In memoriam Dr. Gruenke and Dr. Smith

"And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father's house - for I have five brothers - in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' But he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!' But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'"
--Luke 16:27-31

[P.S. I humbly ask everyone not to use this set of resignations as an opportunity to ridicule the college or people with whom you disagree. One of the marks of a fool in the Proverbs is sloth. Such a vice is reflected not only physically but intellectually as well. It is easy to snipe from a distance, unseen. It is easy to whine about problems which everyone already recognizes. It is easy to attach ideals of justice to a new cause. But it is difficult - very difficult - to see tough situations as an opportunity to reform your own life. Apparent action speaks a great deal louder than anonymous words; the day is carried by men who would hold to the truth no matter the response of their social group, and not by sheep who feel uncomfortable conversing with the other camp's rubes.]

The P.S. is good. (So is the Scripture.) Thanks. I'm trying.

Mmm.

Troubling events.  But I am encouarged by the dignity and grace with which this set of resignations was carried out.  Far less traumatic for swollen and tender campus scars.

I don't know the two professors whom you referenced in the post, but I did find a verse about Mr. Mike Farris:

And that great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, who seduceth the whole world; and he was cast unto the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. - Apocalypse XII:ix

Mysterium Fidei: I'm not sure I can do this humbly, but I think it ought to be said. Dr. Farris (who is Dr., and not Mr.; let us call all by their proper names) has managed to irritate pretty much everyone who knows him, including me, but he is yet an incarnation of God's grace; a sinner loved by Him who loved us. The fact that God used him (and He has, and is; and knowing Him, will continue to do so) should cause us to wonder and worship, not to snipe Dr. F. to pieces, and to pray devoutly that He does not let us do worse in such a situation. I'm certainly not holier or braver than he is.

He has done great things and terrible things both, but he is a fellow believer, and it is inappropriate for you to compare him to Satan. The Enemy loves it when you demonize Dr. Farris; please, oh please don't!

I'm glad I got to be on-campus for Dr. Gruenke and Dr. Smith's resignations. The school will be poorer for them, and I grieve their going; I had them both the first semester they taught there. I cried when I heard they were leaving. But the future of PHC is not dependent on them alone, nor even on Dr. F. One thing I know, if God wants the school to last, no one on earth can make it totter. And that is a hopeful thought.

pinoncoffee, I welcome your correction regarding my comparison of Mr. Mike Farris (I don't call people doctors who haven't contributed anything in their fields and have only received bogus degrees for sufficient amounts of brown-nosing) and in the future I will refrain from calling to mind his many similarities with the Prince of Darkness, Be'elzebub, Mephistophiles, or even more apropos comparisons to the likes of Vladimir Ţepeş or Rasputin.

I think the school is doomed to die a slow and painful death due to its wilful suppression of truth and its propagation of numerous heresies. The school may indeed continue for some time but that does not mean that it is an institution that honours God.

Mysterium Fidei:

:::grin:: You share this in common with Dr. Farris: you have no compunction about letting your opinions be known. Gotta disagree with you heartily, but it's a pleasure to disagree with someone with a position.
