Big Smiles :-D

Well, folks - it's done. Yup, that's right. Yesterday marked a big change in my life and in the life of Gus.

We'll start with Gus first. While I was gone at camp, Dad had the engine cleaned. There had been a small oil drip that we had been keeping our eye on. However, the 'burning oil' smell was quite pungent when the car came to a stop (some of you can attest to that). Turns out I had a major oil leak that was coating the engine in oil.

Oops
.

But the engine has been cleaned, the oil leak(s) fixed, and Gus works better than ever. Then, as a surprise and congrats for my senior year, Dad put in a stereo system in Gus. For those of you who have never had the privilidge of riding in my yellow minivan, Gus came equipped with a radio that was so weak, that struggled to pull in channels. The 'loudness' of the system was so quiet that if you had the windshield wipers on you couldn't hear the radio. But no more! Thanks to Dad's bargain-hunting and a totally ridiculous sale, Gus now has a CD player and sound system!!!! Finally, last night, we put freon in the van and got the AC to work for the first time in six years. So hopefully I won't be sweating to death as I drive to Bryan next week. Pretty exciting stuff, guys.

So for me ... I got my braces off yesterday after a year of orthodontal torture. It was my third time in braces. Not fun. But they are off, my teeth look great, my smile is twice as big, and my retainers feel funky. But I will get used to them. :)

So that's what's new on the homefront. I leave for Bryan in seven days and Nathan flies to Singapore for half-a-year in seven days. Crazy. Senior year, here we come!
Stay out of the heat, friends.

I'm BaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAACK!

Hooray for being home and seeing my family again. It's been a neat two weeks at Ohio Camp Cherith. And now I am going to go to bed.

'47' - thanks for the card. It came on Thursday.
Sutton - the postcard was great. Took me a second to realize it didn't belong to a girl in my cabin because all I looked at was "Stephanie".

Thanks to the rest for your prayers. One girl accepted Jesus as her Savior and two others recommitted their lives. Seeds were planted ... I'm letting God do the rest.

Take care! See most of you on the flip-side at Bryan!

Camp Camp and more Camp

Well, I'm wrapping up week 5 of Camp Jabez with the inner city kids. Last week, the kids were terrors. Between threats on the counselors, some nasty fights, flagrant disobedience, and frustrating behavior ... well, we were glad when Friday came. After three days of intensive work (short because of the holiday), we staff were exhausted. When Monday rolled around, we were excited about a new group. "Glad we're done with them!"

But guess who showed up.

And the first two guesses don't count.

We all panicked. Our curriculum is set up for one week of camp, with no repeaters. Top that off with downpour rain at a camp with limited indoor facilities (a garage and horse barn) ... AH! But I write this as a testament to God's goodness. The kids have been completely different, strangely enough. Their leaders don't know what has come over them. No fights, minimal complaints, constant hugs, and even enthusiastic participation in crafts and songs from some of the toughest boys. I ask myself the same thing - what happened?  Did the three days of sweat and tears really make that much of a difference? Or maybe ... just maybe ... God is using one or two seeds that we had the blessing of planting? Who knows.

On Saturday I leave for Camp Cherith -- my 'regular' outdoor  camp in the woods about thirty minutes from Canada. I will be working, Lord-willing, with the littlest campers: 8 year old girls. My biggest challenges are bed-wetting and homesickness. :) Of course, my assignment could change -- like last year when I took seven 14-year-old girls on week-long backpacking trip! Only God knows the details.

If you feel pity/a kind stroke of friendship and want to send me a letter, the address will follow. Don't send anything after Wednesday, July 26, because it won't arrive in time before I leave. I'll be at camp from July 15-29.

I come home on the 29th and leave for Bryan on August 10 -- the same day Nathan flies to Singapore until March. Ah, a season of changes.

My camp addy:
Teke (Bethany Perseghetti)

See most of you soon!

BREAK IN!

So I added a new experience to my list: having my car being broken into. Being robbed is a rather unsettling feeling.

For those of you who have been to my home, you know we live in one of the safest neighborhoods around. Last night, however, proved otherwise. I noticed the unfortunate incident this morning when I rode my bike past Gus. Strange, I thought, my door isn't shut all the way. I circled back around my car and noticed other unusual things. My change box (you know, the small pull-out drawer underneath the radio?) was open, all my receipts were scattered on the ground, my $25 (empty) gas card was missing, and my Speed Way card was gone. And so were my sunglasses. My favorite sunglasses.

My first reaction was disbelief, shock, anger, and the angst. Disbelief that this happened, shock that they left the loose change, anger that it happened to me ... and then angst. My $300 hiking back-pack was in the back of my van. Was it still there? Thankfully the crooks were dumb enough to take my $10 glasses and leave the real valuables. It seems like it was a real quick-in and quick-out.

And the moral of the story is: if you're going to steal something, take the loose change at least.

On the brighter side, I went to the Gospel Mission (the inner city organization that owns Camp Jabez) and saw the kiddos that we had at camp all week. Despite their bratty behavior at camp and our repeated punishment of them, they hugged me and wouldn't let me eat my lunch. It was nice. :)
