Lazy vs. Slow

Such a random thought, but I was watching the History Channel (one of my faves) today for a couple of hours.  I was watching a show called "Ancient Discoveries".  One of the episodes was about the Chinese and how archaeologists believe they have created our CURRENT modern inventions 2,000 years ago.  Everything was precise.  People were extremely skilled beyond their time. 

The rest of the world "invented" our modern "marvels" as late as 1900s, while the Chinese had already accomplished that thousands of years ago.  So my question is this...if the Chinese were so highly skilled and advanced 2,000 years ago, where have they been for the past 2,000 years?  Were they being lazy and just stopped developing?  As for the rest of the world, is everyone else just complete idiots and waited a couple thousand years to figure out what the ANCIENTS had already done 2,000 years ago?
