Mirth and MatterLove is not love which alters when its alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove: O no! It is an ever fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken.

Dear World,

Today I leave for a wedding in NM.  Should be fun.

Today I got official Residency and my Learner's Permit.  Now I am looking for generous minded people over 21 who would be willing to help me learn to drive.

*hopeful look*

It is always really hard to blog…one never really knows what to say, how much to say, or in what manner to say it.   Let’s see—work continues to go well.  The weather is very hot and muggy but it isn’t that much of a nuisance as long as one remembers to drink plenty of water.  It is really fun to be able to get to learn to be more of a “fixer-upper” type of person.  I am learning to use tools of all sorts, and how to just sort of figure out how to solve a problem on my own.  That, and I can clean a bathroom in 14 minutes flat.  I have also discovered that a first pay check does wonders for reconciling a person to their ridiculous laundry bills.

It is still somewhat less than intellectually stimulating, but I continue to listen to lots of books on tape.  Thus far, I am working my way through “Jane Eyre,” a series called “x philosopher in 90 Minutes” (thus far I have listened to Hume, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard), and “101 Dalmatians.”  I am enjoying the first and last, though I admit to still disliking Mr. Rochester.  He is arrogant, overbearing, and I can’t like a man who tries to trick a girl half his age into a bigamous marriage.  I am not sure I recommend the Philosopher in 90 minutes series…I am enjoying them as they give a good biography and a decent summary or their writings in a very short period of time, but the author of the series is apparently very anti-Christian—in doctrine, ethics, and morals—and doesn’t understand its off marriage to philosophy almost as much as he hates it.  I also found Peter Kreeft, Budachevski (not how you spell his name, but the misspelling is phonetic) and Paul Johnson on CD, so I am really happy.

Another great thing is the weather, we have had some of the most amazing thunderstorms.  The one we had last night came in so fast, and the clouds were so high, that when it came over we could stand and watch the rain fall down on us before it hit us.  It was beautiful and the lightning danced beautifully.  I had forgotten how much I love summer thunderstorms.

And, to close, in honor of life, the universe and everything….one of my favorite poems by Hopkins…

48. That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire and of the comfort of the Resurrection

CLOUD-PUFFBALL, torn tufts, tossed pillows ' flaunt forth, then chevy on an air-

built thoroughfare: heaven-roysterers, in gay-gangs ' they throng; they glitter in marches.

Down roughcast, down dazzling whitewash, ' wherever an elm arches,

Shivelights and shadowtackle in long ' lashes lace, lance, and pair.

Delightfully the bright wind boisterous ' ropes, wrestles, beats earth bare

        5

Of yestertempest’s creases; in pool and rut peel parches

Squandering ooze to squeezed ' dough, crust, dust; stanches, starches

Squadroned masks and manmarks ' treadmire toil there

Footfretted in it. Million-fuelèd, ' nature’s bonfire burns on.

But quench her bonniest, dearest ' to her, her clearest-selvèd spark

        10

Man, how fast his firedint, ' his mark on mind, is gone!

Both are in an unfathomable, all is in an enormous dark

Drowned. O pity and indig ' nation! Manshape, that shone

Sheer off, disseveral, a star, ' death blots black out; nor mark

Is any of him at all so stark

        15

But vastness blurs and time ' beats level. Enough! the Resurrection,

A heart’s-clarion! Away grief’s gasping, ' joyless days, dejection.

                Across my foundering deck shone

A beacon, an eternal beam. ' Flesh fade, and mortal trash

Fall to the residuary worm; ' world’s wildfire, leave but ash:

        20

In a flash, at a trumpet crash,

I am all at once what Christ is, ' since he was what I am, and

This Jack, joke, poor potsherd, ' patch, matchwood, immortal diamond,

                Is immortal diamond.

First Day of Work

***For security purposes, all sorts of liberties have been taken with names***

Yesterday was my first day of work, and yes Mom, I will survive the summer.   Custodial is a lot of work, and I am sore, but it is gloriously relaxing to do a job that actually can be finished.  We moved chairs, cleaned bathrooms, felt the power of being able to get where everyone else is not allowed, and got ot know each other a bit.  For some obscure reason, our supervisor has been officially dubbed, "The Grand Cheezeburger" which makes us three, his faithful minions, "Team Cheez-its".  Our team consists of Adara, a bouncy, tiny, blonde who has an obsession with dipping frenchfries in mayonaise.  Jay, the only experienced member of the team, who can tell you to reclean a sink so sweetly you don't even mind and who is the first one the author has found who actually likes french fries dipped in sweet and sour sauce.  And then there is Curly, who is in Disney World and therefore cannot contribute impressions to be recorded in this entry.  for example, I have no idea how she likes her fries.  The final member is yours truly, who is....apparently the first girl ever to want to run a buffer.  I like fries, I don't really care what gets put on them, but I tend to prefer them with just salt.  Finally, there is the Grand Cheezeburger himself.  He is sweet, laid-back, and, I think, has no idea what to make of his team of Cheez-its spontaneously singing "The Cheeseburger" song to him.  He also has a punnish sense of humor, which should make the summer quite interesting.  Let's see...that is the outline, post questions or preferred things to be heard about in comments and I shall try to oblige in the next post.

Physics

Having just finished physics, and not incidently committed classical heresy by doing Physics after Metaphysics, and I am pretty sure I have passed.  I also know now I have learned something in my years at college...I never fought harder for a D, and I have rarely been as happy for a passing grade.  It would not have happened sans the grace of God, the grace and teaching brilliance of Dr. K. It taught me more life skills than math, but it was good.
