My Love For Giant SnakeheadsCall it infatuation or love but I’ve never been so engrossed
in a hobby I once found boring. Since coming back to Malaysia
last year I’ve spent most of my moolahs on fishing and I’ve gotta admit…It's money
well spent. After doing research on some local freshwater fishing spots, I was
intrigued by the huge Giant Snakeheads caught at a lake called Bersia in the
state of Perak. Approximately 2 hours away from Penang,
this lake was never heard of by many of my avid fishing buddies.
An area covering 300 hectares of undulating greenery beside Perak
River, Bersia
Lake is 15 km from Grik in
northern Perak. It originates from the same source /
water body of Perak river with series of Dams i.e. Temenggor, Bersia, Kenering
(aka Air Ganda) and Cenderoh (in particular order). You can also
visit an Orang Asli village, go night fishing, or go watch fish sight down
currents to spawn (August to September). One can also participate in the
feeding of cattle and their rounding up in the evening.
With the introduction part done, let me get back to the fish
I’ve been hunting ever since I found out about Bersia
Lake.
Toman @ Giant Snakehead
Being a high level predator means that the giant snakehead
eats many other fishes, and even small birds, but is not preyed upon by
many other species. The giant snakehead is considered gregarious, with the
young often following closely to their mother. There have been reports of
protective mother giant snakehead attacking men who have disturbed the
snakehead's school of juveniles.
Here are some of the Giant Snakeheads I’ve caught on my
previous trips to Bersia.
That’s hitting 8 kilos on the weighing scale
 A 9 kilo mama

An average sized mama

My personal best – 7 plus kilos
Apart from the fishing, you will be amazed with the lush forests
which surround the lake and it makes you stare in awe how beautiful certain
parts of Malaysia is.
