How I got myself into thishehe I better start writing before this crazy feeling passes. It's been a crazy few days and it's only right that I write it all down. buni has her own version but here's my attempt to completely twist the truth. Getting the ring We've ordered the rock and setting from a jeweler in diamond district more than a month ago (ask us if you want a good deal!). Picked out the separate pieces and the design. We were set for me to pick up from there. Jen wouldn't know when I'd receive the ring and certainly not till I propose.
(Credit to slieberry for taking such a beautiful picture of the ring!) I didn't realize until 2-3 weeks later that this ring was going to take 4-6 weeks. The setting was platinum and the design was extremely customized. And it was made from scratch, shipped overseas. I was gonna have to wait... for a long time. Keeping Jen patient wasn't always the easiest thing, but I'd have to say she was very good at it. However we did have an exchange like this the week before: Jen: Why haven't you proposed yet? Me: You really want me to answer that? There's a good reason!! Jen: What good reason can there be?!?!! Turned out she found two black boxes in my room. It was actually two boxes that reassembled a ring box that I kept semi-hidden on my bookcase. I actually brought it to South America two months ago (no ring yet), and thought I could SOMEHOW make use of it if the perfect romantic were to ever come up for me to propose. I had to keep them hidden the WHOLE 10 day trip from Jen without airport security taking it out while searching for toothpaste. Again, turned out she found it ... in my room.
After a few weeks, I was getting equally uneasy about how long this is taking. Sneaking out every other day to harass our jeweler. Even I was losing patience, so I was determined to propose soon after I got the ring since I would've expected to be proposed to too if I were Jen. The Plan and Execution After knowing that the ring is almost ready (5 weeks after the order), I could finally plan this thing. This is how it went (from my perspective): I want to do it in front of St. Bart's Church, you may know the significance of this church as where Jen and I FOUND each other after losing touch of each other at the black out in 2003.
(credit to St. Bart's website, I know I stole from a church's website) If you know this church or the Park Ave area, you'll think... how to get someone to be in Park Avenue on a weekend?! Who goes there? So it requires the following: - A reason to go there: I need to stop by the office (I even told her this late at night so she wouldn't suspect) - A reason for her to be around the area with me: have lunch around Midtown East area - A reason for us to eat lunch around the area: catch up with some friends after church - friends to catch up after church (Shawn, Ella, and Johnson - the accomplice) - friends to run into at church - friends to need to go towards the Grand Central Terminal after lunch I can go forever, but basically I crafted an entire scenario just so we'd walk in front of the church after lunch (I even took us on a detour north so we don't end up missing the church). Done. We're walking and walking. I was so nervous that I almost had to stop walking b/c my heart was about to jump out and run off. We approached St. Bart's and I suggested, "Hey guys, you know about this church and how it was special?". Jen then eagerly volunteered the story, prompting me to say "Jen, let's take a picture!" She probably found this strange already. I didn't care - I was going to propose, you have to blow the cover at some point. Taking a picture allowed us to stand by ourselves. So I gave Shawn my camera and told Jen to sit. "This is what I like to call a circle of trust. There's a little piece of rock on top, so it's not really a circle anymore but we'll have to make do. My hand is trembling so much I need my left hand to keep my right hand from dropping 3 months of my salary."
"Oh thank God it fits. You must be the one!"
Thanks Shawn, Ella, and Johnson! You guys made it a ton of fun for us. :) Then I told Jen, "We should head downtown to Max Brenner - I've invited two of your roommates and my sister to celebrate with us." (Side story - Jen and I went there two days ago, "Can we go now?" "Sure... oh look we have a table already" "It's okay. We probably won't be back for a looooong time" "That's true... mmm..") When we arrived the following took place: I've invited a LOT more people (Sorry for those I couldn't get in touch with... I really did this LAAASST MINUTE).
(not pictured Columbian - nombrez. Your early exit was noted. haha j/k. Thanks for coming guys)
The three roommates that helped so much putting together the party. They also get a ton of credit for just helping me bounce ideas for proposing. This made it so much easier for me. You have no idea.
(Almost) everyone! For such a quick planning - this went pretty darn smoothly. The beautiful weather. The relatively unsuspicious Jen. :)
New addition to our family.
Have a nice life. hehe (You've got to appreciate the contrast in our blogs. I just did the reporting and Jen was all "yayyy!". Beautiful ) |
