| EMSWell I finally completed my first major stride into the EMS world, I am an Emergency First Responder (EFR or EMT-FR depending what state you are in). Im sure any EMT that is reading this is like "What, I didn't ever take first responder to be an EMT Basic." Ya well, here you don't have to either...unless you are going for an EMS degree at the Farmington extension of the UNM School of Medicine EMS program. Basically the class is the same as EMT-B except there is less about working the ambulance and everything that comes along with it like treating en-route and D-charting (though we do cover a lot of it) and there are a few things I can't do that EMT-Bs can, the only thing I can think of right now is the combi-tube (for those EMTs reading this I can do LMAs). The main difference is that my class hours are like a third of what EMT-Bs get so basically it's like this is what this is, this is how you use it, and you'll get about 10 mins to practice with it before we move on, whereas an EMT has to be able to do it in their sleep. I'm serious my test was written the medics have to do a written plus a skills evaluation to prove they can do what they say they can do, thats why they get so much more time to practice. There is also a lot more time on patient evaluation, again mine was just a crash coarse. Even though they told me that this means that they may have this and that I probebly will only remember obvious stuff like shock and hypoglycemic reactions everything else I'd probebly just tell the medic his vitals and such and say "iono." I'm hoping to get on with the volunteer fire dept (perks of being in a rural area you can get the firefighter experience without commiting your life to it) in one of the closer districts, I hear they love EFRs. Anyway see you guys around. | | |

| "Things You Never Want to Hear Your Rescuer Say"Oops! Holy Shit! (never said it, but said 'oh shit' a couple times) The book never tole me about that! Honestly, I know what I'm doing; I'm just having an off day. Wow, what'd ya know, the book was right. That's not supposed to happen. I guess that will have to do. (heard that one myself before) Does your heart always do that? Ah geez not again! The guys back at the station are gonna love this! You really should have told me that sooner. Does this hurt?....No?.....It should. That's ok, I hear voices too. -Devin Kerins I love this book | | |
