February 19 - 29

Due to the fact that we are looking towards another long weekend (due to another Teachers Convention) I will update my plans as far as February 29.  There will be a few holes but the following should give an idea as to what is being planned for in each of the following subjects.

GRADE 7 SCIENCE

On Tuesday I will be collecting Topic 6 Review questions and as a class we will begin working through Topic 7 Stable Sturctures.  As we work through this topic we will be working through a few find out activities.  As we read through Topic 7, the class will also be taking notes on the materials covered.  We should work through the topic by February 27 when Topic 7 Review questions will be assigned.  On February 28 the students will be working through Topic 6-7 Wrap-Up.  Once again this assignment will be taken in for a quiz mark.  On Friday, February 29, and Monday, March 3 the class will receive time to review for a unit test.  At the moment I am planning on giving the test on March 4.  It would be a great idea for the students to begin studying for the test immediately.

GRADE 8 CLASSES AND ASSIGNMENTS

BIBLE

At the moment, the grade 8 class is continuing to work through Understanding the Bible.  This mini unit has a lot of interesting information about how we got the Bible.  Hopefully the students will be able to use it to come to a deeper appreciation of God's Word and a better understanding of how it is in fact very pertinent to our lives today.

LANGUAGE ARTS

SPELLING:   The next spelling test is tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 29.  Once again it will cover ten terms and their definitions.

GRAMMAR:  Due to some confusion on Pronouns, we have been working through some extra exercises on Pronouns.  The package that the students have been working through should be finished in class by February 20.  Once we complete Pronouns we will begin working on Adjectives.

LITERATURE -  We have begun a new unit.  This unit is actually a novel study "The Bronze Bow".  Before we actually begin to read the novel, the class will learn about the Roman and Jewish cultures during the time of Christ.  As we read through the novel, we will learn about biblical messianic prophecies, and laws concerning the Sabbath day.  We will also work through some maps on the Holy Land.  As a class we will read through chapters 1 to 3 by February 29.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We have been working through chapter 3 in our textbooks.  In this chapter, the class will learn how the Western Worldview grew out of the Renaissance.  Some of the concepts we will cover include: the Protestant Reformation, Exploration, Expansionism, and Imperialism.  Once we have completed working through chapter 3 we will begin to look at Japan and how it emerged from a period of isolation.  It should be an interesting topic.  The Renaissance should be completed by February 27th at the latest.

SCIENCE

We have begun the new unit on Light and Optical Systems.  The class received an end of unit assignment.  This assignment is worth 100 points but the students get to choose which 100 points they want to answer.  As we work through Topic 1 students will learn about various sources of light and how to calculate the cost of lightning. (Hopefully this will encourage them with the cost of your electricity usage at home.  We will also be working through a number of Find Out Activities as we read Topic 1.  By February 29 we should be completed Topic 1, and learned how to draw and label a ray diagram

That's about all for now, remember that February has 29 days in it this year.  Bible Memory is due at that time.  Have a wonderful week.     If you have any questions or want more details, please contact me at school (556-4038) or e-mail me at  bhougestol@chinooksedge.ab.ca
