  • Kentucky continued

Tuesday morning we all headed up to the farm house.   It's where my father-in-law grew up...he doesn't live there, but has owned it for many years as a summer place.   It is exactly like walking back into the past.  I've always told my friends who've never been there that a couple of early morning hours on the back porch listening to the mountains does me more good than a week's vacation.  My mother and father had never been to the farm so it was nice to have them along with us and share my wife's roots with them.  (my niece from Naples was with them too...she may have experienced some culture shock)

The farm is in the Daniel Boone National Forest between Patsey and Cobb Hill.

After our lunch at the farm house we took a decent sized hike down into the bottom to a log house where my Father-in-law was born.   It is the most beautiful spot!  A lush valley complete with a cave, a dripping spring that falls from 30-40 feet above, and a winding stream.  When I go into that valley I always wonder why anyone would leave.

After I preached Sunday morning we had a "liddle bite" at home, packed the car, and headed to Cincinnati.   Several factors have really trimmed our vacation down this year...Geo. Bush(it's the economy!), Hanover College(even with tuition paid...room and board ain't cheap),schedules, and etc.   We enjoyed the evening with my wife's parents in Cincinnati and spent the night with them Sunday and Tuesday.   Monday we got up early and headed to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

We traveled small highways until we got to Winchester where we picked up the interstate to Bert Combs Mountain Parkway.  Before we got there we made a stop in Paris to visit the Cane Ridge meeting house scene of one of the great awakenings that took place in the early history of our country.  It is a log church with a stone structure built over it to preserve it.

The next stop was in Winchester at the Ale 8 bottling company.  My wife has been an Ale 8 fan all of her life.  Her relatives in KY usually have their fridge stocked and it's always been a treat to have a cold Ale 8.  Ale 8 is a ginger ale with a big caffeine kick.

Next stop was at the Natural Bridge State Park where we hiked straight up the mountain to walk across the natural bridge.

It is a beautiful spot with several really good trails.

After the hike we got our room in Stanton at Abner's Motel.  We have stayed there many times through the years of our married life and have always found it to be the cleanest little motel ever.   My parents met us there on Monday evening and also spent the night.

    more to come...

I spent last Thursday working on a flooded home in Columbus, IN.   It was my first time to work with Samaritan's Purse...I had always associated them with the shoeboxes at Christmas and wasn't aware of their disaster relief operation.   I found their operation very impressive.   Not only was it highly organized, but there was a real spiritual sensitivity to the flood victims.

This snapshot was downtown Indianapolis last night.   We(the four of us plus a niece from FL)spent the evening walking Monument Circle, Circle Center Mall, etc.

  • Prom night

     IMG_0078

My daughter and her boyfriend just headed off to dinner and the prom.   I think I've had all the drama I want for a little while!  LOL   What will be for instance, the drama level of a wedding? (My wife just looked over my shoulder and reminded me that she dealt with most of the drama )

Speaking of weddings, I went today to celebrate with my family the 63rd wedding anniversary of my grandparents.  It was wonderful to see everyone.  One of my Aunties has parkinson's disease and her movements were wild and out of control...it just broke my heart and made me want to put my hands around Rush Limbaugh's fat neck and squeeze!

    Spring Break

Spring break was nothing too big this year.   S. and the kids went to Cincinnati in the early part of the week and I went down after the midweek services.   Thursday a.m. we met my sis-in-law at the brand new IKEA in Westchester.   We were terrible and loaded the car down with things...college looms for my eldest, so we were thinking about that &etc.   I love that store and tell my kids that when I grow up everything in my house will come from IKEA.   Do not even let the word shallow enter your mind! LOL

After IKEA we headed to sis-in-law's(she's a dynamite gardener) for some starts of perennials.    That was Thursday and I just put them in the ground this evening.   I abuse plants terribly...I planted them, didn't water them(rain is coming), but surprisingly almost everything grows for me.   I'm going to plant a vegetable garden this year.   It's been several years since I've done that and I'm excited about it.   Both of our parents can, freeze, and generally use all of nature's bounty so we both know how it's done.  With the afore-mentioned college looming, we aren't planning on much of a vacation this summer so maybe we can keep up with a garden.

It was a beautiful day in Indiana.  I made a few hospital calls late afternoon and even the hospital isn't too bad of a place when the sun is pouring in the windows.   Speaking of hospitals, we had a new baby in the church family.  Two ultrasounds said girl, but a boy was born.  I told everyone that the little fellow was just modest.
