Random updates...

1. Conference - Manned a booth alone on the final day of a conference in Dallas.  In a way, manning a booth on the final day of a conference is kind of like sending in the scrubs with 1:20 left in the quarter when you're ahead by 20 points.  Nobody ever really sticks out a conference to the end and by mid-afternoon, the exhibit hall was pretty much a ghost-town.  You could see most of the vendors starting to abandon their booths to raid the "cool" stuff left by other vendors.  It's funny how much people will covet a mini-flashlight on these days...

2. Cowboys game - Wow.  Even though we won by 9 points, from the looks of Cowboys fans you would have thought we lost by 20.  Romo made some dumb mistakes, but made enough plays to get us the win.  Sometimes you need a little luck here and there (with Miles Austin mishandling the pass and tipping it to Patrick Crayton in the end zone).

The positives: defense showed some backbone; Marion Barber asserted himself; Felix Jones looked really good.
The negatives: Romo is going to hear this statistic alot during the week: 8 straight games w/ INT. :-/

3. State Fair - We're planning on taking the youth kids to the State Fair on Sunday.  While the outing is for the kids, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to it w/ my own agenda in mind.  Here are some of the NEW fair foods I want to sample (courtesy of TX state fair website):

Fried Banana Split – A mixture of banana and honey peanut butter is rolled in balls, battered and deep-fried and topped with assorted, delicious fixings, including powdered sugar, caramel and chocolate syrups, chopped peanuts, whipped cream and banana split flavored ice cream bites then fittingly crowned with the traditional cherry.  Served at the Auto Grill inside the Automobile Building. Winner of Most Creative in the Big Tex Choice Awards competition.

Fernie’s All-American Fried Grilled Cheese Sandwich – An American classic with a State Fair twist.  Two slices of white bread filled with a blend of American and cheddar cheeses, dipped in an egg and milk batter and lightly coated with panko bread crumbs for extra crispness. Served with a side of shoestring potato sticks, a pickle spear and tomato soup dipping sauce. The All American Meal!  Served in the Dock Restaurant inside the Embarcadero Building.  Finalist in the Big Tex Choice Awards competition.

Deep Fried S’mores – Marshmallow cream and chocolate chips are sandwiched between two graham crackers, dipped in a feather-light batter and fried to a golden brown.  The campfire-inspired treats are dusted in powdered sugar.  Included in the menu at stand N9 located near the Embarcadero entrance. Finalist in the Big Tex Choice Awards competition.

Fire & Ice – A pineapple ring is battered and deep-fried, then topped with banana-flavored whipped cream that’s been frozen in liquid nitrogen. The smoking concoction is ladled with strawberries and syrup.  Fire & Ice is served by Abel Gonzales at the family-run stand on Nimitz Drive. Finalist in the Big Tex Choice Awards competition.

This is all in addition to the usual roasted corn and funnel cake on my to-eat list!  Time to get fat!  Woohoo!!!

EDIT: OMG...almost forgot to include the almighty corny dog on the list as well!  Wow...that was a close one. haha...

Men's room etiquette...

I was just about to pee.  I was in the middle of doing my business when this Chinese guy stood over in the next stall doing HIS business...and popped the question, "So, are you Chinese?"

Weird, huh?

Yeah, it weirded me out, too.  At first, I did a double take.  Was the guy asking me???  When it was obvious he was expecting an answer...I struggled to answer, NOT because I didn't know the answer but b/c the timing of it was just all so wrong.  Couldn't he have waited just 10 seconds for me to get done before asking?  Was it a matter of state emergency for me to divulge my nationality?

But then I started to think...what would be the weirdest questions you could ask another guy when he's trying to use the restroom?

I suppose it's better than..."So, are you single?" or "Whatcha doin'?"

It's been awhile...

It seems like everyone is getting sick these days.  One of my kids that I tutor literally went through an entire roll of toilet paper during our session.  The kid seemed pretty miserable the entire time...and it wasn't b/c of my teaching!

My own allergies were at its worst on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I think I'm pretty much over it now.  I can actually breathe normally!  It was pretty bad through the week as it was a little difficult trying to stay on task w/ homework and work when you're always fighting the urge to hock up what feels like your left kidney.  Gross...

I got to meet up w/ some buddies on Thursday over wings and then again on Saturday at a bbq.  It always seems like we're getting together to go eat.  Haha...in fact, it kinda makes me laugh out loud a little when I think about this, but we actually took a bunch of "profile" shots of our bellies - a "sucked-up" version and then a "pregnant" version.

From the picture (that will never be posted online), it looks like I'm happily expecting in my first trimester.  I just can't resist good bbq, man...

Our youth pastor touched on the topic of marrige a bit today.  I guess I could write up a whole post on what he said about marriage, but instead I'm just going to leave the following question: Is the rising importance of finding your "soulmate" a contributing cause to the rising rate of divorce today?

Updates...

1. Bad luck. Everything I touch is getting broken.  My laptop won't turn on.  My car battery died.  It looks like I'm gonna have to buy FOUR new tires for the car.  It just seems like money has been flying out of my wallet lately!  My sis thinks that I'm in the middle of a pretty bad "bad-luck" rut.  I really don't think it's that bad, though.

I mean, it's not like you could make a country song out of all the bad things that have happened to me.  My dog didn't die.  My wife didn't cheat on me and then leave.  It's not like I lost my job or something.  So, on the bright side: my life isn't a country song!  Amen to that!

2. Relationship talk. Status on facebook is still single, so relax, people.  This isn't an "update" on my status.  I was wondering, though, is this the only way to announce to the world that people are "in a relationship", so to speak?  I mean, whatever happened to talking about people behind their back?  gossiping about other folk's dirty laundry??  Seriously, did you hear what happened to Sarah and John???

Well, let me tell you what I heard...

3. Even Faster and ummm...Furious-er.  Wow, Vin Diesel has more lives than...well, ya know what.  Wow, I can't believe they're actually making (and releasing) this film.  Unfortuntely, I'll probably still watch this movie like the mindless consumer that I am.  Fast cars, big explosions, typical over-the-top plots.  What about that don't you love???

4. Fantasy football talk.  Felix Jones was my first round pick for my dynasty league (I picked 7th overall).  Let's just say, I was pleasantly surprised this Sunday and I'm hoping we see more out of this kid.  And yeah, I won my game, too.  Very nice...

5. Church growth.  Talk to me if you wanna find out.  Thanks...

Creepy cartoon

I wonder what people will think about this one (DO NOT WATCH IF YOU GET CREEPED OUT EASILY) that portrays a short story by Mark Twain, "The Mysterious Stranger".  I don't think kids could watch this w/out being mentally scarred!  >_<
