Legend of the Dogwood

I forgot my lunch I had made for today, too many errands to do on my way to work, so had to punt for lunch.  Decided that a salad from a local Tea Room would be good for me, and I love their Yogurt and Dill Dressing (which they gave me the recipe for, have to share it sometime).  Anyway, on the drive back to the University, I noticed the street I was on, a residential street, was just lined with Dogwood Trees and it made me think of the legend I have always heard about the Dogwood Tree.  It is just a legend, to my knowledge has no biblical backing, but it is neat anyway, and if you examine the flowers of a dogwood.......... well, read the legend:

In Jesus time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.

'Twas strong and firm, it's branches interwoven
For the cross of Christ it's timbers were chosen.

Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:

"Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so.

Slender and twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.

As blood stains the petals marked in brown
The blossom's center wears a thorny crown.

All who see it will remember Me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.

Cherished and protected this tree shall be
A reminder to all of My agony."

Oh, the salad was wonderful, very fresh fancy lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers, and croutons they make themselves.  They also make their own bread, awesome stuff.  Guess I could have taken a picture, but I don't think there was time........... I was hungry.  I also got my afternoon tea there, they put just a hint of cinnamon in their tea, really unique.

Supposed to be a georgeous weekend here, may take Lucy out and put a few rounds through her, as Ben has a new something or other that he wants to shoot, supposed to be all the rave with local police officers right now, and Josh will want to shoot one of the carbines, I'm sure, he knows which two will never be fired.  Now that we have a stock of ammo and can fight off the hoards, we can burn a few rounds.  I'd really like to try fishing, but depends on whether we can get to our regular spot, which luckily there are two roads to, one upper and one lower.  The lower is under water, I'm sure, but the upper may be dried out by now.

Well, need to put a requisition in the system for the Band Director (has no secretary, and asked for a favor, so I'll oblige him).  More on the Sooner family later.  Have a great rest of the week, and hope the weekend is as beautiful as they are saying it is going to be.

weekend is going to be beautiful....i don't believe there is any reference to what wood the cross was made out of, just that he was hung on a tree...we have a very large dogwood in our neighborhood and every spring i await the flowers...it is a stunning specimen and they don't usually do well up here (too cold)...salad sounds yummy

Oh the streets are just lined with them here (both the white and the pink), it is absolutely breathtaking, considering most yards have azaleas in full bloom as well.  I love just driving around, the thunderstorm we had last night didn't even dampen the spirits (the wind better have left the blooms alone tho).

Yeah, I did some research too, no reference to what kind of tree he was hung on, but as I said, that is just legend, has been around for ages.  It is beautiful tho, and if you examine the bloom, it really holds true to the story.

I've heard that before, I wonder if it's true. Have you ever noticed pine trees right before Easter. There are certain ones that have little crosses at the top of their stems. It always happens just before Easter. I forgot to look this year. I usually do a post about it each year with a pic but since I was on Xanga leave I forgot about it. Hope you get to fish this weekend. And thanks for the prayers, as I told you on AIM, I'm feeling a lot more like Grampy now, not totally there yet, but Much closer now. Hope you catch a big ole slab Crappie for me  and take his pic too. Happy fishin'

I understand.
The threshold level for the number of thinks it takes to derail my train has been slowly dropping for some time now.

@UnworthyofHisgrace - No, I've never heard that about pine trees, I'll have to check next year.  Right now, the yellow pollen that's coming off the pines near our garage has us all sneezing, and me drowning.  Didn't stop me from opening windows and letting the house air out yesterday.

@ezmrlda - I am so sorry, I was afraid that might happen, given the parent situation and her lack of medications.  Here's hoping son can get back on with his life and I'm sure she is not through with him, yet.

The salad sounds delicious!  Dogwoods are popping her and my cherry tree is ready to bloom.  A few more days like today and it will definitely feel like spring!  Tulips are out and daffodils are finishing up... I've missed you, my dear!

@heart_of_gold2006 - @UR4evrInMyHeart - Oh, the salads from this tea room are awesome, but I think it is the bread and yogurt and dill dressing that keeps me coming back, awesome stuff.  I love this time of year, I could do without the flooding, some nice gentle rains, but as they say, April showers (floods) bring May flowers.......... provided you get them in the pots.  This weekend........... maybe.
