Interests: My number one favorite hobby would have to be crocheting. When I have free time, I like to read. I am a big fan of Jane Austen. I enjoy music and have played piano for a long time. I am currently learning the guitar (very slowly). Other than that, I love to be happy and I love to laugh.
Expertise: I don't know that I am an expert at anything, but I come closest in the art of crochet. I also spend enough time working on math that I hope I am becoming somewhat of an expert in that field.

I'm about to embark on my first round of finals here at UCI. It seems like I just started here!

Good luck to everyone else who is a fellow sufferer for the next week or two. Maybe even enjoy yourself a little in the meantime!

Hello from the University of California, Irvine!

It has once again been quite some time since my last post, but I have come around at last. Life has been a bit crazy since I started graduate school. I have never studied so hard or learned so much all at once before. The only problem with this, well, I guess there would have to be two... would be this: it is very hard to stay sane and it is nearly impossible to find time to do things just for fun. I have now survived my first round of midterms, so I am beginning to get into the routine.

...Funny sidetrack story. My "currently reading" book is quite consuming as of late, but the funny thing is that it has me a tad star-struck. This is my first time being taught by the author of the textbook we are using. It gives a different flavor to the class since the professor obviously knows the subject inside and out. Going to a small school for my undergraduate schooling, I did not come into contact with such "stars" in their fields. Kinda neat, but scary...

So this past weekend, I spent some lovely time relaxing. On Veteran's Day, I felt that I could spend some time relaxing since there were no classes. I thought to myself..."You live only a few miles from the beach. Wouldn't it be lovely to take a little trip and see the sights?" So I did.

I packed myself a lunch and some other necessities, and headed out on my bike for an adventure. I discovered this lovely bike trail to the beach that runs through a wildlife reserve.

So I followed their instructions.

The path ran along this waterway to the beach. There were lots of ducks and other birds, some of which looked rather interesting. There were several places along the way reminding you to keep away from the protected areas. I thought these signs were funny:

STP60708

In case you can't read the sign, it says "Birds only past this point." I couldn't help but think of some poor turtle venturing out past this sign and being arrested for going into forbidden territory.

And then I arrived at my destination.

I ate lunch, read bit, and then decided to head down to the pier.

I then decided that I should go back and study. I had already gone many miles, so I was getting tired, so I decided to take the bus back home. It is very nice since I get to ride for free as a UCI student.

And to finish off, I thought I would show you a few pictures of my new abode.

Here is a view (a bad picture, yes) out my window where I sometimes gaze wishing to be out there.

Then, my bed, which surprisingly I did not make just to take the picture. I had already made it in the morning!

So far, it has been a lovely place to live, my roommate is very nice, I have made many new friends, so life is pretty good.

I have learned that the longer I wait to post, the more difficult it is to decide what to share. It seems like so many things have happened since April!

So, for starters, in May I turned 21. I was only able to take one picture on this occasion before my battery died...so here are two of my math buddies celebrating with me at Red Robin.

STP60565

Also in May, I had my college graduation ceremony. Besides the politically controversial speech by the honorary speaker, it was a very nice ceremony. As of July, I officially have graduated college with a BS in Mathematics! Brian also graduated from High School :)

STP60579

Besides all this excitement, I have been working at the same learning center. I have my own class of 5th and 6th grade students. That has been quite a lot of fun and work.

Then in July, my family and I got to fly out to Missouri and visit quite a number of exciting people.

Some ultra-cool relatives

STP60631

And some other ultra-cool old friends

STP60630

STP60655

And yet some other new ultra-cool friends

STP60687

And if that isn't enough excitement, I'm also planning to move to UC Irvine in September to start a graduate program there.

Isn't life just grand?!

Guess what.....I'm alive!!!

STP60564

This is me in one of my stranger moments, covered with some mud from the Dead Sea (my dad just got back from Jordan and brought us back some fresh mud)

Well, I don't know about you folks, but I have been crazy busy! As an update...I'm graduating next month. I can hardly believe it myself, but I think it is actually going to happen.

Well, school is becoming quite intense, so for a break from it all, I thought I would share a funny work story with you.

For those of you who don't know, I work at a small learning center right by my house. The children there are almost all Korean, and for the most part they are VERY bright. Yesterday a most amusing situation occured.

Now, you must understand that my class that day consisted of three 1st grade students and one 6th grade student (all male). In the course of their math lesson, one of the first graders said -- quite out of the blue -- "...well, people who live in apartments are poor." The sixth grader sitting next to him said with a smirk, "No, that's not true. Not everyone who lives in apartment is poor." This discussion went on for a little while in a very rational and adult-like manner, with three of the four children pitching in with their viewpoints. Finally, the fourth kid, a polite but sometimes blunt little first grader, spoke up and said "...well... I live in an apartment...and I'm poor..........I only have THIRTEEN DOLLARS!"

Needless to say, it was all I could do to keep from bursting out in a fit of laughter. Fortunately, I was able to keep it all inside and remind them all to return to their math.

So everyone, I hope you are all doing well and finding the joy and laughter that can sometimes be found in the littlest things.
