Tim says I should update, so I guess I better, huh?

Today I went to church (the same one for the third time). It's funny to think that as I end each day, you all are beginning it. Right now it is one am here. I guess it's 3 pm for you. Not exactly beginning..

The church is Assembly of God, and they sing many of the songs we sing at our church. They have a worship team and a youth group. I've enjoyed this community of believers alot. Half are foreigners (Bideshis) and half are bangladeshis. Then I went to lunch at this place called Dhaba. At Dhaba they have the best nan, which I have come to be very fond of here. Nan is a specially made soft bread. It's served in the shape of a pancake and it can only be made in certain ovens. It' s very very yummy and you eat your meat or veggies or whatever with the nan. .

Here you are supposed to eat everything with your right hand. Unlike Africa, you don't eat from the same bowl with that hand. Instead you take some from the dish with a spoon and use your hand to eat from your own plate. It IS possible to eat rice and sauce with your hand with dignity! (Though I had to see it to believe it)

Rickshaws are fun. In Dhaka, they have mostly cycle rickshaws, but in Kolkata india, they have the rickshaws that men pull on foot. The other day There were 3 of us on a two seater rickshaw. I felt bad cuz i knew the other girls were not comfortable. So I, feeling confident, decided to stand a bit to make room. As I started to stand, the rickshaw went over a speed bump and all three of us flew out of the rickshaw and landed on our feet. Our injuries included someone's head hitting someone's teeth but that is all.

Today as I was responding to emails and talking to Mrs. Murphy, a couple of my friends were watching the new Batman thing in the living room. They were really excited until the power went out.

I'll be home on the 9th. I guess perhaps I told some people the 17th? Nope nope. Miss you all!

Yesterday, my first Sunday here (It was actually Friday, the Muslim holy day), I expected to stay at home and read all day, but I guess the Lord had a different idea. A friend came over to borrow something (Luke, one of the 14 others studying here with me), and before he left, he said he was going to meet a friend and then go to church. I was very exciting to tag along, so off Luke, Luke's friend (a  friend of Luke's sister's friend), and I go to get a train ticket for Luke's friend. Then we went to church. The service was in english, and the pews were filled with missionaries and other christians. It was so lovely- like a taste of home. We sang "All in All," one of my favorites too. After the service, a missionary couple invited us to dinner. What an encouraging evening!
I brought a hymnal and I'm so glad I did! It's fun and encouraging to sing the songs.

Will someone please let me know when you all hear from Philip, or if Christopher writes again?

A Cd here costs about a dollar, and they have a lot of western music and cds. I found one dvd for 2 dollars that had 12 movies on it, but I didn't get it because I was told the quality was bad. I am really bad at bargaining here, although most of the things I buy can be bargained down. It's just hard for me to be mad when the taxi wants 3 dollars for a really wild ride instead of $1.50. Nevertheless, I'm learning to bargain. The problem is, i think that whenever I'm all proud of bargaining down, I have only bargained down a fraction of how much I should have. Oh well. :)

Mangos are really yummy. Jackfruit, the national fruit, is MASSIVE.

Mango Bars have Changed My Life Forever

Michael and Crystal and I are sitting in Michael's room in our flat. I have just been able to connect to the internet on my computer, while Michael is still fighting. I asked them (my flat-mates) what I should write about in this post, and Michael delivered an oration about the life-changing qualities of mango bars, which I have been eating faithfully.

Dhaka, Bangladesh. Crazy, Crazy, Crazy. We live in Baridhara, the diplomatic enclave. Baridhara is the safest place in the entire country. Dhaka is a very busy place, though...there are more rickshaws here in Dhaka than any other place in the entire world. There are 80,000 registered rickshaws, but there are supposedly half a million in Dhaka. Rickshaws make about 150 taka a day, about 2 dollars. These guys pull people like us, but I also see them pull water jugs (just like the blue GPC water jugs - maybe 12), piles of bricks, and more.
The people here are poor, but are nevertheless incredible people. I have to run...we are going to the director of the program's house, but i'll update more later, and I miss you all dearly.

A very girly Post

SOOO  Today my sisters, Holly Spofford and I got all dressed up and went to Rosemary Thyme Bistro for dinner.

Sisters are fun. Holly Spofford is fun and laughs at everybody.

Several people wanted to know why we were all dressed up. We had trouble explaining. Here are some answers they got:

1. School just got out
2. Rebecca is leaving
3. Rebecca felt like wearing a dress and got her sisters to tag along
4. no reason

One lady said Holly looked like our sister. Holly does, I think, curly hair and all. I think she's somewhere between Mary and Laura, hair-wise.

I also hit the jackpot today. It was the last day at the elementary school, and because it was field day, there was a lot of candy for the kids. The teachers also got out all the snacks they had been keeping for emergencies, but the kids wanted candy more than snacks.

Some of those snacks were Fruit Snacks. I love Fruit Snacks.

At the end of field day, I sneaked onto the field where the Fruit Snacks were. Most of them were left still.
Me : Can I help carry this big container of snacks back up to the office?
Lady: Why thankyou!
Me ....*scurries off with fruitsnacks.

Peggy, the administrative assistant, gave me all the fruitsnacks (30 packets?) , a bunch of peanut butter crackers, and all the left over donuts.

I am not alone. Fruit Snacks packages litter the house.

Fruit Gushers are REALLy good too.

How stupid am I?

I have 3 days left.
I have a do list to do. Do I do it? Or do I meet with friends??

When you start a language, you should really start out strong, because if you mess up early, you will spend the entire rest of your time trying to make up for the original mess up.

On the other hand, I'm spending my whole summer on this language....:)
I think i've convinced myself to procrastinate a whole lot to the plane. I thot I'd just leave a little. But this may be alot.

Today I cleaned out my dresser and found all sorts of wonderful things from long ago. I have two sand timers, and lost of nail polish.

Thank you notes take forever. I wish i didn't have to write such presentable letters. Nevertheless, I'm getting the hang of it now I've done two...

So I'm supposed to dress very modestly in Bangladesh. Now that's not ambiguous or anything...:)

Funny quote of the day...

David: "Am I modest?"
