B & B

On the subject of Buttes, I snapped a picture this evening of Skinner Butte as viewed from the West, just one street over from my house (there are too many street trees on my street to get a good view):

Those are bike lanes on either side of the car lanes. And here's a great circa 1910 photo of the butte viewed from the South:

Here is the old building whose porch has the bench on which I've been enjoying my late afternoon sits:

The building is just a block from the train station--the tracks run along the south side of the Butte. My bench is between the first and second columns. The building to the left is the one at which I make my copies of my old Tillamook views. And here's the view from the bench:

Fridays and Saturdays are a little more active than a cool Wednesday afternoon at this intersection. The building to the right is the downtown branch of the post office, built in the 1930s. It's just a side view--the front is a little more impressive looking. And visible in the background just to the left of the P.O. is the Hilton Hotel. Fifth street is also on a bike route and has bike lanes between the car lanes and the parking spaces.

I decided to take three days off this week just because I could. I'll have Thursday, Saturday and Sunday off--and all three days are supposed to be sunny. Tomorrow's activities will include a trip to the dump and hopefully a renewed effort in my gutted big bathroom. The whole kitchen window thing was a pleasant diversion, but it is time to get serious about my bathroom again.

Great pictures! In Chicago we have bike lanes and bus lanes. And now da mayor is talking about more bus lanes and giving the busses sensors to keep lights greener longer so they can zip around the city, all in an effort to reduce traffic. I think we should just make cars cost $100,000 and gas $25/gal. That'll get some of these tools who drive in from the suburbs every day to think twice.

I have dreams about re-doing my bathroom, but the things I want to do are mainly aesthetic.

Have a wonderful day off!

The photos are nice. Dramatic skies and lighting.

Yeah, the sky was really cool last night. The clouds were thinning and moving quick as the sun was going down and it was doing interesting things with the light. I even got sprinkled on a few times. This morning there are just a few high, hazy clouds left.

I think that's called the 'Golden Hour' in Hollywood, when everything looks so good on film. Really remarkable photos.

I like those late day golden sunshines too. I think they are much more beautiful in urban areas than in the countryside, because of the rich overtones and effects they have on buildings.

The lone double line segment in the top pic would confuse me if I'd pass by there.

Around here (I mean Eastern Canada), when there is a railroad track, the haves always live on the north side of them, and the havenots on the south side. Just as rich districs are always in the western part of cities, and the poor ones in the eastern part. I don't know why it is, but it's verifiable. The way I see it, you live both north of the tracks and in western Eugene. So you would happen to live with the hot shots, in my book.

Is that your lucky star hanging from the sky (or maybe the porch roof)?

Yeah, that part of the street is a bit confusing--it is right where it transitions from no-center-turning-lane to center-turning-lane, and that is where I usually turn to get home (heading the same direction as the photo) and when I'm waiting (in my car) for oncoming traffic to clear to turn left, I'm not quite up to where there is enough turning lane so that cars behind me can get by comfortably. If you are curious and bored, you can google-map "888 West 1st Avenue" to see that intersection--that is the address of Joe's Garage, that building to the right in the photo. And if you are really curious and really bored, you can check out 15 Ash Street. In my immediate neighborhood, I do think things are a bit nicer to the north of the tracks, but in Eugene in general, the nice areas are to the east and the south--mostly because that's where the hills are. The same was true where I grew up in Oakland--the nicest areas where up in the hills to the east and the poor neighborhoods were to the west close to the bay (SF Bay) where the industrial areas (and railroad tracks) were.

Curious people are seldom bored!

I had figured the garage was about there but I couldn't and still can't figure the 105. It does seem like an overpass on Google (or West 1st passing under it if you will) but on the pic, it seems not to be there. I understand now the lone double lines. Makes sense viewed from the top. It must be a tricky turn since Adams St is slanted to the left.
I sent an email about some other preoccupation of mine.

I can see the overpass now, on the larger version of pic number one. It looks far away on the pic but on Google, it seems much closer. Optical points of views can be quite treacherous.
