It's an UPDATE (that isn't just quizzes)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, thanks to Vishal's incessant pestering, I'm actually going to do a real update!
I know it's been a while *meep* but I think that most of the people who would read this already know what's going on in my life... maybe I'll turn this into a mass e-mail!!!! lol I guess we'll see

I guess I'll start off with things that happened today because I feel like today was the busiest day ever.
I started off the day with philosophy (aka the 9 AM class from hell) and even though I hadn't really gotten any sleep at all I managed to stay awake through it and on top of that I actually paid attention for most of the class instead of zoning out. At the end of class we got our first quiz back and while it wasn't the best grade, it definitely wasn't the worst and I'm happy with it for now.

After philosophy, I had my sexual oppression course. Even though the name seems a bit odd it's probably my favorite class right now. My teacher is this very liberal elderly woman who seriously like fascinates me. On top of that, the subjects that we discuss in class are amazing. We started off the first week by discussing politics in general and my professor actually pointed out many things about our country that I was dissatisfied with - and even though I've always known that I don't truly like our government, I finally had a way of talking about what I dislike and why I dislike it... I guess it just felt refreshing to be politically informed and aware for once (maybe I should just start reading the newspaper?? lol, prob wouldn't be able to follow through with that no matter how hard I tried to). After the intro to the class, my teacher immediately jumped into why men are sexually oppressed by our society - I think she wanted to make us feel a little bit bad for men before she completely started to rip on them for sexually oppressing women and making us hate them. Now that we're done with the sexual oppression of men, she's moved on to the heterosexual nature of our country (and of Europe in general) and how, societally, it affects people who arer LGBT. On top of all that nifty stuff I get to read books that have fun names such as: Sex, Power and Pleasure; Sex Work; and Sexual Crises.

So then after Sexual Oppression I went back to my dorm and picked up my negatives and also picked up Jake and we went to the dark room because we had to print stuff for our photo class critique today. That was really relaxing because nobody was really in the dark room and it was just nice to be developing. I think it was really good actually for me to have had that time today because my teacher and her teaching techniques and capabilities are really frustrating me and actually just kind of pissing me off and making me wish I had tried to get out of intro to photo but having good dark room time today helped me remember why I like photography so much.
Then we went to lunch with Anna and Liz before returning to the dark room to finish our printing and go to class at 2. Class was horrible. For the three hour lab that we're supposed to spend our time developing our teacher talked for 2 1/2 hours and then made us stay and develop a print in the last 30 minutes instead of letting us leave so we could go shoot or do some other useful thing instead of printing some random useless print that was just stupid. I guess the one good thing that happened during class was that we got our 'pop quizzes' back and I got a + on it because I happen to know what a grey card is...

After that I went to my room and printed the slides for art history before heading off to that class. I really genuinely like that class because it's forcing me to focus on architecture instead of just pushing it aside in my mind as something inconsequential and unimportant in the grand scheme of art history. That class was okay I guess because we're discussing Art Nouveau architects and I actually like their work a lot! (today we talked about Gaudi and a bunch of other architects I had never heard of before and next class we're going to talk all about Frank Lloyd Wright *woot woot*). And then at the end of that class I got another test back (my first test from that class actually) and I was really really excited because I got ann 88% on it! I don't think I would be so excited about that other than the fact that the day before we took the test I was like flipping out over it because I had this major fear that I would like fail or something... I guess I just need to have a little more faith in my knowledge about art history?

So then after that I came back to my room and I talked to my Grandma Jean for 14 minutes on the phone because I was calling her to wish her a belated happy birthday... unfortunately I have to admit that I never thought I would be able to talk to my grandma on the phone that long. Sometimes it really shocks me how I don't know my grandparents well at all.

Okay... so besides classes and stuff I actually have been having a ton of fun *surprise surprise... fun at college? lol* In fact, I've been having soooo much fun that I haven't really been sleeping much at all and am really feeling the side effects a lot. It's weird because I feel like everything that happens to me is either really really good or really really horrible. It's like my life is really super contrasty right now and I don't have any middle greys. I think if I start sleeping then I might start getting my middle greys back... did that make any sense? K... cool...

Oh and friends are fun (as always) I guess I could go into detail about stuff that's been going on but mainly I guess that I could just mention that I've pretty much been hanging out with at least one person 24/7. It seems like this is actually one of the first times in a long time that I've been alone (which isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, bc it's kind of odd to not have anyone in the room with me but it's also kind of nice especially because i'm so sleepy I feel like I wouldn't be very good company right now).

Umm okay... I guess that's it
I guess I should go study for my History of Photo test that I have tomorrow and hopefully I'll actually update for real on a more regular basis instead of like just updating when I do something like go to France or take some quizzes (and on a side note, go join OkCupid.com and be my friend - littlebuck789) OkCupid is supposed to be a site where people meet other people and stuff but really it's just fun to take tons of random quizzes and see what results your friends had for those quizzes.

Peace. You are in Limbo, a place of sorrow without torment. You encounter a seven-walled castle, and within those walls you find rolling fresh meadows illuminated by the light of reason, whereabout many shades dwell. These are the virtuous pagans, the great philosophers and authors, unbaptised children, and others unfit to enter the kingdom of heaven. You share company with Caesar, Homer, Virgil, Socrates, and Aristotle. There is no punishment here, and the atmosphere is peaceful, yet sad.

LOL sweet

Take the Dante's Inferno Hell Test http://www.4degreez.com/misc/dante-inferno-test.mv

Tuesday, October 04, 2005
Your power is: Extreme healing powers

Explanation: When injured your body focuses on the wound and heals rapidly, within a few seconds. This makes you pretty much hard to kill and you can help people in danger using yourself as a shield. Almost anything is possible in combat but you prefer looking after others. In bad purposes you can do the same as above but for evil intentions.
This power fits you pretty good since you want to help those around you, and when you are pretty much unstopable, that's not an obsticle. You are caring and nurturing and are more a pascifist. Even if you know there are much unfairness in the world you still chose to see from a positive angle because you belive in the good of this world. You are probably friendly and have a soft spot for people who are not accepted. Though to others you come of as naive and gullible. You could be taken advantagde of if the wrong person comes around. Anyway, tons has been going on. I graduated on the 21st of June, then on the 24th, I went with the fam to France for a bit. France was definitely AMAZING!!! We started off in Paris on the 25th. Dad and I got to the hotel around 10 AM and mom and Alysha got there around 11/12 (we rode on separate flights because we used frequent flyer miles). So we ended up sleeping until like 2 or 3 when we went out and just walked all the way down the Champs Elysee to L'ile de France (our hotel was right near the Arc de Triomph). So basically, we got to walk by everything that we would be going to over the next couple of days. On the second day, we ended up spending TONS of time in the Musee D'Orsay - great museum with a lot of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist stuff along with some random French stuff... there was a whole section with like antique French furniture - kind of weird, no? Then we were planning on going to St. Chapelle and we got there at 5:28 and they close the doors at 5:30 but the guard's watch said 5:30 so nobody around him could convince him that it was 5:28 lol. So then we ended up going to Notre Dame iinstead. It was so weird, because no matter what we looked at at Notre Dame I couldn't figure out why it didn't feel like the famous Notre Dame!! But then later I realized that we hadn't seen the back yet, and that's what everyone recognizes and it's what the whole thing is famous for (duh)!!!! So yeah, we didn't see the back on that day, but we ended up going back to it later. After we saw Notre Dame, we walked over to the Centre George Pompidou - which you can seriously see from Notre Dame, it's so cool. We ended up spending like an hour and a half just in the book store because it had so many books!! They had 5 whole shelves/table things just on photo!! Anyway, it was cool. We also went up to the museum part on the top floor, but by the time we got there, we only had 15 minutes before the center closed down. So then we ate dinner and had to leave in a little bit of a rush because we wanted to go up to the top of L'Arc de Triomph at night - but of course, we missed it by like 1/2 hour. So we just stood at the base of the Arch and took fun pictures - it was really neat to see the Eiffel Tower have like spazzy lights.

So then on the 27th, we went to the Louvre and spent sooo much time there! We spent like 7 hours or something there - it was great! It was funny though because when we got to the Louvre, Leash and I planned out the things that we wanted to see so that we would get to see all of them and not be completely distracted on like 1 floor for the whole day. I would list the 9 things that we determined that we absolutely HAD to see, but they're all pretty obvious ones that everyone would want to see. Oh I also had a bit of an 'epiphany' in the Louvre that day that I wrote down in my notebook *woo* so here it is: I realized today that much of the art and architecture that I love has a subject that I gravitate towards as a photographer. Most of the paintings that I photographed today have interesting shifts/blends of color or have gorgeous clouds/sunrises/sunsets. I would post some of the photos that I took in the Louvre, but 1st - I don't know how to and 2nd - all of my pre-Strasbourg photos are on Alysha's computer because she had it with her for her summer study abroad in Florence (she left to go to that on the same day that we left Marseille to go to Strasbourg). After the Louvre, we went to La Tour Eiffel. On the way there, we found a residential area and went into a grocery store just for the hell of it. Once at the Eiffel Tower, it was interesting to go up - it really is high! One thing I discovered on this adventure is just how afraid of heights my mom is. I felt bad because I never really realized that she was afraid of heights just because she hid it so well and I was the one who actually convinced her to go up lol. I think it was good for her though because that's probably something that she'll never have the chance to do again and I pretty much held her hand the whole time. One bad thing that day though was that some guy tried to pickpocket mom on the way home. We took the metro and when we switched from one metro to the next, a guy followed us (from our first train - I know because I had seen him and thought he looked sketchy) and tried to pickpocket mom. He wasn't very good though because he basically picked up mom's purse - I guess thinking that she wouldn't notice - and then mom took whatever he was holding - which turned out to be a map of his - and she hit it with him a couple times (she told us later that she realized the paper wasn't doing anything so she said she hit him with her hand, but I don't think Leash or I really believed that). Then dad chased him up the stairs (he had tried to take her purse while she was on the stairs) and he was so mad we all thought he was gonna kill the guy. Dad told me like a week later - I think it might have even been on the plane home - that he had told the guy not to fuck with mom again and the guy apparently went to spit at dad but was too scared (??) and just spit at the wall lol. So yeah, after that we made mom put her purse over her head and not just over her shoulder so that it would be in front of her and not behind, and we're also had mom walk in front of us instead of letting her lag behind like she usually does. In other news, I also wrote in my notebook that on that day I started to think partially in French instead of just thinking in Russian - so that when I would talk to Alysha in French, I would say some words in French and others in Russian and she would just kind of give me funny looks because I didn't realize it made no sense.

OKAY... really really long entry so far, so I'm gonna start cutting miniscule details out - I promise!! lol

On the 28th, we went to the Rodin Museum in the morning - really pretty gardens (and sculptures of course). There was this one that was really intriguing - I was actually shocked that it's not one of his famous ones because it's truly gorgeous, but at the same time it's a little provocative, so I guess that's why it isn't publicized too much?? That piece is apparently called Idole Eternelle (I just looked it up on Google lol). Now that I've looked up pictures of Rodin's work though, I realize that I was really intrigued by a lot of his work that I had never seen before. For example, he has two sculpted hands that are just coming out of a block of whatever medium he used and they're just really perfect and they just look like they belong in the positions that they're in - I dunno, it's hard to describe it. So anyway, after the Rodin Museum, we caught a train to Marseille - a city in the south of France. Pretty much all we had time to do once we got to Marseille was go to dinner and decide what we would do the next day (the only day we were in Marseille really). Instead of staying in Marseille, we decided to take a day trip over to Arles - this teensy little town that we seriously could have seen in like 1/2 hour had we wanted to - it was sooooo little!!! So yeah, instead of doing that, we shopped for like freakin forever!! There were so many open stores on the roads that we just kept stopping at like every one! In one that seemed to be almost like a kitchen supplies shop, we saw Absinthe! lol. Leash and I wanted to get some, but we decided that we would have wanted to take it home, and we could have gotten in serious trouble for that if they had found it in the airport or anything. (random tangent: I just want to let everyone who knows that I basically hate alcohol that I tried wine every day at lunch and every night and dinner and I still don't like it even though I tried to lol) At some point during the day, we headed over to the Amphitheater to see a bull chase thing! It was really funny and it was fun to take photos (and movies) of! I felt like such a dork cause it felt nice to be able to take 'sport' photos again since we didn't have too many chances to do that for the Yearbook this year lol... SUCH a nerd!! So yeah, after the bull chase/fight thing was over, we went back to Marseille for dinner (I think... but now that I think about it, I really don't remember what we did after the bull fight). Anyway, we got back to our hotel somehow... lol Yeah, we def didn't eat dinner in Arles, but I seriously could not tell you what we did after we got on the train to head back to Marseille... kind of weird - oh well.

So the next day (I'm up to the 30th of June, btw) we took a train to Strasbourg - this town that has been in posession of Germany and France on and off for the past like billion years!! lol. Once we were at our hotel, we decided to go to the City Center, but first we had some serious issues with the Tram, and then it started to rain and that day I had decided to wear my white graduation dress, so we basically ran back to our hotel and just ate there - kind of sounds sucky since we were in France but it was like a really upscale restaurant and it was actually the first meal - other than breakfasts - that we had had inside. Plus, the bar at the hotel had daquiris and I got to try one!! (that was like my one alcohol goal for France because I know that I already like virgin daquiris lol). It was funny because it obviously wasn't blended and it wasn't a strawberry one either - which is the kind I know I like. But, I ended up liking it a lot and drank like half of it lol. And mom was so worried that I would be tipsy so she made me walk in a straight line and made me touch my nose and everything, but I ended up being just fine - kind of weird because mom and Alysha both have major alcohol intake issues and we assumed that I would be the same. So yeah - the daquiri was definitely the best thing of the day!!! lol

So on the first of July, we rented a car from the airport and drove up the wine route all the way to a castle! The castle was really fun to take pictures of just because, you know, it's a castle!! Then on the way back we drove along the wine route again and we tried lots of wines - I tried Reisling, Topak, Pinot Gris, and some other type that sounded really German. Then we went to a wine cave that seriously smelled so strongly of wine that I thought I was gonna puke lol. There we bought a bunch of tasting glasses as gifts for people cause they were inexpensive and had the name of the wine cave and all. Dad also bought a bottle of Soverny which I thought he bought to take home with us but we ended up drinking it later on in the trip. Then we just kind of slowly made our way back to Strasbourg. Btw - mom's ancestors are from that area, so we ended up stopping at two grave sites that we passed so that she could go in and look for Bettwy grave stones lol, silly mom. We ended up not finding any, and we wanted to try to take a phone book home, but we never found a phone book either. So yeah, that was our fun day in Strasbourg.

On the second, we went to the Cathedral in Strasbourg in the morning - it had a gorgeous Astronomical clock and it was just sort of different from most Cathedrals because it had stars and moons and shit all over the ceilings - it was a nice change lol. So then we went to the Musee des Beax Arts of Strasbourg and afterwards, we got on a train to go back to Paris for our last day. About an hour away from Paris, our train actually had to stop for like 3 hours - such a pain in the ass - because a train ahead of us had hit a car and hence, all trains were backed up. It was sad because two people were injured, but I don't think anyone was killed. The whole three hours, this lady that sat next to me was talking to us in French really fast and none of us really understood but it was funny to try to listen. Also, there was this adorable little boy across the aisle that was traveling with his dad. (sorry, I know I said I would cut back on little details but this was seriously the cutest little boy ever so I have to elaborate...) At one point when the conductor announced that we would be leaving soon the little boy was quiet for a minute but then all of a sudden - about the time I started to focus on my book again - he made this crazy noise and put his arm up to his nose like an elephant's trunk!! It was so funny... But yeah, he and his dad were also playing rock paper scissors at one point. It was def interesting to see that French people play rock paper scissors, but I don't think they were saying 'rock, paper, scissors' and they were also doing something different with their hands - I don't remember what it was exactly, but it was definitely interesting to see that they did that. Oh! just one more thing about this little kid - I promise!!! Mom and dad decided to play cards at one point and they were using our Salty Dog Cafe cards, and the little boy slowly moved closer to our table so he was right up against it and like tilted his head so that he could read the title on the cards that were in a stack on the table - it was hilarious! So then I tried to talk to him to ask him if he wanted to play, but that just kind of scared him away - i don't really think he understood either lol. OKAY... moving on now

The 3rd of July was our last day in France, but we def had fun! We had intended to go to Giverny to see Monet's gardens and then take a train to Chartres to see the Cathedral, but we ended up going to Monet's gardens and then missed our train that would take us to Chartres - the next train we could get wouldn't get us to Chartres until like 7 PM... So, we ended up having 2 hours to just chill in Vernon by our train station. We ended up eating in a Turkish restaurant - weird for France, no? (it was also so much like Greek food, it was like deja vu of last year lol) So yeah, after we got back to Paris, we decided to rush over to St. Chapelle for a second try after missing it the week before, but we ended up missing it again because they were having a concert or something and were closing early. It was kind of a bummer, but after seeing other cathedrals and after having gone to a huge castle, St. Chapelle seemed teensy. We then went to the back of Notre Dame *woot* and we went to the Ile de St. Louis because they apparently have their own type of ice cream and the guy that dad had sat next to on the plane had told daddy that we had to go try it - so we did lol. I think I can say that it was the best ice cream I've ever had lol. So yeah, we then took the metro over to L'Arc de Triomph to try to go up that another time and it was so worth it! Mom was okay about going up until she got about half way up the stairs - I think it would have been a lot easier for her if there had been an elevator or something lol. But she eventually walked to the edge of the Arch and that was just another good 'conquering your fears' thing for her. I think it also helped to be able to show her the Eiffel Tower and tell her that what we were on was nothing in comparison to that lol.

So yeah, that was my France trip! We got back around 4-ish on the 4th, and I of course went over to Allie's for fireworks and to celebrate her birthday Then all I did on the 5th was laundry and un-packing/re-packing because I had insanely chosen to schedule Ithaca Orientation from the 6th to the 8th. So yeah, that was awesome! I got to meet some really cool people and I also got to hear more about what I would be doing in school and I also got to schedule classes! My classes are: Intro to Film Aesthetics and Analysis, Cinema Production 1, Intro to Sociology, Intro to Developmental Psychology, and a Seminar all about Senses which I'm excited about. Also, I ended up doing really well in the Math Placement test even though I haven't done math in a year and I also placed out of a semester of writing. If I get a 4 or 5 on my English AP then I place out of two semesters which would be really nice. Oh and also, my 4 on APAH got me out of two whole semesters of art history - I think they're just intro to Western Art 1 and 2.

So after I got home on Friday, I ended up basically just heading over to my aunt's house because she needed someone to take care of her animals because her and Tony were going to Florida to look at houses - they ended up getting the one they wanted which is so cool! I'm so excited for them!!! So yeah, mom didn't like that too much though because we had just been at Orientation (which made her realized that I actually am going to college...) and then I basically stayed alone in Gwen's house for two days even though I did come home during the day. It was so bad that when I came home on the first day she like latched onto me for a good two minutes.

So yeah, that pretty much gets me to where I am today - oh! dad and I went out on Saturday evening to the Apple store so that we could get my Powerbook. It's really awesome so far but there are some things about it that are different from Windows computers and I'm still getting used to that. Also while we were there, we got my iPod (graduation gift) and get a lot of money back for that with the mail-in rebate for my computer because I'm a student. Also, they had a special deal on printers so that whenever you buy a MAC, you get $100 rebate on printers, so we got a printer/scanner/copier for only $23! *yay for having good timing lol*

Another thing that I've been doing the past two days is I've started working for dad. He just closed a deal and he needs to make copies of all of the files for like 10 people so instead of doing that manually, he's having me fax all of the files to him, and then I put them in a folder and label them on his computer. The only thing is that I need his computer, and I need to office fax machine- both of which I can really only use after 7 or later. So I've only put in 6 hours so far, but it's a nice little intro to any other work I might do for him over the next month or so.

So yeah, if you read through this whole thing - kudos to you! If not, I don't blame you! lol
In the future I will definitely try to update a little more often just so that I don't end up with novel-length updates

Wednesday, June 15, 2005
