We are in the middle of the heart breaking process of saying good-bye to our beloved Siberian Husky, Beowulfe, known affectionately as "Wulfe" and I am finding myself trying to make every day he has left nearly perfect for him. As I picked him up from his home away from home this afternoon, I wondered if this would be his last ride before he goes to the Vets and decided that he deserved a few more memorable moments... so this is the list of things I made for Wulfe to accomplish in the days ahead: - A ride to the mountaintop to stick his nose in the snow one last time and to walk an easy path with new smells.
- A trip through the drive-through at McDonalds where he gets his own box of chicken nuggets and doesn't have to share one with me.
- A walk around the block without me pushing him to quit sniffing and to pick up the pace.
- A very short game of toss in the backyard if the pain pills kick in enough to let him run across the grass one last time.
- I'll cook something in the oven all afternoon and have dinner in the kitchen and will feed him bites from the table so he doesn't have to wait impatiently for the last bite.
- One last delivered pizza that doesn't have nasty tasting pills buried under the cheese.
- When he asks me to take a dog break, I'll do it gladly because there aren't many more chances to do that and he asks so rarely anymore.
- When he eats the cat food, I'll laugh and not throw him outside because it can't hurt him anymore than he's already hurting.
- He doesn't remember what a bad dog is anymore and I won't use that phrase ever again with him.
- When the time comes to let go, I'll hug him gently so it doesn't hurt and tell him "Good Dog" before I let him go play with Dr. Dana one last time.
"Good Dog, Wulfe. Good Dog!"
Wulfe You have made our life rich in so many ways An abused runaway, stubborn and fierce, You found your own home And left your mark on the carpets, the window screens, the back seat and on our hearts I hope you were happy living with us for the past twelve years... It seems like yesterday that you waltzed into Jenn's yard, skin and bones, a big grin on your face, oblivious to the ticks and burrs on your fur, "Hi," You said when I saw you for the first time... "Got anything to eat in your pocket?" You will be missed terribly by all who love you when the day comes to say good-bye... |
