The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings)
By J.R.R. Tolkien

I just started reading The Fellowship of the Ring and noticed that the Shire music theme from the movie plays in my head while I read.  I've been ruined by the talkies!

Work has been slow lately.  It's been so slow that I started reading Economics in One Lesson at my desk.  It dispels common economic myths that politicians use to win votes.  The book takes patience to read, but I think it's well worth it.  Check it out.

The site on which that economic book is found has this great picture on a page about the war on drugs.

A little drop'll do ya!

It's probably a sign that I'm hanging out on too many Libertarian websites, but I think I'm changing my mind about drugs.  When I happen to catch the show Cops, it usually strikes me that the drug users they catch are more pathetic than they are criminal.  If being pathetic is a crime... well... let's not go there.

But stop and think: Our nation stopped Prohibition because it was unpopular and - more importantly - it had disastrous, unintended social consequences.  But here we are, over seventy years later, fighting a war on drugs.  Why?

I don't use drugs or advocate drug use, but I'm not convinced that this 'war' is worth it.

  • The Stranger was a strange book.  I'm sure there's some deeper meaning to it, but I've never been good at finding messages in non-didactic fiction.
  • This morning the kids did that one thing most parents work very hard to prevent.  They mixed all their Play-Doh colors together.
  • Is anybody on board with that DTV converter box?  I just got one and it's completely useless unless you have an outdoor antenna.  After it went though the autoscan I only had about five or six channels which I wouldn't watch anyway.  I'll probably return it next week.
  • FYI: I didn't use a government coupon to buy the stupid DTV box.  It's absurd to believe that the government should subsidize my choice of entertainment (even if they are the ones who interfered with it in the first place).

I had something to write today, but forgot it was when I got home.

That being the case, here are two strange ideas that crossed my mind:

- Posthumous name change
- Misplaced puddle

Also, I had a letter printed in the Metro yesterday (page 15 in this PDF).  Not my proudest moment, but how could one be pleased about any interaction with the vitriolic, self-righteous column printed on page 13?

I'm not completely paranoid, but...
Every time I rebuff the people who call for donations for the police or fire department I wonder if they put my family on a DNR list.

If so, so be it.

In other news, the pool is up... and threatening to roll down the lawn again.  I tried to level the ground, but I got tired and said, "It looks good enough."

When will I ever learn?

Why is it called a 'trailer' if it precedes the movie?
