how did those months pass so quickly?
after my exam, bobby and i finally felt like we could begin our year. but, as we recounted our year thus far, we realized that God had blessed us with lots of fun times during the first half of the year, including visits from bobby's mom and friends from baltimore (the woos and the kims), not to mention tons of good news via babies and other things. sadly, we didn't take enough pictures to catch everything. but here's a taste of our goings on over the last couple months:my basil and cilantro are all growns up! my jalapeno plant is also growing well.
i would often procrastinate by staring into our backyard and trying to catch a pic of visiting birds.
bobby's mom came from california and stayed with us for a week in early may.
here we are at the farmer's market, buying some flowers.
memorial day weekend, the woos and the kims came down from baltimore!
(sorry sarah, we forgot to take a picture with you guys!)
after the exam, we spent 5 days in boston, our old stomping grounds! we got to see sam/jenny plus all our other friends and some new babies, too. again, no pictures of them. what were we thinking? (i have to give a shout-out to jamie and lester for taking us in for most of our stay - thanks so much!)

(love the new trash cans!)
at least we remembered to take a few pictures:

and lastly...back in april we went to a cook-out for a chuch friend's bday. i took this picture trying to capture the party in the park...but afterwards, i realized i took a picture of a WEIRD looking tree! look at its face, like it's saying "ooooh!" hee hee, i can't help but crack up everytime i see this picture.

getting back into life
so the exam i've been studying for all year has finally come and gone. the last few weeks until the exam, my life was basically work, study, eat, and sleep. (note: bobby was not part of that cycle) poor husband, completely ignored and neglected. fortunately, he had basketball playoffs to occupy a chunk of his time.
the exam was really really tough. seriously. i'm operating under the assumption that i did not pass. (i'll find out in August.) at first it was really depressing - gosh, all that time wasted, only to have to do it again next year! but now i'm ok with it - whether or not i passed, i learned a lot and i will just leave the rest up to God.
it's also a huge relief that i no longer have an excuse to be so selfish. i was soooo selfish with my time. i could feel the self-absorbtion seeping into my heart and taking over my life. just because of an exam! i should consider it a luxury to be able to studying during this time in my life when i have the freedom to do so. sorry - i don't mean to make such a big deal out of this exam, but it seriously took over my life, and i'm so happy it's over! (for now, anyway)
a few days after the exam, bobby and i went up to boston and had a blast hanging out with friends and re-exploring the city. got back early this week only to be slammed at work - but the trip was worth it!
anyway, now i'm slowly getting back to my prior life. i have a couple hundred emails i need to go through. lots of cleaning to do. catching up on work, friends, and church. and of course back to xanga - catching up on others' posts, and also i have so many pictures to post from the last couple months! this is on my "to-do" list for this weekend.
oh, and in a couple weeks, bobby and i are heading out west with a couple friends for a week of camping in the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas. we're very very excited! here are some pictures of one place we plan to hike to - Antelope Canyon in Paige, Arizona. can't wait.

procrastination
i read about this woman's blog in the wsj journal a few weeks ago. she started out blogging on the side and is now so popular that her husband even quit his job to manage the business-side of her blogging full time. the article sort of characterizes her as a "mommy blogger" (which is becoming quite the phenomenon lately and a huge target of advertising for baby retailers). but i don't consider her a mommy blogger - i have no kid and not yet planning - but once i started reading her blog, i became hooked. i thinks she's a very open, honest, and entertaining writer. plus her and her husband are really into photography, and have these two fun dogs. every day, along with her blog, she posts a "daily picture" and a "daily chuck" (the name of one of her dogs), and a "daily style" (random fun things) - they always look great and often put a smile on my face.
i also love how she's formatted and set up her blog. it's the perfect 2-minute procrastination for me in between my studies.
if you're in the mood, check it out! be sure to read the "about this site" link to get a quick background - i think it's important to do this before you read any of her entries.

and i thought i knew my husband...
so i get this call at work from my husband today:bobby: lois, do you have access to cnn?
me: uh, yeah, why?
bobby: go to cnn.com!
me: yes, hang on...
bobby: what do you see?
me: umm....I SEE YOU STANDING NEXT TO ANOTHER GUY WHO HAS HIS ARM AROUND YOU!
bobby: (laughing) do you really think he looks like me?
me: (laughing...tearing...gasping)
bobby: (still laughing) hello? hello?
me: (still laughing and probably looking ridiculous at my desk)
bobby: ok, gotta go, i'm gonna call my sister.
ok, so if you really look at the picture, they don't really look all that much alike - but for a split second, it totally weirded me out. i think it's the goatee.

p.s. is everyone in the world on facebook? i've decided to join...in june, after my exam. i'll see you soon. but i'll keep posting on xanga (mostly for our familes). i've been a little MIA - been busy with my nose in the books studying for the exam. the big day is june 7th...can't wait till it's over!

grace community
The primary purpose of my xanga page is to update friends and family near and far (mostly far). Most of my entries are pictures with comments here and there about our "goings on." As I was looking back at some of my past entries, I realized that I don't often share about our church - mostly because I don't have a fun picture to go along with it. Back in 2006, we were so sad to leave our church and community and Boston - but looking back at the last couple years, it really feels like we were meant to move on and become a part of a new church and community here in NC, and we love it. So from time to time I will try to be intentional about sharing about my "everyday goings on" as it intersects with our church.
Our evening tonight: A couple from our church organizes lectures at their home a few times during the year - an informal gathering to learn and discuss various topics that are relevant to Christians and non-Christians alike. The "lectures" are usually led by a member of our church who has expertise or experience with the topic. We don't always attend, but we did this evening. Today's topic was "Learning About Autism," led by a member who works as a therapist/trainer, and also a family from our church who has four children - the youngest of whom was very recently diagnosed with autism.
I learned a lot about autism and the family's personal experiences. But more than that - as we listened to, loved on, cried with, and prayed over this family, I felt the Spirit binding our hearts together as we collectively turned to God for strength and support. There is a special closeness that arises when people pour out their struggles and expose their weaknesses, and when others respond with love and support. And when all of this happens within the context of a church community with Christ as the reason we gather at all - it's just awesome.
