| It's rare that someone tells me a story that changes the way I view not only that person's life, but the lives of others around me. Sometimes I even have the opportunity to hear a story that affects me in some deep and profound way. I have been given that opportunity tonight by someone I did not expect.
If life is like a box of chocolates, I've recently found 2 of them that taste odd, but have the potential to taste really damn good. I just hope they don't turn out to be filled with craziness after I've spent the time going through the outer layers.
I want this semester's classes to be over already. =p | | |
| Alex is back in the 'burgh!
Being back at school is both welcomed and feared. Welcomed because I
need some intellectual stimulation. Driving a delivery truck for 10
hours a day isn't the most mentally challenging task.
I got a pic of this weird ass flower on the way back from My Thai on
Walnut St. I think it was a mutant because it had more of a rectangular
shape than a circular array of petals. There were similar flowers
nearby which looked pretty normal. Maybe I should send it into Nature
or something.
Photography, I'm discovering, is a lot more at its core than f/stops
and shutter speeds. It really is what one photography magazine article
says is a "connection" with the subject. Being able to connect, or
bring a subject closer to the viewer, transmitting its emotion in as
expressive a form as possible, is what turns photography from a science
to an art. There's something about nature photography, through it's
innately organic properties, that allows people to experience a small
piece of that subject without being there in person. Although, I guess
that's the appeal of many communication mediums. TV lets us be there
when the gold medal is won or the last person gets voted off the
island.
I can't help but think on the Natrat once in a while, how that affects
me today is a big factor in the decisions I make regarding the
newspaper. A friend who has been serving an extended tour of duty in
Iraq passed me a URL to a particularly nasty article he saw about me.
It was really surprising 1.) that he would actually care about what was
happening in my life while he was facing life and death around him over
there and 2.) how months later, the issue seemed to creep up out of
nowhere. A day into the semester and I'm again neck deep in the issue,
rethinking what I've said, questioning my own actions like I've done
many times before. Hating the local media for misrepresenting me and
being angrier because no one cares when the "bad guys" get
misrepresented.
On the other hand, I'm really curious as to what the commission has to
say about me and the paper I was running. I wonder if they actually saw
me as a person, with human factors to be taken into consideration, or
as just another tool, a pawn to use to further an agenda of false and
artificial diversity. If it's the latter, then they can go to hell.

| So in my typical rush to spend my hard-earned summer savings
IMMEDIATELY, I have just bought a Nikon D70 digital SLR (those big
heavy cameras REAL photographers use with the big lenses) off of eBay.
I never thought I'd be able to afford it until school but I got a
bangin' deal: $1,077 for a $1,300 set of equipment. now I have plenty
left over to buy a 512 mb CompactFlash Ultra II memory card and a solid
carrying case for it. I know I probably should have shopped around a
bit more, talked to my old photo boss more and JT more, but it was just
one of those things where a.) I have to have it ASAP and b.) from the
data I DO have, it's obvious there isn't much else in that price range
that I'd be happy with.

| So....
A lot has happened since my last Xanga post. Seeing as I just got done
partying at my house and I'm still flying the kite, I think I'll give a
little update.
Since the last post I've gained a summer job, suprisingly decent
grades, a public shaming in front of 500,000 people, gained and lost a
girlfriend, and lost a newspaper job.
Don't even ask about how I failed Best Buy's personality test.
FUCK YOU BEST BUY!
So, the party seemed to be a hit, everyone said they had a great time,
so I'm glad. The Cuban host in me is satisfied. Made most of the money
back on the 1/2 keg, can't believe it's so cheap (50$) ! Got an
offer from Chris, a bartender friend of Gina's, to run the next party,
might take him up on it. He guarenteed double my money back, we'll see
if that was just drunken babble.
Oh, people liked my t-shirt, as they always do. I admit, I like the
attention I get from wearing it, it satisfies my modest vanity. Can't
wait to see the pictures. Another bit of good news, nobody puked where
they weren't supposed to! YAY!.
Recent Big Ideas Alex is Pondering:
I've actually got a career plan lined up. Now I just have to get my degree and get a job! YAY!
Can't wait for the 4th and 5th Harry Potter books, they're going to look fantastic on the big screen.
I refuse to see I, Robot out of respect for the book its so savagely and distortedly based on.
Pot should be legal.
That is all.

| Wow, it's been a while, eh? ROUUUND! In Miami for spring break. I
haven't seen them many hot girls since the tabasco sauce bikini
contest.
Went to my first bar last night after being awake for 30 hours straight. It was boring. I identified 3 types of people:
- Geeks who can't dance who were dressed like geeks.
- People there with friends, talking only to their friends.
- Girls in small amounts of tight clothing walking around really rapidly or with their boyfriends.
It was Fat Tuesday's, it seemed like one of the cooler bars too.
Maybe going with friends is the trick. My hosts, while gracious and
accomodating, are not yet the caliber of friends I have back home and
in the 'burgh.
Tomorrow: Pool, boat, Tom Clancy, Rave afterparty (sans X).
Adios Cubanitos
