Rest in Pieces

You may not remember them, but my darling first socks (Patton's Kroy sock yarn, knit on US 5s) have decided to die.  dead first sock 2 dead first sock 1 Yes, they were loose and sloppy, but they were my first socks and I wore them anyway.  I pulled one out of the laundry basket this morning, and it was fine.  Then I pulled out the second one.  Horrors!  I'm not sure what happened to it, to be honest.  It looks like there was some serious carnage in the wash.  They were finished in probably Dec. 2004, shortly after I became a knitter, and are the reason I continued knitting socks.  They were the ONLY pair that fit when I went to the hospital to have the short person (what with having huge ankles at that point) and were welcome to chase the chill of the hospital away.  And while yes, I could have probably fixed them, I would really rather knit another pair.  Rest in pieces, first socks.

Ta-da.  You're getting an entry, but no photo.  I've recently received the new Big Girl Knits book, and naturally fell in love with a pattern.  And I wanted to make the T-shirt like sweater out of linen, figuring it would be perfect for summer.  So down to my favorite LYS I go.  She carries Euroflax, and I know she could order me some.  Ummm....$150 for a t-shirt?  Even after you're giving me a great discount?  And the bamboo runs about the same.....  Maybe your Webs book?  Their linen gets it down to about $120, but still.....  How many strands of your weaver's cotton would I have to hold together to get a sport weight?  You have cones of weaver's linen?  In sport weight?  But my color choices are black, ivory, and beige?  Let me see the black and ivory.....  And how much would this linen be for my T-shirt?  $80 including taxes?  Here's my credit card.

You'll get photos after I'm done swatching.  It's a little weird to work with, so I'm sure I'm going to have to do a full-on wash in the washer, dry in the dryer before I can measure the gauge.  So the ivory swatch will be on US 5s, and the black swatch will be US 4s, since my gauge looks off on the 5s.  Then we'll see which one matches for the T-shirt.  And if neither, we can re-swatch.

cammo blankie Ok--I started a new blankie for the short person.  Let's just say the log cabin one was a learning experience and leave it at that.

This is the Cammouflage Blankie.  You take some stash yarn you were going to knit the short person a sweater in, realize you don't have enough to knit it anymore, also realize there's absolutely no hope of getting more of it because it's been a year since you bought it and the local Wal-Mart where you got it doesn't even carry that kind of yarn anymore.  (They've cut their craft department by over 50%--it's actually probably about 25% of what it was.)  Then you notice some odd holes in the log cabin blankie--and immediately cast on some jumbo mitered squares to make your latest design--Hidden Geometry.  It's hidden because it's cammo, and geometry because of the squares.  :P  There wasn't enough to make the whole blanket out of the sand cammo I started with, so I went in search of more cammo yarn.  Wal-Mart actually had some, but a different brand than I started with, and the pale green (looks minty here, but it's more a pale sage) to use to border the blocks.

I also started something for myself.Vkandis started The Vkandis Sunlord Shawl.  It's a circular shawl, center out, and I'm knitting it on US4s.  At the moment.  I started on US2.5s, then US3s, since I didn't have double pointed needles in 4s.  It's being knit in the new Xie yarn from South West Trading Company.  It's 100% bamboo, so soft, slick, and shiny.  And I know this stuff blocks beautifully.  The shawl design is a sunburst, with multiple rays radiating out in several layers.  I just finished the first layer.  Some time soon, I'll switch from the melon to the rose, I just haven't gotten to it yet.  The difficulty with this yarn, though, aside from slickness, is fineness.  Think heavy sewing thread.  Each of those little cones started with over 900 yds of yarn on them.  Once you get used to that, you will probably love this yarn.  I certainly do--it's almost silk-like, I guess, but since the cost of silk tends to be prohibitive for me, I can't say for certain.  And I'm assuming that it doesn't hold heat like silk does.  But I like it anyway.

Aliens in my Diamonds

card weaving OK.  I took a card weaving class.  The first section (left to right) was what I was doing when I knew it wasn't quite working into the pattern, but didn't know how to fix it because I was following my instructor's directions.  Then you have the melted checkerboard look where she was trying to fix it, then the diamonds with the white alien faces,  Then the diamonds with the black alien faces.  Then the diamonds the way they're supposed to be.  Interesting note--the alien faces are supposed to be the reverse side of the diamonds.  My instructor has been doing some double weave with cards, and managed to smash the two together mentally, so that's why we had a few problems.
