YEAR END EVALUATIONIt's been awhile since the end of school, not that is matters to us , but I know some homeschoolers are still putting together their year end evaluations for their school district. I'm happy we don't have to do that in our town, especially since we unschool. I *could* produce an evaluation if I had to, it would just take quite awhile to put together, since our learning isn't confined to a curriculum. I was giving some thought to this past year and my kids accomplishments. And they have little do do with math facts and figures in history and more to do with life itself. -They have learned to appreciate differences among people. -They have learned to care for other living beings and why we give good care and what happens if we don't. -They have learned to become more independent and can care for themselves, if they had to do it all, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. -They have learn to appreciate all of nature and protect it and know we are all connected. -They have learned to question, almost everything, and realize everyone has a different take on the world , but it's their opinion, not fact. -They have realized they have a love of learning, of all kinds, and have noticed it has disappeared from some of their schooled friends lives and they feel sad. -They have learned to voice their opinions among others more. -They have learned that they don't want to be around people who are disrespectful, including kids and adults. -They have learned they have a choice about everything and can make up their own minds. -They have learned to stand fast in their decisions and not be swayed by others. -They have seen what it is like to have no choices and be told what to do constantly, and disagree with it. -They have learned that they can gain knowledge about anything they want, and when they want. -They know where to go to find the information they want, or to ask for help when they need it. -They have learned the value of money and how to make do in lean times. -They have learned the value of family, the young and the old and appreciate the closeness they have. -They have realized that it's not money and things that make a life rich. -They have learned that following your passions make for a very happy and joyful life. Life has been an *on-going* learning experience for them, Each year they are more confident and more adept at being who they are . Unfortunately, all that wouldn't be adequate for a year end evaluation. The school dept would want to know more about math capabilities, reading level, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, history and science topics, you know, all the *important* stuff <<G>>> |
