Mike Huckabee is a True Conservative...from Paul Weyrich

Tomorrow, Tuesday, is primary election day in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Please vote!

And I believe that Mike Huckabee is the best man for the job. Here, from Paul Weyrich, a strongly conservative Christian statesman.

Conservative Icon Paul Weyrich Endorses Huckabee

PAUL WEYRICH: "I call upon all my fellow conservatives to get out and support Governor Huckabee. A big vote for him is the best way to send a message to Senator McCain and the Republican Establishment that this is an election, not a coronation."

"I believe that the voters in this Republican nomination contest—here in Virginia and across the country—deserve a real choice. And Governor Huckabee is clearly the conservative alternative. He is the best choice, and he is my choice. So I am voting for him on Tuesday, here in Virginia.

I don’t buy the idea that John McCain is a true conservative. Nor do I buy the idea that Mike Huckabee should get out of this contest. The people in the Potomac area - Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia – deserve a choice.. In addition, we have many important states coming up, including my home state of Wisconsin. Folks in all those states deserve a choice a real choice.

I had been a supporter of Mitt Romney, but now I am very glad that Governor Huckabee has decided to stay in the race. I appreciate that he is staying in, just as I appreciate that Governor Huckabee and Senator McCain are not going at each other’s throats—a vigorous debate about important issues is the healthiest thing possible for the Republican Party.

Governor Huckabee has articulated some very clear differences with Senator McCain: on immigration, on McCain Feingold, and also on the McCain Lieberman global warming scheme. Mike Huckabee is much more solid on the social issues, including right to life. Yes, Senator McCain says that he has a right to life record, but he can’t be supportive of embryonic stem cell research and have a clear right to life record, because rights to lifers, including me, want to protect all life, from conception of natural death.

Governor Huckabee is also good on marriage, insisting that it be limited to one man and one woman. Unfortunately, Senator McCain refused to vote for the marriage amendment.

These are important differences.
By voting for Governor Huckabee, people will be telling Senator McCain and the Republican Party establishment that they better accommodate these conservatives and their heartfelt beliefs, or else they the GOP will not be able to win the general election this November. Like Governor Huckabee, I have great respect for Senator McCain, but he and his Republican Party backers have to make sure that they accommodate the base of the Republican Party.

If they don’t, Senator McCain may find that the conservative grassroots won’t turn out to vote this November. I know my fellow conservatives. I have been active in the conservative movement since 1960. I was an early supporter of Barry Goldwater, and I was a delegate for Ronald Reagan in 1976 and 1980. And so I remind all the Washington DC-oriented political strategists that outside-the-beltway conservatives don’t have to vote for every candidate if they don’t want to. They can stay home, or they can skip over some candidates. That is a very real possibility this year. I have had hundreds of people that have contacted me, telling me, “I can’t vote for McCain.” I hope that Senator McCain will accommodate those people, for the sake of the conservative movement, as well as the Republican Party. But to repeat: I am voting for Governor Huckabee.

The Republican Party must reach out to social conservatives, like me, and so Mike Huckabee is solid. But Mike Huckabee also appeals to working people. The Republican Party by and large ignores the concerns of these people, especially when they are hurting. Governor Huckabee is the only candidate who has consistently reached out, during this campaign, to those who are hurting. It’s great for the GOP hierarchy to say that the fundamentals of the economy are sound. But it’s even more important to concentrate on real people, and to look for sound conservative solutions. Mike Huckabee is one of them by his own background, and so naturally he listens to them. By voting for him, millions of ordinary Americans will make their voice heard, loud and clear.

I call upon all my fellow conservatives to get out and support Governor Huckabee. A big vote for him is the best way to send a message to Senator McCain and the Republican Establishment that this is an election, not a coronation."

Paul Weyrich is the Chairman and CEO of the Free Congress Foundation.

Dubya!

On Wednesday, my lovely wife and I were invited to the White House to see President George Walker Bush give his speech announcing his second veto of Congress' embryonic stem cell bill.

It was my first time at the White House (Rachel went once in 1st grade) and neither of us had ever seen President Bush in person, so we were REALLY excited.

rae(Rachel outside of the White House)

After we got in, we were able to wander around with the various other people and look at the 1st floor of the East Wing. There were tons of lovely paintings:

me and the gipper(Me and President Reagan

me and the first black prez(Me and President Clinton, LOL)

Rachel got to meet Rep. Trent Franks from AZ, a solid, homeschool friendly, conservative Congressman I know.

Then, we were ushered into the room where President Bush would speak. The room tingled with excitement. We were able to get a seat in the third row, which was only about 15 feet from where the President would speak. I sat next to Gary Bauer and was able to introduce myself to him.

And then we waited. While we waited, we asked the Air Force major standing on the sidelines if the painting to our right was the original George Washington painting that Dolly Madison took with her right before the British burned the White House in 1814 - and it was! The actual story is that after the militia, President Madison, and the soldiers guarding Washington fled from Bladensburg in the face of the oncoming British invasion, the locals in DC started fleeing. Dolly Madison and a few servants were the only ones left in the White House. She was bravely rushing around, ordering the servants to take everything they could before the British arrived. She was about to leave, when she saw the famous Gilbert portrait of George Washington. She tried to get it down, but it was too large with the frame. So she broke the frame, rolled up the canvas, and took it with her. Legend has it that she slipped  out the back door of the White House as the British soldiers came in the front door. But, she saved this priceless painting from the flames:

We watched as several adult stem cell scientists and a family and little girl whose life was saved using adult stem cells were ushered in. Then, a page came and placed Mr. Bush's speech on the podium. We all waited...breathlessly. Rachel snapped a photo of the news crew as they got ready:news crew

And then, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of the United States!" He walked in, with purpose and briskly, with a smile on his face, and came  up to the podium.

He began to speak about how human life is precious, and how embryonic stem cell research kills a living human embryo in search of a cure. He spoke about how this is an ethical violation that was terrible, and that the U.S. tax payers have never paid for such research, and that was why he would veto the bill. We all applauded loudly.

It was so funny to see him sometimes mangle his words, and talk in a real folksy, down to earth, but from the heart way. I love President Bush!

Then he finished and shook hands with the Congressmen, Senators, and other dignitaries in the front row. We got some great pics:

And then, he left. And the energy drained out of the room. Rachel turned to me and said, "oh, that's sad, he's not here anymore!"

And then it was cool because Trent Franks, who was in front of us turned around and wished us good day, and then we all left. I was so happy:

will happy

And then we left and felt very patriotic and blessed to be in a nation where our leader is democratically elected, he is a born again Christian, and he stands up for the Right to Life.patriotic

Mawwwwwigge!!!!!!!!!

It is with great satisfaction, not a minor amount of "I told you so!" and a great abundance of joy, that I post this to say that my ex-fabulous housemate (only ex-ed because I got married to the most wonderful woman in the world, and not ex-ed because he shot me accidently one dark night which we always joked would happen, but I digress....), the one-and-only John Caleb Orcutt, III, that sometimes annoying, usually amazing, somehow-we-avoided-coming-to-blows-at-one-point-in-our-relationship, totally cool, hip, amazing dude with the guitar, smelly-station-wagon-wrecker, buddy on the late night Lethal Weapon viewings and other guy-flicks and Glock 23 toting friend of mine, and his wonderful Lauren, got engaged on Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can read all about it here: http://www.xanga.com/jco3rd/579833677/item.html?nextdate=last

Married life is amazing, guys. Good luck as you start your adventure, and God bless.
