I don't think they're sinful... just kind of irresponisble. I mean, do you really want a tattoo on you 30, 40 years down the road? Its permantent... make sure it actually has a purpose.. besides just being cool

sin is sin, there is no scale. If getting a tattoo is a sin, I'm not sure. But consider these facts, your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit and as such you should treat your body with as much respect as you'd give a temple of God (because that's what you are.) Temples do have decorations, adornments, and paintings but they all have a purpose. Also, you should not conform to the patters of this world. You could take this as don't get a tattoo at all, but then again in that same light you wouldn't be able to drive. I suggest finding out why you want one and what it would mean to you and also pray about it to see if it's something He wants you to have, after all it is His temple we're talking about.
