Dinner Table Conversation

The smaller carbon-based life form has an idiosyncratic view of the world.

A: You know that study about happiness?  It turns out that Denmark has the highest average happiness rating.
C: Why is that?
B: Universal health care.
A: Otherwise know as "socialism"

...

A: The last time a third party candidate won the presidency, 600,000 Americans were killed.
B: Who was that?
A: Lincoln
C: Sure, the Republicans were a "third party" back in that day.

...

A: I wonder if the Civil War was preventable?  I bet it was.
C: How would you have prevented it?
A: Not elect Lincoln.

Visiting Mom

I arrived safe in Bryan, TX, after only 14 hours of travel.  Mom was happy to see me, and we are settled together very comfortably.

B. took me to the airport at 0700.  My American Airlines flight took off on time, but there were bad thunderstorms in the midwest, and the flight was rerouted south to avoid them.  We got to DFW an hour late.  Since I had only an hour layover, that flight landed just as my connecting flight took off.  The airline automatically booked me to fly to Hobby at 4:20PM, but after wandering the concourse for a half an hour, I was finally able to find an agent who would put me on standby for the next AA flight from DFW to IAH.  There were 28 people on the standby list, but I was number two.  Two people got on standby. God is good.

I had booked the Ground Shuttle (a van service) from IAH to College Station.  Since I had missed the one I had booked,  I had to rebook myself on the 6:45PM shuttle. There were only three of us on at 10 passenger van.  The guy pulled out his GPS and was able to find my Mom's house just fine.  I recognized the mailbox.  I arrived about 8:45PM.

I presume my brother-in-law has his own internet connection.  I found a lynksys wireless router, turned power on to it, and have a connection.    So I'm on the 'net for now.

My mom is frail and forgetful. but we are getting along just fine.  The three cats seem happy to have another person in the house.  One of them is settled in by my laptop, asleep. [S]he wanted to sit on the keyboard and lick my face.

Change with the Times

During a downturn, it is all too easy for job seekers to “live in a state of fear,” said Janet White, author of “Secrets of the Hidden Job Market.”

“It’s that fear that’s going to poison anything they try to do,” she said. “Whatever you believe to be true becomes your experience.”

With the right attitude, on the other hand, job seekers “can often turn this crisis into a real advantage for themselves” by moving their life in a new and more fulfilling direction, Mr. Bolles said. When they look back, he said, they often realize that “this is the best thing that ever happened to me.”[1]

The Circle of Life

We were driving to church this morning along a two-lane road past a horse pasture, and as I rounded a curve I saw a couple dozen huge black birds flocking on the ground and sitting on the rails.  "Something has died," I thought.  Sure enough, as we drove home after church, we saw that they were buzzards, they were all still there, and in the rain-sodden gully there were scraps of hide that must've belonged to a deer.  It was scary how huge and fat the buzzards were.

7 random factoids about me

I was tagged by reveusetoujours (who probably forgot that this is my official Xanga )  I will put in DIFFERENT random factoids than the ones I had last time I was tagged.

Link to the person who tagged you and post the rules on your blog. Share 7 random/weird facts about yourself. Tag 7 random people at the end of your post, include links to their blogs. Let each person know by leaving a comment on their blog.

7 random factoids about me:

1. I lost 30 pounds since Valentine's day.

2. I typically get up at 4:00 AM.  On weekends I sleep in until 8AM.

3. I grew up in the Pacific northwest, so raw, gray days like today, where it is not quite raining, the you have to run the windshield wipers anyway, where the clouds just seem to come right down to the ground, but it's not real foggy yet, days like this fill me with energy.

4. I sit crosslegged on my chair at my desk. (not one leg over the other but both feed up above and below my knees, the way I would sit on the floor.

5. My car is a 1992 Toyota Corolla, which I paid cash for, new.  I love that car because it is just basic transportation with no pretension of being sexy or sporty.  It's got a manual transmission, just because.

6. We have 14 floor-to-ceiling bookcases and 8 half-hight bookcases in our house full of books.   The last time we counted, there were 4000 volumes.  We are doing out part to combat the decline in reading.

7. I got over half of my good shirts (the ones I wear to the office or to church) on FreeCycle.
