Photographing a Wedding and then an Earthquake

Can you imagine what it was like to have been photographing a wedding in Sichuan, China when 7.9
earthquake hit and shakes for three minutes with the entire church crashing down?  It was a good thing they weren't doing the family formals at the altar at the time.  (photos courtesy of Dragon Photo, ND Daily and Sohu.com)

From what understand, the thirty-three guests miraculously survived it.  (thank x for the correction)  See the whole story here.  It's in Chinese.

Let's not forget about the victims of the cyclone in Burma too.  Burma was one of my favorite countries in my travels.

Please give to a charity of your choice to aid the victims of the earthquake of Sichuan, China and the cyclone of Burma.

unbelievable timing. Amazing shots. Considering the destruction in those pics, "only" 3 missing guests is a miracle.

Ok. 33 is terrible. Assuming that most of their families and friends were gathered here - that's pretty concentrated.

Leland......those would be extreme conditions to be working under. I am sadden by their plight and feel helpless as many people would upon seeing such devastation. You and I also live in earthquake proned locations. We must be prepare for such an occurrence.

Hi,

all of the party survived.

Chinese text: 和当地爱灾的村民一起展开自救不幸中的万幸,在教堂中抽照的三十三人全部脱险。
Bablefish's rough transl.: "And disaster's villagers with the locality launching together helps oneself unbelievably lucky, pull out in the church according to 33 people are out of danger completely."

Such a high death toll would not fit to the fact, that none of the group started to bury out the bodies.

I wonder at what point do the number of dead become meaningless to the average human? Me, I probably only really know a handful of people intimately, so when you get to figures like "50 thousand dead in China" and "100 thousand dead in Burma" a strange meaninglessness kicks in. I guess it would just be too much for one human to take in... All those people who lay there in the rubble, and never got found. And one disaster out-publicizing the other. Just awful.

For helping those in Burma directly (rather than via the aid the Government allow in) go here:

Wow, thanks for pooling the photos together and sharing this.

It's amazing to us, but imagine how tragic for them...

To answer your first question, no.  A tragedy on that scale is inconceivable, it's so terrible--there's no disaster (natural or otherwise) that's happened in the US that I can compare it to (at least not to my knowledge).

I agree. If I hear a story about 27 students getting gunned down, I'd think, "Oh those poor kids and their families!" But when you hear an absurd about like 50-100 thousand, it's so unfathomable, that you're right, the meaning of human life is just lost.

Wow - thank you for sharing these! I came via Clicked (you're famous!) and am just astonished. That last picture, of the church (?) before and after, just took my breath away. Imagine if they'd been doing those photographs inside... it's a miracle anyone survived, much less the entire wedding party.
