| The MileRemember running the mile all throughout more than half of your K-12 years? Today on the way to class I saw a bunch of little middle schoolers running the mile on a track. I chuckled a little to myself. It was tempting to walk up and point and laugh loudly, especially at the girls who 'walk' the mile. There are always some of those. I think I was one. No I wasn't only my mile times weren't the greatest. I never claimed to be an athlete. I think the best mile I ever ran in my life was only barely under 8 minutes. That only happened once. I pretty much average 10 minutes a mile. I have zero tolerance for pain.
I sure didn't envy those kids. You run the mile twice a year!
What was your best mile time?
| "Cabining" Part DeuxLast year the guys banned the girls from the annual camping trip that a group of friends from Madison take each summer. I mean, why wouldn't you want your girlfriend of 7 years and the wife of your two beautiful daughters to come camping with you? Nothing like sharing the great wilderness with your significant other to make it the perfect weekend getaway...right? Well, little did the men know that they can't ban us because WE'RE going camping too and YOU'RE not invited. And it's not just camping, we do it better--cabining (v.) The act of enjoying the great outdoors comfortably in an enclosed structure with running water, electricity, warm beds, a gourmet kitchen, an indoor AND an outdoor hot tub. And so this new tradition continues...
This year's site: http://www.secluded-valley.com/photos.html
The girls' first year cabining together was not exactly successful although it wasn't a complete failure either. There were many near death experiences (myself included) as we decided to embark on a canoing trip with a case of beer and a one liter bottle of brandy...in the rain, and did I mention, only one person knew how to canoe? This resulted into turning a one hour canoing trip to about...three and a half hours. And pretty much after that we ended up at the closest downtown area until bar time.
I am very much looking forward to cabining again as not only will it be a great start to the summer but last year provided for many memories, laughs, and good girl bonding time...with nature too of course.
| When we were young... Kaying and I When we were young I remember my cousin Ka and I shared an old briefcase full of loose papers filled with our dreams for the future. These pages were full of scribbles, collages glued together from magazines, and stories we wrote together. She's in Guatemala currently embarking on her two years as a 'foot solider for compassion*' with the Peace Corps. I am very proud of her, but at the same time I worry about her being away from family and friends in a foreign country where she may only be able to bathe once a week. I know she is an amazingly smart and talented woman and whatever hardships that may come her way, she will be able to shoulder well. I can't wait to see her at the end of her journey, to see how much she may have changed and hear the stories she will have to tell. This gets me to wondering where I will be in two years. Some of us have known since when we were young what we wanted to be when we grow up. Others may take a little while but if I've learned anything in my years, it's that everything happens for a reason and you should never forget to count your blessings. *In a send off speech from G. W. Bush

| TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood, | |
| And sorry I could not travel both | |
| And be one traveler, long I stood | |
| And looked down one as far as I could | |
| To where it bent in the undergrowth; | 5 |
| |
| Then took the other, as just as fair, | |
| And having perhaps the better claim, | |
| Because it was grassy and wanted wear; | |
| Though as for that the passing there | |
| Had worn them really about the same, | 10 |
| |
| And both that morning equally lay | |
| In leaves no step had trodden black. | |
| Oh, I kept the first for another day! | |
| Yet knowing how way leads on to way, | |
| I doubted if I should ever come back. | 15 |
| |
| I shall be telling this with a sigh | |
| Somewhere ages and ages hence: | |
| Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— | |
| I took the one less traveled by, | |
| And that has made all the difference. | 20 |
