Animal Farm Study Questions

Chapter 1

1. Mr. Jones is portrayed as a guy who drinks a lot and is a mess.

2. Clover is a stout motherly mare approaching middle life, who had never quite got her figure back after her fourth foal.  Benjamin is the oldest animal on the farm and worst tempered.  Mollie is a foolish, pretty white mare.  The cat doesn’t like to listen and is rude.  The dogs are clever and some animals are afraid of them.  The pigs are of significance because they are in the front of the crowd and want to hear Major the most.  The raven is of significance because he does not hear the speech and is not affected by it.

3. Major called the meeting to tell the animals about his plan about rebellion and taking over the farm.  The main reason was to tell the animals about the dream he had and the significance of it.

4. The political statement that emerges from Major’s dream was that the animals should take over the farm and kick the tyrant man (Mr. Jones) out and “rebel”.

5. The evil human habits and that it needs to be stopped with rebellion.

6. The evil human habits that Major particularly warns the animals is that Man is the only creature that consumes without producing.  He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits.  Yet he is lord of all the animals.

7. Major describes the equality of animals as fate.  He says that no animal has better fate then another.

8. Magor’s dream took place in the fields of England where there was a tyrant man who the beasts took down to rule the land.

9. He describes it as that because they are fun and popular songs.

10. The clever ones, such as the pigs and the dogs had the entire song by heart within a few minutes.

11. The animals love the song and continue to sing it all night until the uproar awoke Mr. Jones.

Chapter 2

1. Three nights later, old Major died peacefully in his sleep.  His body was buried at the foot of the orchard.  Major’s speech had given to the more intelligent animals on the farm a completely new outlook on life.

2. The animals did not know when rebellion should take place but they knew that it was their duty to prepare for it.  The work of teaching and organizing the others fell naturally upon the pigs.

3. Some animals respond to the new philosophy as bad because Mr. Jones feeds them and if he were gone they’d starve to death, but most of the other animals disagree and say that rebellion is a great idea and teach others about it as well.

4. Snowball was a more cheerful pig than Napoleon, quicker in speech and more inventive.  Napoleon was a large, rather fierce looking Berkshire boar, the only Berkshire on the farm, not much of a talker, but with a reputation for getting his own way.  Squealer was a small fat pig with very round cheeks, twinkling eyes, nimble movements, and a shrill voice.  He was a brilliant talker, and when he was arguing some difficult point he had a way of skipping from side to side and whisking his tail which was someone very persuasive.

5. The animals major contribution to rebellion at this point was that they kicked Mr. Jones and him men out of the animal farm.  They also set a up a bunch of ground rules/the seven commandments.

6. Moses and his Sugarcandy Mountain tale affect the animals because they think that if they don’t have the rebellion they will go to a better place when they die anyways.

7. The rebellion comes about when Jones and his men are hurting the animals and they strike back to save their hides.

8. One of the 1st things that they do to celebrate is to get rid of everything that reminded them of Mr. Jones, eat extra rations, create the Seven Commandments, and change the farm’s name from Manor to Animal Farm.

9. Boxer discards his straw hat because one of the commandments says that animals aren’t supposed to wear any clothing.

10. The pigs say that they have learned to read and write because they think they are above the other animals and like to show off a lot.

11. The cows are milked by the pigs using some human gadget and the milk goes into the pigs’ food.

Chapter 3

1. They aren’t ordered around by humans anymore.

2. This could all come to an end and Man could take over again.

3. It is green representing the fields of England and it has a goof and a horn representing when the animals form a republic.

4. Everyone has to learn and you have to be able to read.

5. Napoleon wants to only educate the young animals.

6. The pigs will get all the milk and windfallen apples.

7. The pigs will be able to think better and watch over the other animals’ health and welfare.

Chapter 4

1. They laugh about it and don’t let their animals hear about it.

2. He surrounded and trapped the men by the cowshed and then charged at them.

3. Snowball says death in war is unavoidable while Boxer never wants to kill anyone.

4. The animals that fought bravely were given medals.

Chapter 5

1. They know what they are talking about because they read Farmer Jones’ books and they are leaders.

2. They disagree on everything that con be disagreed on

3. Napoleon urinates on the plans and takes them for himself.

4. Sunday morning meetings will come to an end

5. They try to protest but are silenced by Napoleon’s henchmen, the dogs.

6. They don’t know what to do with their vote.

5. He explains that the commandments are against everything human and the word bed means almost anything and is a general term.

6. They are just going to rebuild it again because they need it for the future.

Chapter 7

1. They continue to work but were constantly cold and hungry.

2. He reduced the animals’ rations.

3. They protested and in return Napoleon stopped the hens’ rations.

6. They uncover all of Snowball’s allies.

5. It shows that the pigs are becoming even more like man.

6. He expects the windmill to be complete.

7. They hope he gets better soon and they think even more highly of him.

8. He was at the bedside of Boxer when he died and he said that his last words were his favorite maxims.

9. He gives an oration and orders a wreath to be put on his grave.

Chapter 10

1. It is very wealthy.

2. They still work hard for little food.

3. The pigs are walking on their hind legs.

4.

5. They were frightened.

6. The animals on Animal Farm did the most work for the less food in the country.

7. The flag is plain green and they buried Old Major’s skull.

8. They see humans and pigs talking together and they couldn’t tell which was which.
