Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires, the Respect He Desperately Needs
By Emerson Eggerichs

Happy Respect Day!

Our newlywed couples group recently finished a study through this book. In one of our last weeks together, we got talking about the greeting card industry and how cards are so skewed to a woman's perspective - they're all about love. As "Emerson" says (we took to calling him "Emerson" because no one really knows how to pronouce his last name - this was never really discussed, probably because no one wanted to admit they couldn't pronouce his last name; it was more like a tacit agreement), while a woman's greatest need is for love, a man's greatest need is for respect.

So Peter Blasi suggested that Hallmark should create a new holiday for men: Respect Day. And they should create cards "with, like, Vikings on them and stuff."

Matthew and I thought that was hilarious. So I made this card and we sent it to Peter for Valentine's Day:

Cracks me up every time I think about it.

Joking aside, is there a man in your life to whom you should express your respect today?

(*Edit* I just read Lesley's latest post...she has some great ideas to start showing respect!)

Gotta love the furry viking.  Now you just need to name him.

A.) I love making things with cutouts. What material are his shoes?

B.) I love the blood on the axe.

C.) I should make this card for Micah - or at least show it to him. :) He will love it.

Nikki - the blood on the axe is my favorite part. I love how it says, "I have vanquished my enemies!" It's my new Revlon nail polish - "Venom." It's shiny on the card - perfect "blood"!

Oh, and the shoes are from a scrap of faux leather.

Great idea and execution (no pun intended). I think you should send your ideas to Hallmark.

I love it! You are quite talented when it comes to making cards. And I love that you used nail polish! What did Peter think of it?

ryc: It actually wasn't even Barbara's inital comment that bugged me so much, it was more what some of the others said...then Barbara responded to my first comment and it seemed like she felt maybe attacked or something, and in turn I felt attacked...not sure if that is the right choice of words....maybe judged...but anyway, some seemed to say or imply that was wrong to even ask for or think one deserved time for herself. Not scream and throw a fit if we don't get it, but I don't think it's selfish to ask for it or regularly build it into one's schedule. Then there's the PPD thing which is a whole other can of worms.... :) Otherwise the site is really good and I'm into Montessori stuff...have you seen the website www.forsmallhands.com? I love getting stuff from there for my girls.

Hi, Becky,

I found this Xanga post from the Biblical Womanhood blog (Feb 14 post):
http://www.biblicalwomanhood.com/blog.htm

I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with Respect Day when it comes to women preparing to love men on that special day. Men want to be leaders when women respect them, just as women want to be caring when men love them first.

Thanks for posting!

I just showed this to Micah and he was highly amused. He also chimed in on the whole Respect Day idea and informed me of a day on March 14th that's supposedly for men.
