| Money over Values? :(
I just came back from the career fair and I just like to say that I am disappointed in humanity!!! I might seem a little (just a little..hahah) over dramatic right now, but whatever I don't really care.
The incident that made me wonder about the world: I went to the Irvine Company booth (the worst company ever) and talked to the recruiter. We discussed my career plans and goals. He asked me what major I was and I said that I was a History major. Then he asked if I had any job experience, I told him that I have Office Assistant experience and would consider doing that full-time in the future, but not as a long term path. I told him that I would like to move above filing and administrative support, "I just feel that I didn't go to school for four years to file" (maybe I shouldn't have said that, but at least I have motivation to move above what I am doing right now). He said, "Well you DID major in HISTORY".
The first thing that popped into my mind was,
HOW RUDE!!!! Thanks for just telling me I wasted four years in college to file papers into a cabinet!! JERK!
I didn't want to make a scene so I just acted like nothing was wrong, wrapped up the conversation with the EVIL GUY and walked away...
Why I am disappointed: How lame is it to live in a world that values accounting, business, and technical degrees over humanities. Not that I am saying one major is more important that another, but I think humanity majors DESERVE more respect!! Humanity majors can do more for this world than just teach!
Did you know that Steven Spielberg was an English major? Most people after they graduate usually don't even go into the field that they focused in.
It is ridiculous that the financial and technical fields have become more important than Social Sciences and Humanities. Again, not that there is anything wrong with those majors, it just that liberal arts majors should not be seen as useless.
Is it really more important to the world to learn budgeting, making useless products seem appealing, and business techniques that cut cost (but also destroy lives)? I guess companies that are looking for potential employees think it is more valuable to them to have those skills than to be able to analyze war, riots, massacres, and economic depression.
It is useless to them to understanding how and why these events occur in order to prevent or lessen future outbreaks and in the process saving and improving thousands if not millions (ok I might be over exaggerating hahaha) of lives. Making the world better is not important as making more money...this is what makes me sad.
I'm not saying that all technical and business majors are bad; I just think that humanity majors should be viewed as equally important. I just would like to be able to say, "I'm a history major" without feeling like I picked an easy major or that I am useless to the world.
To all of my friends that are technical and business majors/focused I am not saying that I think it's bad, I would just like to be considered on the same level of intelligence as you when I am applying for a job.
