    Life is full of blessings...

Here are some of God's gifts the past few weeks that I don't want to forget to be grateful for:

    1)  Laughter

    Silly Ky

Ky is learning his manners.  At dinner the other night we served up some hot dogs and Ketchup.  When we squeezed the Ketchup bottle it made a farting sound (as all good ketchup bottles do).  Jon and I didn't notice the sound until we heard Ky say, "Excuse me for ketchup".

Sometimes Ky will just come up to me and say, "say excuse me mama?"  And I'll be like, "what are you talking about?"  Then I'll realize that maybe I sat on the leather couch in it way that made it sound like a fart and he must've wrongly assumed that I had been eating too many beans .

    2) Joy

The camaraderie between Ky and Caden has definitely increased.  Every morning (and sprinkled throughout the day) Ky will greet Caden and say (as he gives him a headlock hug), "Awww... he's so cute, chubby cheeks".

They know how to make each other laugh.  Caden will often do funny things, make silly faces to get a laugh from Ky and vice versa.   Sometime during the day I can expect for the two of them to be roaring with laughter, chasing each other or hiding behind my curtains.  Or sometimes they are just playing seperately at different parts of the train table together... each in their own car/train world .

This is just a random video of Caden "dancing" or trying to jump but it's more like a gallop. It also shows Caden's wide range of emotions within a 5 second span.

    3) Poop

There isn't anything I get more excited about these days (besides when Jon comes home ) than seeing my son's poop in the potty and not in his underwear or floor.  I decided to start potty training Ky again a week or two ago (on the fly)... this time around is so different than the 1st time I tried to train him (that could be another post in and of itself).  He has so much more initiative time around and is doing a great job!

    Potty Power

This is Ky saying "I have potty power!"  I don't know why he has my pink head band on his head.

    Sweet story:

The other day, I had sinned against Ky.  He said, "mama" like maybe 200 times while I was downstairs trying to get something done (which is hard when your potty training with an active 1 year old)... and this was AFTER he asked to go to the potty RIGHT before his overdue naptime (which I quickly judged as his way of "buying time" or getting out of bed.)  I charged upstairs, foaming at the mouth... and spoke to him harshly, impatiently... obviously, protecting my idol of comfort and ease.

By God's grace I asked him for forgiveness later but when it was time for bed & to pray together.  I think I suggested that he pray for Jon (which he did) but then he prayed, "I sank you for mama, I pray that mama not get angry in the potty room."  I was so touched by his sincere prayer, so convicted.  I'm so grateful to God for this little boy... and for God's spirit.

  • A broken fingernail and blister later...

Today after mopping the floors I decide that I’d start reupholstering my dining room chairs!

Do I know how to sew?  No.

Do I know what I’m doing?  Not at all.

Will I finish the project?  Probably not (knowing my track record) but hey maybe I’ll surprised myself… right now I feel very determined.

See, living by your feelings can be a very exciting thing… you never know where it’s going to take you on any given day!

    up2

I had to document this b/c I think it might be my first time using a power tool.  How did it feel?  Invigorating.  I felt like I was reunited with a long lost limb.

    up1

I had to use the phillips screwdriver (flatheaded thing) to loosen the tightly bound industrial staples

    up6

I had to use the phillips screwdriver (flatheaded thing) to loosen the tightly bound industrial staples

    up3

then I had to wriggle my pliers in and pull ‘em up from the plywood...

    up7

this was done oh maybe 100+ times

    up5

    finished product (applause please :O).

Now I just have to pull up the threading on the cushion cover I pulled off and trace the pieces onto a pattern or fabric, do some measurements and learn how to use my sewing machine .

    An eye for beauty

     Ky man

One way that Ky often surprises me is his eye beyond the mundane.  He often spots "happy faces", vegtables in the clouds, even the crust of his PB&J can often be letters or numbers.  Today as we were ate breakfast together he pointed to a little vase of flowers I had set on the table and said, "Hey yook, it's Dada...Ky & caden... and there's you mama!"

     Our Family2 Our family

So here's our new family portrait.  Jon, me and my precious little boys.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

I love being this guy's momma too.  Jon called me out from the kitchen yesterday and this is what I saw:

    View from the kitchen

This boy is a lot of fun, keeps me on my toes...

Here's one of Caden's favorite things to do... surfing and "dancing" on the rocking chair in his room.  Needless to say this guy is regularly wounded (sorry video is shot from my camera and has no sound)...

    Ilovebabylegs

maybe that's why God made him plumper and squishier than Ky... he knew this guy needed more padding :O).  I love this picture... I have a soft spot in my heart for chubby baby legs and fat baby feet... they make me happy .

  • Poor Ky...

After 2 doses of Benadryl and monitoring (I slept in his room so I could keep my ears on his breathing) he woke up with a face that was threatening to take over his eye balls (worse than last night) though he seemed chipper I didn't want to take any chances so I called Shbangz and shipped Caden to her house (thank you Susanna!) and took Ky to his doctor's office to see if I should move onto the Emergency room (continued below)....

    4poorky 3poorky 2poorky 1Poorky

Basically crabs have some potent allergen.  Obviously Ky is allergic, he said the next time he encounters crabs again the symptoms can be more adverse.  He gave me an oral steriod to help the swelling for 5 days and I'm going to be giving him benadryl for the next week and continue to monitor him.  Thank you for your prayers!  And thank you Susanna for being willing to watch Caden on a whim!

  • Ky quote

Tonight Jon was praying with Ky before bed.  He asked Ky to pray that God would help Uncle Ivan (Jon's sister Jennifer's husband) find a new job.  Here is Ky's prayer: "Dear Jesus, I pray for Iwan.  Please help him to find a job for Jesus..."

  • So enjoying...

    God's undeserved blessings:

    August 27 2008 049

We went to Butler's Orchard this past weekend to pick big, juicy rasberries!  I'm so grateful that a place like this is only 10 minutes from our house!

    August 27 2008 064

Jon surprised me a few months ago by making me a Crepe's a-go-go-quality Strawberry Crepe from scratch!  So we are saving money by making our own crepes now and needless to say he put his crepe skills to work with our fresh pick berries... they were out of this world!  The picture just doesn't justify it.

    Greenbriar August 2008

This is one of our new favorite places to hang out now, Greenbriar State Park.  It's the best of both worlds, beach + grassy park w/benches & grills.  We typically go from noon 'til 7pm, the boys do great.

    August 27 2008 011

Caden is a little fish.  He ADORES the water, he just crawls straight into it regardless if it goes over his head.  He kicks his feet and dog paddles if we support him.  He dunks his own face in the water as if to coach himself on how to hold his breath... he's a lot of work but so much fun!

    August 27 2008 005

Ky yuvs sand (that's how Ky says "love" :O).  He's pictured here with Shelby Campbell and Little B.K  This was our first time @ this park.  We went with the Castro Clan (who introduced us to this place), Korzi's and the Campbells.

    Greenbriar Sohns

This was our second trip to Greenbriar w/ the Sohns.  I love how the Sohns are always available for some spur of the moment fun :O)!

The kids had a blast in this little boat.  I wanted to get a ride in it too but Jon was too embarrassed to take me .  Ah well, we're going again this Monday with my parents so more pictures to come maybe.

    ____________________________________________________________________________

One last thing... today maybe the last day that Ky will be sleeping in his little big boy bed :O( so I took one last picture for memory's sake.  He'll be moving into a twin sized bunk bed I got on Craigslist a few months ago... and the next thing you know he'll probably be going off to college!!  :O(

This is just a random photo from today.  Some mommies and I met up at the Rio and here's Caden sporting his new walking skillz.  He's SO CUTE!

    Good stuff!

This picture is totally unrelated to this post. Just a cute pic of Caden playing peek-a-boo with stickers on his head (thanks to big brother Ky).

Notes from Shepherding Your Child's Heart by Ted Tripp, p.g 131-132:

"Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  Honor your father and mother"- which is the first commandment with a promise that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land."                                                                                                              -Ephesians 6:1-3

"It is imperative that your children learn to honor and obey.  It will go well with them.  Their obedience is not secured so that you can be obeyed for your sake.  You must be obeyed for their sakes!  They are the direct beneficiaries of honoring and obeying Mom and Dad

The circle of submission to parental authority is the place of safety.  By implication, being outside that circle is a place of danger; it will not go well with him and he will not enjoy a long life.  Your child is in danger if he is rebellious and disobedient.  You, therefore, must move swiftly to return him to the circle of protection and safety."

Note to self:  I'm on a rescue mission! The imminent danger is not Joker... the imminent danger lives inside a cute, drooly little boy that sucks his fingers and walks around in a diaper!  All the seeds of hell live in this child (and in my own heart too) but thanks to Jesus, the forces of evil have been conquered at Calvary.

I am not the main character in this rescue mission! It is not all about what I do or don't do right in parenting. Yes, my role is vital and so very important BUT from me, to me and through me are NOT all things! (Romans 11 & Colossians 1).

I need this hammered into my brain.  It so easy to be discouraged when I place too much emphasis on me (what I have to do, didn't do, what I probably should be doing but not doing b/c I don't know that's what I should be doing!) reminds me of a great quote, "for every one look at yourself you should take ten looks at Christ."
    ____________________________________________________________________________________
    Notes on Obedience:

"Obedience is the willing submission of one person to the authority of another.  It means more than a child doing what he is told.  It means doing what he is told-

    Without Challenge
    Without Excuse
    Without Delay

It is easy to think unclearly about obedience.  When you say to your child, "Dear, I want you to go to bed now," there is only one appropriate response.  It is not, "I'll go after I finish coloring this page."  It is not, "why do I always have to go to bed so early?"  It is not to ignore you entirely.

There is only one obedient response.  It is to go to bed w/out delay.  If you accept any other response, you are training your children to disobey."

-Ted Tripp, Shepherding Your Child's Heart, p.g 134

  • Good price for Pampers...

I bought 3 packs of Pampers (40ct-Size 3)... that 120 diapers for 11 cents a diaper!  Even good quality imitation diapers like Luvs cost 17 cents/diaper!  I know this is not for everyone but if this floats your boat, this is how to save a few bones.

1st Pampers pack cost me: $0.72
2nd Pampers pack cost me: $6.23 (this total included a huge bottle of Powerade + Reeces PB Cup & tax)
3rd Pampers pack cost me: $6.66 (this total included a bag of Chex mix & tax)

*This is not for everyone. I am walking distance to a CVS so it's easy for me to make a few quick runs.

See this google doc to see how got this deal: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pX4UeClLkVrXBzXKXUHw9Rg&hl=en

    2) Do transaction #4 on my google doc.

  • 1 year old Caden-Waden

     july 027

    july 025

    july 014    july 013

You know the expression "Snips, Snails and Puppy-dog tails"?  That's Caden.  His favorite part of his puppy is his puppy dog's tail... it's always wet.  If you hand him his dog, it won't be long before he flips him over to find his tail and begins to sucks (either his right or left hand's) middle & ring fingers.  It's sooo cute.  The pictures aren't clear but it was too rare to capture these moments that I couldn't part with them!  (Madlen if you are reading this, this is the "bear" you gave to Ky but Caden has adopted this as his dog .)

    july 007

Caden is currently taking steps but not walking (unassisted).  He'll take 2 maybe 3 steps b/w Jon and me but he primarily likes to dive from one person to the other (whether we are ready to catch him or not- he's crazy!)

He has a total of 7 teeth (1 of the 7 has been "coming out" for a long time now... maybe it's just a really short tooth?)  His toofies have grown in real wierd- most likely due to his finger sucking.

Even though he has only half the number of teeth as his big brother he probably eats triple the amount!  Our grocery spending has definitely increased once this boy was weaned!

ECBs= Extra Care Bucks.  Each week & month there are varying products that you can buy where you will earn Extra Care Bucks... these can be used like cash at any CVS store.  When you get good at "CVSing" you should spend less and less out of pocket (OOP) supposedly and rely primarily on your earned ECBs.

The "coupons" that I mention below are those that I've clipped via my Sunday Washington Post OR online.

  • A recommendation...

    1-800-GOOG-411
If you haven't used it before I suggest giving it a try.   If you ever find yourself in this predicament  consider using this totally FREE service made by the Google people:

    a) You don't have access to the internet (i.e. you're on vacation and want to find out what time the Banana Republic Outlet in Dover, DE closes)

    b) You're on the car and you don't have a 3rd arm to steer while you hold your cell phone and write a phone # down

    b) You have the internet but you just don't want to fool with surfing the web for contact info

    c) You don't enjoy flipping through thousands of pages of contact info the size of a grain of sand (phone book/whitepages)

When using GOOG-411 you don't even need a pen & paper b/c they will connect you directly to that business automatically (free of course) but you can also select an option that'll give you the business # for future reference.  Cool .

  • Creek (End of May)

Random picture that was too cute not to post.  Thanks for the donuts & hats Hemi!

Our visit to Homestead Farms.  Great place to pick your own fruit and visit farm animals.  Our strawberries had a pretty good shelf life.

We found this creek on our way to the Farm... it caught our eye on the side of the road.  We came back to it the next day or so for a picnic & some wading.  It's a simple little place but just conjures up childhood memories of exploring creeks, making bridges and throwing rocks .

The creek is located by this old mill house.

  • Ky's 3rd Birthday Party (sshhh... pretend it's still April)

Ky had a blast at his 3rd birthday in April.

We handed out invitations that were in the shape of a big circle 3 and ribbon to hang on each invitee's door knob.  The big circle 3's were the theme of the party.

It was a beautiful day, a tad on the hot side for April but praise God no rain so we were able to blow bubbles outside.  It was so fun watching all the kids running around trying to pop the bubbles.  I think the dad had fun too.

We ate carrot cake muffins with crazy colored cream cheese frosting.  Ky did a great job blowing out the candles.  This is the first year that he actually understood what was happening and didn't need any assistance blowing out his candles!

It's June and Ky is STILL talking about his 3rd birthday party, it made a deep impression in his mind.  Thank you all for making a special day for our boy.

Thanks Steve & Peter for the beautiful photos!

Many more posts to come (or if not consider this sentence the update ): Strawberry picking, the creek, beach w/the DeCals, some fun Ky quotes & updates....

  • Honey Lemon Tea (infused with garlic)

Castro Clan posted this recipe a while ago.  I snubbed it at first (the idea of putting lots of garlic in a drink just wasn't appealing) but after a long winter of sicknesses I caved and gave it a try and now I'm a believer.  I'll be making this again this weekend (this'll be my 3rd or 4th time) as Ky and Caden are coming down with a cold (Caden will get it w/out honey).  I figure even if this is all in my mind than what's the big deal, we can all use some extra garlic in our diet .)

B.T.W... the recipe sounds nasty but you'd be surprised... the lemon cancels out the taste of the garlic (just like it does for your hands) and the honey is key... i put enough honey to drown out the tartness  from the lemon.

Garlic lemon tea (makes 1 serving, but doubles and triples easily)

    2 cups water
    8 cloves garlic
    juice from 1 lemon
    honey, to taste

Crush garlic in a pot and add water. Simmer for 20 minutes. Strain out the garlic and add lemon juice and honey to desired sweetness (probably a little more than you would usually take).

Note: Watch the water as it gets ready to boil. If you are not careful, it will easily boil all over.

    Potty Training Update- Day 1-3

This maybe a little graphic and have TMI.  I am recording the details primarily for my future reference.

    Day 1 (Sunday)
Jon did all the training and cleaning to give me a break.  Ky didn't mind at all being naked all day, acted like nothing had changed.  I observed and braced myself for Monday.

    Day 2 (Monday)
I didn't sleep well (kept thinking about potty training and dreading it.)  I woke up lacking joy but God gave me strength and courage as I communed with Him.  This is what he showed me.

    I have opportunities today to:

    1)     Teach Ky humility.  God doesn’t need to learn anything.  He made our body.  You need his help to go pee-pee and poo-poo in the potty.  Left on your own you will be frustrated.

    2)     To depend on God for patience and cheerfulness throughout the process and learn that HE is sufficient.  I am not able to help Ky do even this simple thing w/out sinning but b/c of Jesus I am forgiven and can run to Him for help.

    3)     Make memories with Ky and have special one-on-one time with him in the bathroom.

    4)     Be like Jesus.  He washed his disciples stinky feet before he was to crucified.  He came to serve by giving His life away.  In light of that… shouldn’t be a biggie to have to clean up Ky’s accidents.  Life is not about ease.  God has set me free to serve.

    5)     I have opportunities to laugh.  It will only be a short season that Caden is so in love with my presence.  He won’t always wail because there is a gate separating him from all the busyness in the bathroom.  I should enjoy his babyishness. Ky is in a new phase of his life… he’s on the fast track to becoming a young man.  Celebrate his victories and cheer him on.  Enjoy him while he still needs me :O(.

11:30am I had forgotten all that God showed me and was ready to "throw in the towel" and pull my hair out.  Ky had several accidents, a few pee-pees in the toilet but zero poo-poos (in the potty.)

Funny story:  After Ky pooed on the floor he said,  "mama, I did it, it came out!" and then he asked with a slightly guiltly smile, "candy?"  Haha, funny guy.  I had a mix of emotions... I was happy that it came out (that he wasn't constipated) and I thought it was cute how he asked for candy but once I glanced at the unwelcomed guest on my floor... well... you know what my answer was .

    I learned 4 things from today's experience:

    1)  I am very self-sufficient.  When the going gets tough my natural inclination is to clench my jaw, dig my heels in and put up my fists and I then FAIL, FAIL, FAIL.  Doing #2 is hard... haha... get it?  Not the #2 that Ky's trying to do but the #2 that I'm trying to do (Depend on God for patience and cheerfulness.)

    2) Ky isn't the only one getting trained.  I am learning too.  We are in this together.

3)That when Ky initiates to sit on the potty and once he sits down on the potty says, "okay all done" to strongly encourage him to stay on there longer.  Sometime his pee doesn't come immediately and requires being waited on.  Just b/c he's had a few successes (telling me he has to pee) doesn't mean I can ease up on the monitoring and trust him to tell me everytime he still needs my help to understand his body.

    4) Turn off the computer, don't do ANY housework and pay careful attention to Ky's mannerisms. This will help me spot outward signs of needing to pee or poo and help prevent accidents.

    5) Block off the area where he usually goes to hide to go potty

    Day 3 (Tuesday- today)
No accidents so far (maybe a few dribbles) but 4 pee-pees in the toilet and POO-POO!  I never thought I'd be so happy about witnessing poop come out of someone's body!  Here's how it happened....

We had gone to the bathroom around the clock at 10-15 minute increments.  After lunch I was certain  he would need to poop.  So while he sat on the toilet we thanked God for helping him go pee-pee and prayed that God would help him poo-poo.  After this I watched him like a
