our beloved dog, fozzie, passed away this weekend. i'm not sure how old he was, but i know we had him for about
ten years. we rescued him and gave him a good home. i miss him a lot. picture was taken by my older sister, tara.

2008 Olympics: Women's Edition

So, I've been watching me some Olympics this year and have gotten pretty invested in a few women's athletes over the course of the games. Below are six women who I have particularly found to be extraordinary for one reason or another. These are just the ones that I have watched, for there are many, many amazing women athletes in the Olympics - I just haven't been keeping up very well.

This woman sticks out particularly to me over the rest - not just because
she won the gold in the women's marathon, but because she is 38 years old.
Now, I did not watch the entire marathon, but was flipping back and forth to
catch tidbits. This woman took the lead alone, and when I say lead, I mean, at
least a mile or so ahead of the rest of the pack. I don't know what my deal is, but it seems that
anything and everything makes me cry as of late, so when she entered the
stadium to run her final 500 meters, my eyes may or may not have become misty at the
sound of the audiences' welcoming cheers. I mean, imagine it...you've just run 26 odd miles
and you're about to finish it up, probably can't even feel your legs, your head is probably
pounding...I mean...what do you think about?! Do you think about the other runner's you've
left in the dust? Or about the gold you know is now yours? Maybe about what you're going
to eat when you're finished or how good that shower is going to feel? I don't know. I hate
running myself, but to be good at it and enjoy it enough to train for months ahead of time...
I think that deserves a lot of respect. And to win the gold, I think that deserves a lot of props.

SHAWNJOHNSON

Now, I admit, this little thing has been the victim of a few jokes of mine. I also admit
that I openly refer to her as "that Shawn thing," with a friend of mine, but all in all, you
have to give it to this girl. She's a powerhouse. At the young age of 16, Shawn Johnson has
fulfilled a lot of the U.S's expectations. At this year's Olympics, she snatched up the gold for
women's balance beam, and also three silvers in all around, floor exercise, and also team. Though
I lovingly poke fun at her uneven eyebrows and muscle-hulk walk, I actually want to be her.
You look at her, and you think, wow, she's 16 and you know she probably has sacrificed a lot
in her life (social outtings, school, friends) to get to where she is. And the way she flips around
and jumps and splits...I'm jealous! Though she be but little, she is fierce. And in any interview
I have watched of her, she is so sweet and humble. That Shawn
thing is my idol.

At first, whenever I would watch Nastia Liukin in between competitions, I would express
my confusion as to why she was so determined to look like a sour puss. I may or may not have
even said that she "puts the nasty in Nastia." But after hearing what I heard about this 19 year
old, I can totally understand that her facial expressions probably occur out of pressure rather than
snobbery. Born to two former champions gymnasts (Olympic gold medal winner Valeri Liukin
and World Champion Anna Kotchneva), you can only imagine that the pressure must run high
in that jungle-gym household. I heard that her father (who also is her coach) even went so far as saying, "There's no such
thing as not winning in our household" - but I think that was made up. But still...when your father's
an Olympic gold winner (AND YOUR COACH) and your mother a World Champion, you probably
want to keep the family line of fireplace mantle medals going. That dream came true as Nastia
won the women's individual all-around gold (making her the third American woman in history
to do so - the two previous being Mary Lou Retton and Carly Patterson). With Shawn Johnson
winning that section with a silver, the duo became the first ever Americans to hold both first
and second place in women's individual all-around gymnastics. So yeah, WORK IT NASTIA.
She also won a handful of other medals during these Olympic games.

MISTYMAY-TREANOR

KERRIWALSH

These two amazings (yes, I just amazing a noun) have won gold for beach volleyball both in
this year's Olympics and in 2004's. They have been called the greatest volleyball team of all
time. I have seen many teams play together during the Olympics, but none seem to gel as well
as Walsh and May-Treanor. They seem to read each other's minds and have each other's back
- which is exactly what you need when playing beach volleyball. May-Treanor (right) has won
more tournaments than any other female player with 103. Prior to finding each other, neither
were winning like they've been winning together. May-Treanor has referred to Walsh as her "other
half" and "sister." It's all about team chemistry and these two have plenty of it.

DARATORRES
United States

Okay, so I may or may not have a girlcrush on Dara Torres. Breaking Olympic women's
swimming records, this FOURTY-ONE year old is tearing it up. She has competed in five
Olympic games - 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000 and now this year in 2008. Twelve Olympic medals
in all (4 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze), Torres won three during 2008, all silver, in the 50 meter
freestyle, 4×100 medley relay, and 4×100 freestyle relay. AT FOURTY-ONE! SILVER!
COMPETING AGAINST WOMEN IN THEIR 20s!!! She's amazing! And to boot, she made
the 2008 Olympic team, just 15 months after giving birth to her lovely daughter, Tessa.
Yes, she has "retired" twice, but she has said that she still doesn't feel like she is done.
This chick is the first woman to swim in the Olympics past the age of 40 and she definitely is making
sure her age is never an issue. Along with Natalie Coughlin and Amanda Beard, Dara was
named Co-Captain for the 2008 Olympic team. She's completely down to earth - she
makes sure she hugs and congratulates the winners after every race, you can find her bobbing
to music on her headphones with players minutes before races, and she has a great sense of
humor. Michael Phelps, fellow Olympic swimmer and medaler (hello, 8 gold) jokingly refers to
her as "Mom" as she is almost 20 years his senior. She is an amazing athelte and great role
model - especially to women who feel they are too old to still chase after the careers/goals they
want. LOVE DARA.
