Best of 2006

WARNING: THIS WILL BE VERY LONG, BUT I DO ADVISE EVERYONE TO AT LEAST READ AND VOTE ON THE BOTTOM PARAGRAPH.  THANK YOU!!!

here it is, the long-awaited Best Ofs, offs? uvs?  anyway, you get the idea...and remember, these are MY choices.  if i wanted you to argue with what "the best" really is, then i would've called it "the argue with my choices list," but that's a really clumsy title.  oh, yeah, here we go...

MUSIC (for songs/albums released between Oct. 1, 2005 and Sept. 31, 2006)

Best Album: Flyleaf by Flyleaf (edgy, controversial, deep, heartbreaking, joyful...it pretty much covered everything this year)
Best Compilation: The Face of Love by Sanctus Real (an album that flows almost perfectly song-to-song as a musical demonstration of the Christian walk)
Best Song: "There For You" by Flyleaf (poetic, beautiful, lingers in your head long after it's over)
Best Love Song: "Luv Addict" by Family Force 5 (so much fun to listen to, how could i say no?)
Best Anti-Love Song: "Me Voy" by Julieta Venegas (the music and vocals are so upbeat, you almost forget it's about a break-up...especially if you don't know Spanish...)
Best Radio Song: "Over My Head" by The Fray (need i say more?)
Best Worship Song: "I Am Free [live]" by The Newsboys (hey, i had to fit them in there somehow!)
Best Vocalist: Matisyahu (hey, YOU try to sing Reggae and then maybe we'll discuss it later.)
Best Live Show: Becoming The Archetype (they only performed, like, 4 songs, but it was, by far, my favorite show of the year)

MOVIES (since i haven't seen everything i want to yet, these may change later on...)

Best Picture: The Departed (so so so so so so so so so good)
Best Director: Martin Scorcese for The Departed (see above...)
Best Actor: Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland (a very complex and scary role on top of a perfect African accent)
Best Actress: for now, Toni Collette for Little Miss Sunshine, but this choice will probably change
Best Supporting Actor: it's a tie for me between Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine and James McAvoy for The Last King of Scotland
Best Supporting Actress: Rinko Kikuchi for Babel (absolutely amazing as a rebellious deaf Japanese girl.)

LIFE

Best Trip: The New Mexico WWII adventure
Best Quote: "on my honeymoon night, i'm going to only wear a red cape and THREE tube socks.  guess where the third one will be?  a sock puppet." -Jon Ladner
Favorite Book: The DaVinci Code (yeah, yeah, yeah, forget the "controversy"--it's entertaining and a page-turner, end of story.)
Least Favorite Book: Orality and Literacy (the title alone should give you shivers...)
Best Encourager: JD Neinast, for pushing me in my walk with Christ, asking hard questions, and always having a kind word/hug/obscene text message just when i needed it.
Best New Obsession: LOST...thanks to Amy and Michelle and Stephanie and i could go on about all you freaks...
Weirdest Moment: Mandy Morrisson knowing who i was BY NAME the first time i met her at Global Night Commute.  but i am glad i met you, Mandy!
Most Bizarre Moment: realizing that i'm related to the Polly family at the Village.  whoa.
Biggest Spiritual Victory: making huge, huge, HUGE strides in my battle against depression.  yay, Jesus!!!
Biggest School Victory:  this is a toss-up between "passing Linguistics" and "making a B in advertising."  you decide.
Dumbest Thing: washing my iPod with my clothes...drying it didn't really help too much either...
Best Personal Injury: rolling over my foot at work with a heavy cart, thus injuring myself...twice.  at least it was a different foot each time...
Best Poet: Chaz Underriner...he rocks.  his poetry makes ME want to fall in love with him.  but i won't.  i promise.
Best Sermon: probably Ecclesiastes 3...but i MIGHT be a little biased...
Personal Firsts: first time to be pulled over, first time to get a ticket (these were separate pull-overs...), first time to live with someone by choice, first time to see Ferris Bueler, first time to smoke (sorry, Mom!!! and Dad!!!), first time to raise a sea otter (okay, that one's not true), first time to stay awake 48-hours straight, first time to kiss Jacob Vanhorn (and that one is true)

and now...to vote on THE BOLDEST THING I'VE DONE THIS YEAR!!!
a)accept a promotion as night manager
b)kiss Jacob Vanhorn
c)drive for 2 and a half hours with a "check engine" light on in my car just so i could make a wedding on time
d)dye my eyebrows black
e)raise a sea otter (okay, that one's really not true, i just think it's funny)
f)move in with the Butler brothers (more of an inside-joke really)
g)chase after a shirtless man covered in blood (this one is true)
h)something not in this list but that you experienced with me or know about!

oh yeah...almost forgot...

i)peed on a "do not walk on grass" sign on 100F Street just before sneaking into the graveyard at night. yes, cars passed by.

yes...it's been a good year...on to '07.  i'm ready for the adventure to continue.  may it also be blessed.

you're bolder than you give yourself credit for - i can remember couple of things you did - one not to be mentioned, but it took courage. and you helped us take on the spider webs on the camping trip, they were big and scary.

and it was a good year. i enjoyed walking with you through a-h (not i, ewww). hopefully i can toast to '07 with you!

Since I am on the list am I disqualified from voting? If my votes counts I vote for anything but 'kissing Jacob Vanhorn". For the record, it was on the cheek. And JD asked him to do it. But Jonathan was bold in his approach. I mean he went straight for it. It was a bold act.

And I heart Jonathan Jordan. I vote for committing to your call to pastoral ministry. Bold as a lion brother.
