  • June in Review

I haven't really posted in a month, but a lot has happened since then.

Firstly, I'm no longer seeing Cory. One year, 5 months.

Secondly, I'm no longer on probation! I'm now a full fledged employee who requires 2 weeks notice to be laid off, haha! To celebrate my new status, I took the day off work.

Thirdly, I've made several new friends. The problem is that they're all Owen's friends. Owen is my best buddy in Winnipeg; he's also the other EIT in my work group. I see him every day, and as his friends are pretty much my friends, I see him most weekends too. We're getting to the point where we're getting a bit sick of each other, but that's another story for another day.

Fourthly, I went to the Red River Ex with a few friends. The Ex is basically a seasonal amusement park. I won a stuffed animal on Whac-a-mole that I gave to Scott, who promptly turned it into an alcoholic version of Nacho Libre.

Fifthly, I played golf for the first time. I suck at golf =(

Sixthly, I bought a bedroom and mattress set. I've been having a heck of a time getting it though. They have delivered my set twice so far, and each time pieces were damaged. The last time they tried, my headboard was dented and my dresser had defects. Also, we've been trying to move my mattress set into the bedroom, and we can't seem to get the base through the door. It's been a crazy two weeks of bedroom shenanigans.

Seventhly, I went camping in Kenora. It was a crappy day as it rained intermittently. I did meet four new folks though!

Eightly, I went to Flin Flon on a business trip. There are three interesting things about Flin Flon. One is that it's a border city. It's located in two provinces: Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The second is that it's named after a fictional character Flintabbety Flonatin from the novel The Sunless City by J.E. Preston Muddock. The third is that it's an absolutely beautiful place in the summer.

Ninethly, I love the music of Gavin DeGraw. Cop Stop is currently one of my favourite songs. I've been listening to both Chariot Stripped and the self titled album at work every day, and his voice always cheers me up. I can't wait to see him in concert. Please come to Canada Gavin DeGraw!!!

Tenthly and finally, it's Canada Day on Tuesday. Yes, I know it's a sucky day for a holiday, but like I said earlier, I'm taking tomorrow off anyway. Happy Canada Day to all the Canadians!!! I can see fireworks from my balcony already!

  • It's my birthday...

...and we're heading to da club....the Comedy club...the only comedy club in this city by the sound of things.

Here's to hoping the comedian's good!

The opening acts were great (here and the dude from Muchmusic's Video on Trial (another link)), but the headlining comedian was so-so. I spent a lot of time cracking up at the lady two seats away who kept spontaneuously giggling loudly everytime there was a pause in the comedian's spiel and the fact that we made the comedian crack up several times because someone in the audience (like the lady) kept laughing before he could deliver his punch line or kept mocking him (main act here and here).

  • You never realise how lucky you are until you meet someone who's had it worse than you.

    I'm a lucky lady.

...and 4 days away from my 26th birthday. Whoa!

  • Why don't I post anymore?

I need to make new friends. This is a bit difficult as I'm deliberately being very anti-social.

In case I didn't make it clear in previous posts, I'm now officially living in Winnipeg. The public transit system is half decent, but it's not exactly the most convenient way to get around. Any events that may pop up will require some sort of direct transportation, which I don't have. This means I have to rely on others to get me around, and I'm pretty sure that gets annoying after the first couple times.

So I spend a lot of time at home, which means I don't meet anyone.

    *sigh*

  • My first week in the post-graduation work world...and I already hate taxes

Right now, I'd get married in a heartbeat, but not for all the sappy reasons usually associated with marriage. Not for love or companionship; not for sex, and most definitely not for children.

I'd get married because it makes sense financially.

Think about it. There are exceptions like food, toiletries and maybe an additional car, but generally speaking, two incomes are contributing to expenses normally accrued by one person. It's a whole lot cheaper to be married!

Then again, it depends on the combined income. I have an engineering degree, so that automatically puts me in the higher-than-average income bracket, plus I have a thing for intellectuals. This combination makes the Government happy, as they see this as an excuse to take as much from you as they can...unless you procreate. So to take full advantage of the situation, I'd have to have kids too and the more the better, which automatically translates to less disposable income because, in case you didn't know, kids are expensive! The only other option is to marry someone in a lower income bracket, which also defeats the whole purpose of marrying to better my financial situation.

So the lesson learnt from week is that, for tax purposes, it sucks to be single, childless and working...or married, childless and working...or married, child-ful and working...you know what? It's a whole lot simpler than that. The Government finds a way to screw you with taxes no matter what your situation.

One week of work and I'm already turning into a cynic.
