, I got 9 gutter balls in a row. So my first game this time was really good for me! I got a score of 76 (don't laugh) . But the second game, I got 36. Ouch...

So yeah, I had a great Christmas. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

  • In which Jennifer attempts an English accent, and fails miserably...

Alright, over at LiveJournal, someone had a project going where everyone would record themselves reciting "Errantry", by J.R.R. Tolkien, which is a horrible tongue-twister of a poem, but also quite fun to say. So I joined in, and thought I'd post my results here as well. By the way, I didn't look up the pronunciation on any of the words (though I did listen to Tolkien's recording of the poem), so I very well may have unknowingly mispronounced some words.

Here is my first take. I was trying to read it as fast as possible, and well, let's just say it just didn't work out all that well...

Eight takes later, I got this.  I read the whole thing in less than a minute and a half (if you don't count the intro/title). Woohoo!

Then I tried reading it slower, at a more normal speed, in order to make it sound a little bit more like a poem and less like a train without brakes.   On my third try, this was the result. Still not perfect, but it'll do!

Finally, I added the very embarrassing version in an English accent mentioned in the title of this post. Yes, go ahead and laugh...

Feel free to listen...or not, if you think I'm a total dork for doing this!  Oh, and the list of all the submissions is here, if anyone would like to listen to other people's versions of the poem.
