Well, here it is--finally winter!  We are beginning to break our new furnace in, now that it's cold out.  We turned the heat off in Matt's room since he is currently not occupying it.  The cats are trying to take it over, I think.  I have to shoosh them out of it everytime I turn around!  Grandma Cathcart is going to be making new drapes for it so that Matt won't have to use blankets for curtains anymore!

Matt seems to be adjusting well to Lock Haven. . .just to be sure, you'll have to check out his site at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=11080811

Lately, it seems as though the Lord has allowed a lot of death and suffering in the lives of people I know.  The elementary gym teacher at school just went through 'the valley' as her husband died after a short bout with pancreatic cancer.  Her testimony was absolutely incredible--she shared it with 'cyberfriends' through a page at http://www.carepages.com/home.jsp  called 'inhisworkshop'.  You can sign up for your own user ID [it's free!] and then access this page--but beware:  you'll need a tissue handy.  We continue to pray for her and her family.

A few days ago, our youngest son's teacher lost her mom to the debilitating effects that older age quite often brings.  In addition, the wife of one of our deacon's at church just lost her mom as well.   Plus, our neighbor, whom I've become very good friends with, is tending to her mom in the hospital as she waits to hear the reasons for the hospitalization.  A difficulty there is a language barrier:  her mom is Korean and isn't easily understood.

So, as the days go by, we are thankful to the Lord for the warmth and joy of a nice home.  But even more, we are so thankful for a home filled with His love and provision.

God Came Near (Lucado, Max)

So it's a new year. . .Larry and I were talking about some of the things that happened in 2006. . .

. . .The Lord changed a bunch of things in Matt's life, including schools and friendships/relationships
. . .Mell entered her senior year at FHS and has earned quite a few accolades.
. . .Michelle got braces and became a high schooler, playing on varsity soccer
. . .Michael entered his last year of elementary school and started playing indoor
. . .Larry got some new teeth.
. . .Our littlest niece was born on July 5
. . .Larry's brother and his wife accepted a position in Sedona, AZ.  (Looks like at some point in time we may be visiting the Grand Canyon!)
. . .Our oldest niece Stephanie graduated and entered Word of Life Bible Institute
. . .We have gained good friends who are also our neighbors.
. . .Our Orlando Ave. Neighborhood Watch Group was successful in getting a local bar to shut down
. . .Our church continues to grow

This has been a good start to 2007, even though in the early morning hours we were plagued with phone calls from a too-needy person.  (Enough said. . . )  I updated my big prayer journal and added a cool calendar to my computer desktop.  I've also started a new Bible study entitled "Jesus The One and Only" by Beth Moore.  I've been skeptical of Beth Moore in the past, but thanks to some 'nudging' from a good friend, I'm 'test-driving' this study to see what I think.

I am always a little leary of the first few days of the new year--such a big 'blank book' is intimidating at times.  Some plans that we are making for the new year include

. . .taking Matt to Lock Haven in mid-January
. . .going to  Florida in April during Easter Break
. . .taking in a Detroit Tigers game sometime over the summer to make good on a gift we gave Mike for his birthday last summer
. . .helping Mell get started at LeMoyne

Well, enough for now.

Happy 2007 everyone!

So yeah..........anyone who reads this must've figured out that I either live an extremely exciting life or an extremely boring life since the last time I posted was in (GULP!!) August!

Well, it's usually the latter, so you haven't missed anything.

It has been a good fall, although it's been very busy with 'mother-ish' stuff, including being a spectator at soccer games and volleyball matches. . .working part-time at FHS (here's to those lucky people who work as 'nutritional providers in academic settings', AKA 'lunchladies'!). . .lots of laundry. . .lots of meal preparations (We eat a lot of 'crock' during various sports seasons!). . .sometimes homework help, sometimes counsel-giver (Lord-willing, it's wise counsel). . .all the time prayer warrior.  Along with that, I continue to enjoy teaching Sunday school lessons to 3rd/4th graders and being council time leader in AWANA to K-2nd graders.

Along that front, I'm toying with the idea of starting some sort of Bible club/class/thing in my home for neighborhood kids who have never been told about Jesus' love.  It's been on my heart a lot lately, but I'm just not sure of the timing of it.  I'd love to have another sister in Christ, maybe even a sister of color, as a co-leader, but not sure of that either.  I feel sometimes that AWANA is too 'churchy' and that the kids in my neighborhood just wouldn't get it. . .I'm just praying about the whole thing.  Bottomline:  THEY NEED JESUS!

I've been getting to know the family across the street pretty well.  They are a family of color--mom, dad, and 3 kids, the youngest of which is autistic.  It's been quite a journey for me to walk alongside the mom as she fights for services from the public schools for her autistic son--an eye opening journey of just what the public schools are like and how they treat people of color.  Let's just say it's not a pretty picture. . .  I am looking forward to opportunities to encourage her and share God's love, grace, and mercy with her.

Today was our annual family Christmas get-together on my mom's side. . .oh man. . .am I ever full of sugar!!  My aunts are all such good cooks, so in addition to a fabulous 'bring a dish to pass' meal, there were soooooooooooo many sweet treats, as it was also a 'cookie exchange'!  I'm not going to eat again until tomorrow lunch, I think!! HPIM2949

You've heard of 'bluetooth technology'. . .well, this is 'blue tongue technology'!HPIM2986

This is my brother and Mell--he is never serious!!  Can you tell. . .?HPIM2966

This is my littlest niece--my brother's daughter.  She was quite entranced by Rudolph's red nose.

Christmas break is going to be too short for all the things we want to do over the week and few days, I think.  One thing I need to start thinking about is helping Matt get ready to go to Lock Haven in mid-January.  I have such a peace about him going--it's not a "Boy am I glad he'll be out of the house!" sentiment, but more of a "Yes, it's perfect timing. . .thank you, Lord!" sentiment.  So many pieces have fallen together due to God's grace and mercy.

How to Delight the Heart of God
By Jan McCray

". . .[the Israelites] were impatient--and impatience is a fertile breeding ground for walking in fear.  We humans are willing to wait for God for a time, but if He does not come through in the way we think He should, our reasoning and evaluating take over and we revert to our old, familiar, sin nature ways of thinking and acting. . .(p. 35)  Fear always pulls us backward, never forward, in our walk with God. . .Complete, perfect love drives out fear.  The one who walks in fear is not loving God in a way that is flowing instinctively. . .It means we must get to the core of our relationship with God and His nature of love. . .(p. 39)  We will never let Him transform us, however, if we do not believe profoundly that our Father loves us and has our best interests at heart.  If we believe only His power and promises but not the love behind them, we will fall back constantly into our old reasoning or evaluating.  We cannot give only intellectual assent to this great love of God;  we must allow its reality to saturate our entire being. . ."(p. 41)
