| The rich man and Lazarus: Luke 16:19-31
31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.
What a dreadful state the unregenerate are in! Some may say, “If we can see Jesus then we would most certainly believe”. Some even reason to themselves and say, “ if I only experience with my eyes the miracles, signs, wonders that the holy book speaks of I too will leap with faith toward that righteous way of the Christian”. The beauty and wonder of the state that creation now experiences is that we have that most appropriate means by which we are to know of the dangers of hell and of the gracious salvation in Christ. God has so seen it fit that the stirring of the sinful heart to conviction for sin and a thirst for the blood of the redeemer come by no other means than the working of His spirit in making His word lively and active “Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ”. How foolish is the world when they fill their heads with lies and deceptions- that they would come to faith by means not appointed buy God.
It is sad for me to realize that the children of God buy into this kind of worldly deception by misplacing the Word of God in evangelism with crafty philosophical proofs of the existence of God in hope that we may reason someone into the kingdom, (I am not saying here that evidential apologetics has no place in the Christian life) I guess what I am saying is that the lost man looks for reasons to believe God buy means other than the word, and most of the time, evangelism in the American church has lost the christocentric message of, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
