What do you all think? Does a toe swell and bruise like this if it's not broken? Yet, I don't want to pay to go to the doctor for a toe...
This is what it looks like 12 hours after I banged it. It's about twice the size of my other pinkie toe.  I spent a lot of time in the dirt today, so at first we thought my foot was just dirty, but then I washed it. I now have it taped to the next toe, but it hurts more because it's being made to straighten when it wants to be folded in a weird way- I have strange pinkie toes. My toenail now appears to be on the side of my foot, not the top? Dislocated perhaps?
Eww. Feet are gross.

Dipnetting tomorrow-what a lovely way to celebrate Leah's birthday!!!
Have a cuppa to celebrate, and enjoy starting your DTS, it looks like fun!

With the weird angle of your toe (going off the fact that your toenail is pointing to the side and not the front) I'd definately say, at best, dislocated.  Very much could be broken.  While I would usually say, "Don't bother going to the doctor about a toe."  I think, in this situation, I would consider it.  If the toe is dislocated, it needs to be righted, and if broken, it needs set so it will feel properly.  If you have the health insurance, I'd definately go to the doctor about it.

I broke my pinky toe and it swelled and bruised and I did not go to the doctor. It did not however, turn to the side like that, and I have to say that if it had, I would have gone to the doctor. I vote go. I feel your pain!!

OW! If it's dislocated, the dr might set it but- but that will probably hurt worse than the original injury. If it's broken, he would only do exactly what you are doing now. I would at least put ice on it. A lot. get the swelling down so you can maybe see what's going on a little better.

I agree with pinkdebster.

I broke both my pinky toes at different times from walking around barefoot and accidentally slamming furniture.

Ice it. {{{hugs}}}

Denise said not to tape it since it hurts, make sure no bone is sticking out of your skin and ice it. If you got it X-rayed she said she prob wouldn't do anything with it unless it healed in a weird positon... she said you can call her if you want to. Its great having a podiatrist handy....

The bruising will probably make it's way down the side of your foot too. That is what mine did when I had the same injury (caught my pinkie toe on a chair leg while running to get the buzzing dryer load at 2am) I am sure mine was broken, but didn't go to the dr. (I was a youth group sponsor for the ski trip the next day....I was so miserable!) Yours being turned makes me think you should go to the dr and get it set right though. If it's from a break, it won't go back on it's own! (unless it's from the swelling)

I am so sorry! But I do hope you have a great camping/fishing trip. I was just telling my friend about that this morning. =)

We're almost out of time so I don't have time to read everyone else's comments, so sorry if they said this already but your toe definitely looks broken and also definitely looks worse than mine - i.e. that it might be out of alignment. So it may be worth it to pay for X-rays. It looks turned out of alignment far more than mine did. Also, you should be icing it for 15 minutes every 2 hours. That definitely helped me feel better. They also had me put a little bit of cotton ball between the broken toe and the next one and tape it to the next two toes to keep it straight. I'm SO SORRY!!!! I totally know how much it hurts! For what it's worth, it's been about three weeks now and my toe definitely is feeling better. I hope you get it figure out!!
