MacGyver

Over the past couple of months I have watched the first three seasons of MacGyver online.  In doing so I have noticed a few things:

  • They are very vague about his age, in fact the age they allude to can change a lot between episodes
  • He almost always has some hot young chick that he hooks up with
  • When he doesn't hook up with someone new, his friend Jack Dalton does
  • He has been engaged or nearly engaged at least two and I think three times
  • He is scared to death of guns but has no problems with explosions
  • He is scared to death of guns but will happily use them as an integral part of one of his contrivances
  • He is an unabashed expert in darn near everything
  • Despite being wanted in Russia and its allies they never go after him until he completes what he went in for
  • It is dangerous to be a friend or relative of one of his friends or just a friend who isn't very close
Honestly things just don't quite add up in that show and there isn't always much continuity between episodes.  I think he has burned through about 15 lives so far at least.  If I were him I would suggest finding some less dangerous friends.

Hitler

I was in an argument the last night and today with someone over on TheTheologians' photoblog.  The guy I was arguing against was trying to use Reductio ad Hitlerum as proof that I had lost the argument and he kept trying to use that argument.  I told him a few times that his argument was baseless because I had never said in that argument that Obama was evil because he is doing something that Hitler did, and in fact never in that argument stated that Obama was evil at all.  Also, Reductio ad Hitlerum according to Wikipedia (which the guy referred me too) is not even a real logical fallacy but rather a name for an association that happens and often includes the use of logical fallacies.  It also states that not every association with Hitler or Nazis fit the nature of reductio ad Hitlerum name which is what the guy said.  That guy also was arguing that I had lost the argument simply because I had mentioned Hitler and referred to some consensus that says that any mention of Hitler means that you have automatically lost the argument as proof of that fact.  Since then I have seen a few other references to that "rule" which is one that I had previously never heard of.

Frankly, to have a rule that any mention of Hitler or Nazis means you have lost an argument is a stupid rule because there are times when a comparison to Hitler is very legitimate and to eliminate that as a possible argument really just amounts to an unwarranted restriction of a person's ability to argue a point.  Granted there are many instances when invoking Hitler is unwarranted and thus is a lousy argument that is only going to help you lose an argument but not always.

The simple fact is that it is very possible to make very well supported and logical arguments that invoke Hitler or Communism.

What is your opinion of rules governing the mention of Hitler in an argument?

EDIT:  He just replied again.  He claims that he can't be ideological about anything because cited examples of fascism claims from both sides of the political spectrum which tells me that he doesn't understand much of anything about what it means to be ideological.  He also claims that I insulted Catholics by stating that the Pope is a dictator.  Which demonstrates that he doesn't understand what a dictator is, because the Pope, once chosen rules over the Vatican, which is a nation-state, until either they die or abdicate their position.  I suppose that such a truth could make someone feel insulted but if you are insulted by facts like that then you are really really thin-skinned.

I kind of wonder how someone as apparently stupid as this guy can make it through life.

Teachers

I found an article listing 7 Things to Tell the Teacher.  The premise is that the more a child's teacher knows about them the more they can play to your child's strengths and help them to do better in school.  You know that does sound like a very good idea but I doubt that it will work like some people might expect.

One is that many times a teacher will have 25-30 students in their classes and simply cannot give individual attention to every student.  Also by the same token with that many kids there are likely going to to be just as many distinct learning styles and very few teachers are going to have the patience to introduce something more than a couple of times unless the kid stays after school, thus even a good teacher is likely going to teach something once or twice in ways that play to the learning styles of the majority of the class.  Honestly to expect otherwise is rather foolish in my opinion.

Another reason why I don't believe that it would really do all that much good is that my parents did that almost every year and they usually even had a member of the schools administration or two helping them and it never really did much good.  In fact, I can count on only two hands the number of teachers (from Kindergarten all the way through high school) who ever made any effort to deal with me as I was and how I learned.  Of those, there was less than one hand's worth who did so before they learned the hard way that I could and would make their classrooms miserable places for them to be if I didn't care about the subject matter or wasn't kept involved.  I went to school in some schools that are known for their good academic performance and for having some of the better teachers around.  Also I had known two of the three teachers who chose from the beginning to work with me before I ever had them as a teacher.

I believe that if you really want your kid to get good attention and to be taught in the way that he/she learns best then you need to homeschool.

Dating Websites

Lately I have been seeing numerous signs for dating websites while I am out driving around.  These sites are a little different than eHarmony or those other large national sites.  These sites are for only small areas.  I have now seen them for three different suburb municipalities of the metropolitan area I live in as well as one subarea of the main city.

I feel it prudent to state a personal viewpoint:  I view people who are using dating sites as desperate people who likely don't have much to offer a significant other.

I suppose if you are using a dating site that only draws from a very small area then you might not be as desperate as someone who is using a national or international site but it also presents other problems.  One problem in my mind is how lazy and afraid of people do you have to be to try and use a website to meet people in your immediate area?  I mean you are not likely to meet anyone on a site like who wouldn't be going to the same grocery stores, coffee shops and parks that you would which makes them people that you would be likely to run into if you just could get yourself to get out of the house and allow yourself to meet other people.  Now I suppose you could say that it is difficult to meet people in stores and other such places because we are all too involved with our own lives but it is my belief that if a relationship is meant to develop and has any real chance of succeeding then both of you would overcome those things to meet each other.  I also believe that if you are that lazy and scared of people then you likely don't have much to offer a relationship anyway.

I guess I would like your opinions on dating sites for small localized areas and whether or not you would ever use one.

Christmas Memories

Saintvi asked in this post for us to tell her our favorite Christmas memories.  I decided that my memory would make for a good post.

My memory actually wasn't at Christmas and wasn't near family.  It was in July of 2005 and I was on staff at a summer camp.  One of the traditions at this camp was for the staff to have some kind of theme party every Friday night after the campers were in bed for the last night of their stay with us.  One week  the theme was Christmas in July and in order to be allowed into the party we had to be dressed up for it so I borrowed a sweater from another guy on staff.  Only thing is that this sweater might have fit a smallish 8 year old boy properly but was pretty small on me.  In fact it was small enough on me that it was basically skin tight where it covered which was barely to the top of my belly and sleeves that went just barely to my elbows.  Then to top it all off my roommate at the camp wrote in alternating red and green letters on my belly "Merry Christmas!"

I wish I had a picture of it because it was just so dang funny.  Well, I thought it was funny, I believe most of the rest of the staff would have used the word "disgusting" to describe it.  I worked at that same camp again the next summer and one of the theme nights for the campers was Christmas in July.  I started to get excited for the opportunity for a repeat performance every week until the first all staff meeting at camp when the director singled me out and told me that if I wore that sweater I would be fired on the spot.

What is your most inappropriate Christmas memory?
