| Go See: Eastern PromisesFirst movie I've seen in a long long time - since Knocked Up in July I think...
Eastern Promises is right up there with - dare I say it - the Godfather in terms of an authentic gangster film.
The reason it is NOT a pure "Godfather" classic is because of its scope, among other reasons.
The acting is amazing - the roles played by Viggo Mortensen (Aragon, LOtR) and Vincent Cassel (Toulour, Ocean's 12) are award worthy. Committed, bold and authentic. The other thing you will realize is that while the Godfather causes you to empathize with the main criminals by way of mostly their character, this movie is much clearer on why you should empathize with certain individuals, and who is truly evil.
There is no shortage of very lifelike violence and a deplorable sex scene but this movie managed to escape an NC-17 rating. It also contains one of the most gut-wrenching fight scenes you will ever witness.
It's beauty lies in its grittiness and realism. The Russian mob has never looked better. Overall, a masterpiece. 4 stars.
