Tibet--I think you should all be educated.

Let me say first off, I am not a very politically interested person. I rarely follow politics at all, in fact. But recently, I have been very very disturbed by the current political attitude regarding Tibet. I'm not speaking from the viewpoint of a biased Chinese person, but as one human observing the actions of other humans.

First of all, most of the people who are getting so riled up about "humans rights" in Tibet do not even know what the hell is going on. They watched some random skewed media report and they immediately jump to drastic conclusions. (Examples here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uSQnK5FcKas) Jessica, I am actually very surprised you signed that anti-olympic poster because you are a history lover. I would assume you would do thorough research on the history of Chinese-Tibetan relations before trusting profit-seeking media.(And I'm sorry I sound angry right now. I still love you)  I'm not going to go into details and facts because everything I want to say is in this video. It's almost 10 minutes long, but I trust that those of you who care/have a sense of justice will watch this before you make any biased opinions:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xsoc4-QnplY

I am also very angry about the talk of boycotting the Olympics in the name of human rights. The Olympics has always been a event of peace where nations come together in friendly sporting competition. It is not a political event!!! Why why why are they muddying such a peaceful event with political tribulations??

I guess...just the hypocrisy and mob mentality of the whole situation disgusts me. I don't condone any of the Chinese government's past actions. I know they have made mistakes. But at the same time, the facts about Tibet have been so very skewed. I have family friends who have personally visited Tibet. They confirm that the majority of Tibetan citizens don't even care for or want independence. It is mostly the religious elite that are so avidly pushing for segregation and not allowing anybody outside of their culture in. This is just what I know thus far. For those of you really interested, there are definitely more viewpoints out there and more arguments for both sides.

I guess what I really wanted to say was that you should listen to both sides of the story before forming an opinion. Do some research. Do not be ignorant.
And also....
Study history, not the media.

03/27/08

Uh, don't read this unless you're really really really effing bored. It's just a useless rant to release some stress and motivate me to make changes in my life. Not really applicable to you guys.

All of a sudden, I feel very stressed out. And I can't even block it out. One of the things that bothers me most about this year is not that I've been slacking (ok, that bothers me too, but not as much), but that I've been irresponsible. Once upon a time, my teachers used to write on my report cards, "Maylene is a very conscientious, responsible, and hardworking girl." I wonder what my teachers would write now. Maylene sleeps in my class 4 out of 5 days in a week. Maylene slouches in her seat. Maylene is irresponsible and tardy sometimes. Maylene is not performing as well as I expect her to.

1. I forgot to email the GAGE scholarship lady about my participation in the awards ceremony. Due date was March 21st. Ceremony is today.

2. I procrastinated on putting up NHS point sheets and chairing project sheets till very late. And I told them I'd be a responsible VP when I ran for the position.

3. I sleep in class and then ask teachers about things they obviously stressed while I was sleeping...and they know I sleep. Sometimes they complain, and I fall asleep again.

4. When given class time to do work, I almost never work. Always talk.

5. I lost my field trip permission form and had to get a new one.

6. Mrs. Huie asked me to email the Chinese Club schedule to everyone and I completely forgot and Jennifer had to end up doing that.

7. I haven't been planning anything for Chinese Club even though as president, I am responsible for it.

8. I took orders for tshirts but have procrastinated for over a week in mailing out the order. And people are getting impatient.

9. I don't even complete homework sometimes.

10. I procrastinated on my econ project until the last week. Even though my partner is a known slacker, I feel somewhat responsible that he has not completed any of the parts he needs because I never took the initiative to talk to him about our project or tell him what he needs to do. I just kind of expected him to know what to do.

11. I'm completing a lot of honor society points by bringing in stuff instead of using my time to provide service. Wtf? It's not like I'm thhhat crammed for time, especially this semester.

12. I've been late to school a couple of times and even missed out on my first day of school because I did not know school started this semester. You think its funny now. But if you look at the cause of it, it's not.

NO WONDER my parents are worried. My grades are no longer 1st caliber. My overall demeanor is sloppy. I rarely clean my room. I look and act like a slacker. I miss school (on accident) or show up late. And then I don't even act concerned about it at all. I just wave at them and tell them not to worry. How could they not??

What kills me most is when teachers I really respect give me a slightly disappointed look. I feel like my standards for myself have slid so much. I'm happy with only a 90 now. Actually, I'm happy if I merely stay awake in class. My teachers are happy if I stay awake in class and pay attention. What happened to the me that clung to every word the teacher said? I tried sitting up straight today in class and it felt really weird. I think the only last bit of organization in my life left is my planner. I write down what I need to do everyday, but only because I'll def forget if I don't. Doesn't mean I'm able to complete everything in it though. I bet a lot of teachers are even wondering how in the world I got into yale or became star student etc etc. sigh

I'm through with this rant. Time to be dependable and responsible like I once was....I was always very proud of it too. Back then. How can people trust me... how can my parents trust me...if I can't do what I say I'll do on time and with good effort?

Today is my dad's birthday. =] Yesterday, he walked past my room and goes "琳琳,你怕不怕长胖?" (Maylene, are you scared of getting fat?) Me: "Nope." Then, he chunks a Haagen-Dazs icecream bar at me and it hit me right in the face. That is why I have a little bruise on my cheek. I just thought that was funny.

03/16/98

The other day, I bit my chopstick...and the tip broke off. I think I was amused for a second or so and then probably set it down and forgot about it because when I checked the utensil drawer today, there it was--short, tip-less, jagged. Again, I found myself amused and set it down, only to forget about it once more. Now, I don't know where it is. Probably in the dishwasher again...

Ok, that was pretty pointless. I'm taking a break from my lame physics webass and figured I'd come here to waste some time. I told my mom I watched The Little Rascals on my 18th because that was a movie I liked when I was a little kiddy. She asked me why I was always looking back and why I don't look forward instead. I think I just uhhuhed her and didn't answer because I was lazy, but really, I look forward all the time. I'm always looking forward. I looked forward to turning 18 for one thing. I look forward to spring break, to prom, to graduation, to summer, and to college. Then, I'll look forward to finding a shuai ge, grad school, getting married, getting a job, having a kiddy of my own, finding world peace...you know, the usual stuff. In fact, every day I look forward to lunch and then the last bell that lets us out. It's always forward, forward, forward. That's why it's special when I have the time to look back.
I think memories are underrated.
