northern California 1: driving

Golden Gate Bridge, afarI've been in the bay area for a couple of days, and the hotel has free broadband access.  I've checked my email, posted some photos, and logged onto facebook, so what's left besides blogging?

The weather here really is fantastic.  It's been sunny every day, and the high today was 78; I could have worn shorts if I had brought them.

It snowed in Chicago the day before I left.

I was surprised to see that people drove slower out here.  The speed limit is lower in Chicago but people drive faster.  That's not to say there was no temptation.  Those roads were from a car commercial.  As I drove through curved mountain roads, I daydreamt I was in control of some finely tuned sports machine rather than a midsize family sedan.  Or maybe I upgraded to a convertible, since it was a daydream anyway.

Perhaps it's better that I live in flatlands of the midwest, where moth and rust destroy such pretty vehicles, and the dreams therein.

last winter when i was in california, i noticed that i was speeding a lot down the residential roads and had to check myself. i realized it's because the streets are so narrow in boston and there are always people going slow (because they're lost) -- that whenever i can, i go as fast as i can (which is only about 35 mph in residential). but in california, with wide streets, no one in your way, that pedal is just longing to hit the metal.. =P
