Trip to Oxford on October 14We joined a trip to Oxford organized by the Postgraduate Student Association here. It is a small but warm city, the whole city is basically the university, with colleges every where. Some of the famous colleges are open for visitors though we need to pay entrance fee, the feeling is sort of strange because you are not sure whether it is a university or tourist attraction when you pay the fee to enter.
This is a street artist in Oxford, you see what he wrote on the stand? If you: Like it, 1 pound; Love it, 2 pounds; Hate it, 50 pounds. Interesting, isn't it?
Today is the Matriculation Ceremony of the university, students all wear their gown for the ceremony. Every student being admitted to the university got a gown to be worn in important ceremonies like this or even during exams, very traditional (HKU students also got a similar gown).
Looks familiar? Yes, this is where they filmed Harry Potter, the Dining Hall in Christ Church, one of the colleges in Oxford.

The Bodleian Library, the main library in Oxford University. We joined a guided tour and went into an medieval times library inside, which keeps books from hundred years before. We were not allowed to take picture inside, you know why? 1. Flash light will damage the books. (Fair enough, reasonable) 2. Harry Potter and other film-maker paid a lot of money to make their film inside the library, so the school would not allow individuals to take photo inside. (????? Even if this is the truth, it is not neccesary to tell us, right?!) The whole city is more like a tourist attraction and museum rather than a univeristy, we have no doubt that it is a prestigous school, but is it appropriate to make it so commercial? |
