I will play, smile, and stare transfixed at the rain. I will sing, laugh, and make up stories. I will draw, break my crayons, and not care that they are broken. I will walk on stone walls and dig in the dirt. I will not wrinkle up like a prune: I will be the ripe plum I am perfectly capable of becoming. ~Eric Maisel

Real, natural learning is in the living. It's in the observing, the questioning, the examining, the pondering, the analyzing, the watching, the reading, the DO-ing, the living, the breathing, the loving, the JOY. It's in the joy. ~anne ohman

The idea of Unschooling is for parents to be the facilitators of options, the openers of doors, the creators of environments of freedom, and the guardians of choice, not the installers of roadblocks and barriers. Unschoolers are making the huge and wonderful choice to renounce our legal entitlements to be the authoritarian controllers of our children's lives, and instead choose to be their partners. ~robyn coburn

Unschooling parents who have spent years giving their children freedom and choices have learned that limitations create need while freedom creates intelligent choices.  ~sandra dodd

I don't manage my children's time, I enjoy it with them. There is a wonderful place that isn't about controlling, nor is about ignoring. It is a connected place, a place of trust and respect. It's where unschooling blossoms.

YEAR END EVALUATION

It's been awhile since the end of school, not that is matters to us , but I know some homeschoolers are still putting together their year end evaluations for their school district.

I'm happy we don't have to do that in our town, especially since we unschool. I *could* produce an evaluation if I had to, it would just take quite awhile to put together, since our learning isn't confined to a curriculum.

I was giving some thought to this past year and my kids accomplishments. And they have little do do with math facts and figures in history and more to do with life itself.

-They have learned to appreciate differences among people.

-They have learned to care for other living beings and why we give good care and what happens if we don't.

-They have learned to become more independent and can care for themselves, if they had to do it all, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.

-They have learn to appreciate all of nature and protect it and know we are all connected.

-They have learned to question, almost everything, and realize everyone has a different take on the world , but it's their opinion, not fact.

-They have realized they have a love of learning, of all kinds, and have noticed it has disappeared from some of their schooled friends lives and they feel sad.

-They have learned to voice their opinions among others more.

-They have learned that they don't want to be around people who are disrespectful, including kids and adults.

-They have learned they have a choice about everything and can make up their own minds.

-They have learned to stand fast in their decisions and not be swayed by others.

-They have seen what it is like to have no choices and be told what to do constantly, and disagree with it.

-They have learned that they can gain knowledge about anything they want, and when they want.

-They know where to go to find the information they want, or to ask for help when they need it.

-They have learned the value of money and how to make do in lean times.

-They have learned the value of family, the young and the old and appreciate the closeness they have.

-They have realized that it's not money and things that make a life rich.

-They have learned that following your passions make for a very happy and joyful life.

Life has been an *on-going* learning experience for them, Each year they are more confident and more adept at being who they are .

Unfortunately, all that wouldn't be adequate for a year end evaluation. The school dept would want to know more about math capabilities, reading level, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, history and science topics, you know, all the *important* stuff  <<G>>>

LEARN NOTHING, HUH???

Today is the day !

The 1st Annual International Learn Nothing Day for unschoolers , a vacation from LEARNING <<G>>

It's kind of a joke really, because let's face it, there is NOT a day that goes by that one doesn't LEARN.

All parts of our life are connected. We move, we breathe and we learn. It's that simple :)

I like this *holiday*, even though it's impossible not to learn.

Perhaps it will bring AWARENESS to others who don't realize that learning takes place in ALL that we do and not just from *academics*.

Great idea Sandra!

CAT OR BIRD ?

Have you ever heard the call of a GRAY CATBIRD ?

LISTEN!

Chloe took a video. Two Catbirds are *talking* to one another  :)

Scroll way down to the bottom of the page, turning OFF the music on my playlist first! ( Playlist is right above video).

MY HEART SINGS

That is the way I can descibe the feeling I had when I rounded the corner into the great room and came upon Kelsey and Chloe CREATING!

Some would consider it a mess . . . but not ME!  My heart sang at the sight of it all. I gasped with delight :)
