| Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.
-Proverbs 16:3
Wow, commitments!! It seems that so many things in our lives demand them. Sometimes we have so many commitments that we nearly drown in them. A commitment is work. If I have made my commitment to the golf team (this is just an example...), it means that I am going to put a large chunk of my energy and time into practicing my swing, going to the driving range, and showing up at tournaments. The golf team can depend on me.
Of course, I don’t just play golf all the time either. I mean, I also must be committed to my schoolwork, as every teacher so sternly emphasizes on the first day of class. If I make that commitment, I’m saying that if I get behind in Geometry, then my little heart is going to race through textbook pages all night long if needed until I can get caught up-- haha, how often do we actually do that?
And then we have commitments to people: “We should hang out sometime.”—That is already a dilute form of a commitment. “You never call me anymore”—That’s demanding a commitment. And so, with all these things piling up we can feel as though our lives are merely someone else’s agenda book and that we are just a machine.
We don’t have anything left to committ to God, do we? It looks like He thinks differently. He says to committ to Him whatever we do. Whatever we do? That’s kind of a lot, isn’t it, God? I mean, I don’t know that You’ll be able to handle the responsibilities of my job or my schoolwork or all my practices... I just can’t committ everything to You, because my life will be out of control. And I need control because, frankly, I’ve got to save up for a new car, not to mention for college, and if I can committ myself enough to basketball, I’ll get a scholarship. If I don’t focus on my studies, then my ACT score will never be good enough to get into a good college, and if I don’t get a degree from a good college, then how will I get a job that pays anything? And then how will I ever be able to buy a house?
But this is where God says, “Stop talking!” He says that our plans will succeed if we committ whatever we do to Him. He doesn’t say they might. He says they will. It’s certain. Is anything else in life really certain? He’s saying, “Wow, you're driving yourself nuts trying to do this all by yourself. Don’t worry about anything anymore. Come work for me, and everything will turn out alright.” Do you believe this? Do you believe that the God who created the Earth and the Heavens can make your life turn out? If you do, then why committ yourself to anything else? Why do you worry about taking care of yourself and your life? Whatever you do, do it for God, and you’ll find that when your life is committed only to Him, He’ll take care of you. |
