Base Camp

I wrote this based on a dream. I submitted it to a local writer's publication. This is called Base Camp.

Safe in your arms

I feel

back at base camp

            from wandering ‘round

            India’s thronged streets

and the desolation of winter.

Though I recognize

none of you, we are

a band of helpers

united in our prayers

and introverted analysis.

Safe on my feet

because you stole my

wheels and

            forced me to take

            it slowly.

No knucklehead to ride

but there’s time to

discuss our fears

to smile and laugh

about better times

coming, gradually.

Alive in my dreams

I have awakened

only to find myself still

(t)here waiting for my

stubborn self to nourish

my soul

by studying in-the-service

of all people.

Leaving without us

We were in the base camp with thousands of others. We were instructed to get up early and get our trucks packed because the caravan was leaving early tomorrow. My sister/wife and I were in one bed and my parents were in the other.

My sister/wife got up and got showered and dressed while I dressed without showering and went outside to see the madness of all the trucks getting ready to leave. I met the guy who will be leaving last and locking the gates. I went back inside and my sister/wife had laid back down in bed. My parents were still asleep. I implored them all that we would be "locked in" if we didn't get up and get going soon. No one appeared to listen.

In retrospect, I don't think they would leave us behind, but it made me nervous that we weren't out there getting in the caravan to leave. What was strange is that, of all the people I know, my parents and my wife are never late for anything. I'm not sure about my sister but she had consolidated into my wife by then (as people often do in dreams). I think they realize there's no point in "being a part of the madness of the crowd" and we might as well wait a little while and get some extra sleep while all those trucks roar around and leave. We can get in line when things have settled down a little, like when you leave a drive-in movie theater a little late. In reality, they aren't going to lock you out unless you deliberately want to be. Duh.

SYMBOLS: I am not sure why my wife and my sister were a single person, since they are nothing alike each other. Perhaps they simply represent my two closest female family members close to my age. The base camp appears to be some group (humanity? the counseling profession) that comes here for awhile and then leaves to move on.

MEANING: It is quite possible that no one in your immediate family (parents, sibling & wife) is particularly interested in travelling with the group that I am excited about "hooking up" with. They would rather get a little extra sleep. You may need to travel this road without them.

Poison

Dreamt I mixed a plastic jug of plant food and drank it, accidentally. It tasted good, and I didn't realize it was plant food until 10 minutes later. Never did feel poorly, but later we figured out it was supposedly poisonous. Spent the rest of the dream trying to vomit it up (no luck). Then decided to drink lots of water in hopes of diluting the effects. Woke up on hold with the 911 operator. Still, I may start dumping out glasses of water/soda that have been sitting around for awhile.

Trip to India

Dreamed I was on a trip to India and got lost after dinner. Saw some cool caverns with natural stone seats that had been carved. Got back to the base camp and the motorcycle was missing. I didn't know anybody. Have no idea what this means. Maybe I'm ready for a vacation to a faraway place..?

Boy with a Coin

By: Iron & Wine

A boy with a coin he found in the weeds
With bullets and pages of trade magazines
Close to a car that flipped on the turn
When God left the ground to circle the world

A girl with a bird she found in the snow
Then flew up her gown and that’s how she knows
If God made her eyes for crying at birth
Then left the ground to circle the earth

A boy with a coin he crammed in his jeans
Then making a wish he tossed in the sea
Walked to a town that all of us burn
When God left the ground to circle the world
