    Today in History:

    November 18, 1307

    William Tell

According to legend, on this day in 1307, William Tell was arrested by Hermann Gessler, a local magistrate in Switzerland seeking to enforce Hapsburg rule in the region. Tell had refused to bow to a symbol of Hapsburg rule in the town square of Burglen. As punishment, Gessler forced Tell, a famed bowman, to shoot an apple off of Tell's young son's head. Tell did so successfully. When Gessler asked why Tell had with him two arrows, Tell indicated that had he missed and killed his son, the second arrow was for Gessler. Tell later killed Gessler in a battle with a crossbow.

    A Quick Holiday Travel Reminder

It is a fact that this holiday travel season may be busier than once expected.  Lower fuel costs and cut backs in airline seating capacity will be couple of the reasons why we will see congestion on some of the roads and in airports.  So here are just a few tips to help your holiday travels be less stressful.

    1. Be at the airport at least 2 hours early, 3 hours if you are on an international flight.  Do not plan on getting to the airport a few minutes ahead of departure just because you checked in online.  While check in lines may be the source of some delays, the larger issue is security.  In some airports like Orlando, Atlanta and Dallas, security lines can be as long as 1-2 hours.  If you want less stress....arrive in time to allow for unforeseen delays and use the extra time for shopping, eating etc.

    2. Do not wrap presents before your flight.  TSA has the right to unwrap anything that they feel is questionable regardless of if your gifts are in your carry on bags or checked in bags.  Eliminate this stress factor by waiting to wrap your gifts upon arriving at your destination.

    3. If driving...try to leave a day earlier than planned.  You never know what the weather will hold and having an extra day's cushion in your travel plans can help reduce the stress of weather delays or other unplanned traffic delays.

    4.  Do not lock you luggage.  Once again TSA has the right to "enter" your bags at anytime before your flight to conduct a search.  If there are locks on your checked bags, they have the authority to cut those locks off to conduct their search.

    5.  Do not pack valuables in your checked baggage.  While we like to think that are bags are safe once they are checked in at the airport, statistics prove otherwise.  To be on the safe side, try to pack all your valuables in a carry on bag as long as they meet TSA content requirements.  This also applies to medications that you may need.  Do not pack your medication in your checked bags in case of unforeseen airport delays or lost luggage.

I hope these tips and reminders help you have the most stress free holiday season possible.  Please let me know if you have any travel related questions and I will do my best to find you an answer.

    Look for the Silver Lining...

Just wanted to pass on news again that came out today about the travel environment.  I guess I am trying to be a beacon of positive news in a time when the headlines lack anything remotely encouraging.  This is an excerpt from the Seattle Times:

"Air, cruise and hotel prices tumble
By Peter Pae and Jane Engle

With the economy in distress, there might be no cheaper time to travel than this winter, as a sharp drop in demand forces airlines, hotels and cruise companies to slash fares, cut rates and lower fees.

In what might be a silver lining during a season of economic angst, travelers are finding some of the best deals in recent memory, from half-priced resorts to rock-bottom airfares.

"These are glorious times for travelers who have a job and the money," said Chris McGinnis, a travel consultant.

Some off-peak, round-trip tickets from the West Coast to Honolulu have been selling for under $300 in recent weeks. Such fares were around $800 in summer. So few seem to be traveling this winter that Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., has been offering three free hotel nights and three days of theme park admission for booking a four-day stay. Some resorts in Mexico have slashed hotel rates by half or thrown in free meals."
