  • Welcome....G'bye

This is my first year teaching Newcomer ELLs, but I am loving it!  For six of my students, last Wednesday was their first day of school in the U.S.  Yesterday was Joel's first day of school here, after attending school in Mexico for seven years.  He was so nervous and shy at first, but he warmed up and settled in by this afternoon.

How sad though.  He was placed at the wrong school!  So today was his second and last day with us.  He came back to my room and said goodbye and gave me a hug.

  • Soccer

Although I do not play sports, I am our school's new assistant soccer coach.  Since soccer is not funded by the district, we are a "club" and will play on Saturdays. We are a co-ed team, consisting of both seventh and eighth graders. We had 70 students start tryouts and 60 lasted all four days.  We announce the 30 team members tomorrow.  I officially do not believe in making cuts.  I feel horrible!  Most of these kids deserve to be on the team for one reason or another.  All they want to do is play a simple game of soccer a couple times a week and here we have to go and rip their hearts out.  I never realized how difficult it would be to make the cuts.  I am not prepared for the heartbreaks, tears, hate notes? or questions of why they did not make the team.  I am quite excited to watch the 30 team members grow, but I still feel guilty.

  • good old Renton for ya.
so i'm subbing at Renton High School for three weeks,
and today, my fifth day there, as i pulled up to school i see
five cops holding their guns out at this student who's on his stomach on the cement.
clueless me walks right into the building thinking "oh the problem's outside"
    right.
before i know it i'm pulled into a small, dark room with about 20 students because we are in LOCK DOWN.
yep. i guess they weren't sure if there was still a gun on campus or not.
finally, about an hour later an announcement came on letting us out.
    was i scared? mmm..not really. i watch a lot of 24.
but i was brought to think about what IF a gunman actually came into the room we were in.
as a TEACHER, would I put my life before these students that i barely know?  hopefully.
how about as a CHRISTIAN?  again hopefully i would make the right choice without even thinking twice.

i pray for His holy protection of all schools, everywhere
