| Meet Laocoön & Sons
Laocoön was not having a good day. We don't need to get into the whole story, which essentially boils down to a morality tale about knowing when to keep your mouth shut, but the gods had sent serpents from the sea to consume him and his two sons (named Theucididecius and Chaz, if I remember correctly).
This sculpture is in the Vatican Museum, and is thought to be one of the world's greatest portrayals of struggle and agony. Casey saw it in person. I am so jealous.
Why do I call Laocoön to your attention? Because it occurred to me today that I'm just like Laocoön ... only blind. I can't see the sin wrapping around my legs and arms and heart. And all too often I assume that because I don't see any danger, there is none.
Laocoön was killed by the serpents. By God's grace, my fate is secure, sin is broken, and Christ is victorious. But that doesn't mean sin isn't still out to strangle me.
I need to struggle like Laocoön blind.
