My Life....

So, it has been a while since I updated.  I was over at my parents place over Christmas which was fun.  We had a pretty simple Christmas because my family is getting more and more serious about poverty in Africa.  Most of you know how my family is involved in clean water projects in Africa-specifically Nigeria and Rwanda.

We decided that we didn't need as much "stuff" for Christmas while most of the world suffers from the lack of basic needs like clean water and enough food.  It is awkward taking this approach because part of you agrees because you know it is right, but the other part of you is like, "man I miss getting sweet gifts!"

Along those lines, I'm reading this book that I got from Godwin called, "Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger:  Moving from Affluence to Generosity."  It is killing me.  I hate poverty.  I hate the suffering of human beings.  The problem is so complex though.  Poverty is caused by a million variables:  greed, injustice, big business, immoral politics, materialism, capitalism, socialism, centeralized power, and ultimately sin.

The whole thing is just utterly overwhelming.  The last part of the book is focused on what individual people can do about poverty and injustice in the world.  It is pretty hardcore stuff.  I have a lot of thinking to do.

God's been laying stuff on my heart about the world also. "Let the nations be Glad" piper, and while thats a different look, it's still crazy. with all that the world can do, the church can, and that i can. When i was reading in my bible yesterday specifically james 1:27 how it says the religion that God accepts is looking after orphans and widows. That struck me. The religion God accepts is serving and loving others...then i thought about the church and the world the religions we choose to follow when it says it there. serve and love and in other scripture glorify God....sorry rambles when i read that yesterday i got fired up so to see that you were reading about the world and the state at which is stands and how it made you angry also, ha just thought i'd share.

My current issue is whether or not its really ok for people to have huge houses *regardless of income/tithing, etc* if they don't really need them. There are a lot of things people say they "need", but what do we really truly need to live with. I get upset when I don't have two matching clean socks, or when I have to use a towel that was used by someone else in my family. How much less do people in other countries have, and how much more could I give if I was only willing to drop some of the things that really don't matter. I know im not in this position, but if I have to decide between building a massive house with tons of property or living in an ok house with a smaller backyard yet giving the difference to something that REALLY truly matters..... which am I going to choose? What do I as an individual really need to live off of? And once I come to that conclusion, am I willing to give the other things up?

Or...do church buildings need to be so massive, ornate, and expensive?  Good thoughts people.

yeah hes sweet and his bandmate mike hogan coauthored it w/ him

"There are moments we all cry at once. You know how sometimes in the middle of summer when rain has been scarce and the sun is hot, the ground dry and cracked, and a storm hits?  The water somes fast and in torrents, sounding its arrival with claps of thunder and cracks in the sky.  It's all too much for the soil to hold, and then suddenly, violently there is a flood.  Grief arrives with this force.  It itself is a force, coming on unstoppable, leaving no one safe from it.  Once upon a time, we almost drowned from the grief of God. "

~ pg. 12 (actually this is  quoted in the book from "buired communities" by: Kurt Fosso)

oh also i just listened to a good song on the A Colission CD called Come Awake (track 14)  very good
